                Major area of Research

·         Conservation of indigenous breeds of livestock in their breeding tract, and identification of better climate resilient livestock breeds for the Karnataka State through gene expression studies.

 

·         Explorative studies on physiological, nutritional and environmental interactions on production and reproductive performance of farm animals.

 

·         Technology and resource mapping, skill gap analysis and capacity development of stakeholders in different livestock enterprises for sustainable animal husbandry through extension interventions.

 

 

·         Development of immunodiagnostic assays for rapid diagnosis of various infectious diseases of livestock, poultry and fish.

 

·         Research and development of new vaccines for various infectious diseases in pet and domestic animals and marker vaccine for IBR in cattle.

 

·         Cloning expression of rabies viral nucleoprotein (N) gene and evaluation of immunogenicity of expressed recombinant N protein for standardization of in-house immunodiagnostics under the ‘Make in India’ concept. 

 

·         Development of indigenous viral vector-based oral rabies vaccine for the control of rabies in the free roaming dogs and wild carnivores: a need of the hour to reach ‘zero rabies’ in dogs.

 

·         Development of point of care diagnostics in cancer/ neoplasm and evaluation of surgical and/or chemotherapy in pet, ruminants and wild animals.

 

·         Functional and value –added dairy products, high end characterization of milk and milk products, and nanotechnology in dairy processing.

 

·         Exploration of potential exotics in aquaculture, and development of low cost sustainable aquaculture and studies on climate change resilience aquaculture production system.

 

·         Studies on utilization of bioactive compounds from seafood processing waste and characterization for potential application.

 

·         Remote sensing, application of advanced fishing methods for conservation of fishery resources.

 

·         Integration of supply -chain management with information technology in sea- food sector.

Highlights of Extension Education Activities (Including Number of KVKs) Training programmes/ Certificate courses, etc.

The Extension Directorate of the university is carrying out extension activities through Livestock Research and Information Centers (LRICs) spread across the State. Extension services through these centres are regularly being undertaken through need-based trainings, demonstrations, workshops, extension publications. The dissemination of scientific informations are broadcasted  regularly   in regional language for the benefit of farming community. In addition, to encourage entrepreneurship among unemployed youths and progressive farmers need based trainings are provided through Extension Education Units (EEU) of the constituent colleges of university.

The Krishi Vignana Kenda (KVK) located in the costal region of the State is functioning as per the mandate of the ICAR. Various extension programmes in the area of animal husbandry, fishery and agriculture, horticulture and allied field(s) are being undertaken and actively engaged in addressing the regional issues of farmers.

  Some of the prioritised extension progammes of the university are:

·         Capacity building of farmers through training programmes on profitable dairy farming, sheep and goat rareing, commercial –and backyard poultry production & management.

 

·         Assistance to Scheduled cast (SC) and Scheduled tribe (ST) farmers by providing necessary-inputs under SC-SP/ TSP training programmes.

 

·         Continued education programmes for officials / technical staff of the State Departments of Animal Husbandry and Department of Fisheries.

 

·         Collaborative training programmes with CPDO&TI, KMF and NGOs.      

 

·         Orientation and training to ‘Sagar Mithras’ on various fishery activities in the coastal region with special importance on marine fish catch.

 

·         Hands-on training in ‘value addition to dairy/ meat/ fish products and providing assistance in market survey / market networking.

 

 

·         e. bulletins and development of mobile Apps. in the area of dairy production, fodder cultivation, and aquaculture for the benefit of farmers and youths.      

 

Strength of the University 

·         As the jurisdiction of the university is State level, the student communities, mostly from rural regions are benefitted to receive quality education in Veterinary/ Dairy and Fisheries Sciences.

·         The university can reach to farming community in different parts of the State quickly through its LRICs to address/ tackle the problems associated with animal husbandry and dairy production. 

·         A vast area of farmland under university at various locations of the State is benefitting the researchers to undertake research studies/ farm trials having agro-climatic relevance.

·         The university is blessed with both inland- and costal (Arabian sea) facilities to undertake advanced research and innovations in aquaculture and mariculture.

·         Institution of Animal Health and Biologicals, an institution under university is providing quality vaccines to various bacterial diseases of livestock and poultry.

·         Developed hybrid chicken –‘SWARNADHARA’ for backyard farming.

·         KVAFSU-CVA Rabies Diagnostic Laboratory:  WOAH Reference Laboratory for Rabies for South Asia and South East Asian countries.

·         Established Incubation Center for value addition to foods of animal origin.

·         Breeding and seed production facility for Karnataka State Fish (Barbodes carnaticus).

·         Production of tissue culture anti-rabies vaccine for animal use - under the Government sector.

·         Production of improved varies of ‘Amur’ common carp.
