Vision :
Provisioning of quality human resource to facilitate technology led agricultural renaissance revitalizing and rejuvenating post green revolution agriculture ensuring both production and environment sustainability targeting a minimum of 4%+ agricultural growth while addressing the issues of household nutritional security, farmers distress, commerce in agriculture as well as regional, national and global food crisis taking the advantage of innovative technology, market reforms and liberalization.

Mission:
To produce farm/ farmer, science and society ready quality human resources in agriculture and allied fields for appropriate man power backstopping to the sector while evolving continuously state of the art research/ technological outputs to fit into the local and regional agricultural production systems for production and profit sustainability ensuring at the same time that the fruits of the tested research results are taken to different stakeholders – farmers being the primary stake holder - using appropriate extension delivery mode and methods.

The University is continuously catering to the needs of the extension functionaries and farming community of Assam and North East states by providing Farm Advisory Services (89760) , Consulting Services (1968), AIP Mobile Solution of 2073 farmers’ problem, Soil Health Cards(69757) to farmers, Animal care including treatment and vaccination (223321) and organizing Trainings(10,127), Demonstrations(469), FLDs, (2187), OFTs (1629), Kishan Mela (90), Field Day(672), Farmer- Scientist- Interaction,(330) , Awareness Programme (343), TV/Radio Programmes (450), Exhibition (232), Village Adoption (458), Phone in Programme (5057), Self Help Group formation (53), Exposure Visit (183),Tribal Subplan Programme (25) under 5 districts, Custom Hiring Centers (8) besides, taking up of villages (761) under “ Swacch Bharat Abhiyan,” Seed Production on Rice , Pulse and Oil Seeds and publication of around 226 extension literatures, etc. through its Directorate of Extension Education, Extension Education Institute and widely scattered KVKs (23), Regional & Commodity Research Station (11) and Constituent Colleges (9) in the field of agriculture, horticulture, sericulture, veterinary, community science, fishery during the last 5 years. eighteen (18) Certificate courses were launched and offered by the University which include Pig production, Master Goat Production, Apparel Designing and Construction, Production of Bio-fertilizer, Poultry Production Technology, Plant Tissue Culture & Management, Aquaculture Production, Tea Production Technology & Management, Cut Flower Production, and Flower Design, Bakery, Apiculture, Management of Day Care Centre, Nursery Management of Horticultural crops, Dyeing & Printing of Textiles, Dairy Farming & Fodder Production, Designing & Value addition of Marketable Products for Home Furnishing, Food Preservation and Floral Design.

Strength of the University (Including 5 important achievements):

  • The University with 9 constituent colleges (in the fields of agriculture, Horticulture, Sericulture, Veterinary & Animal husbandry, Fishery and Community Science) having 62 UG Departments and 63 PG Departments ; 11 Regional & Commodity Research Stations in Plant and Animal Sciences and 23 Krishi Vigyan Kendras spreading across the State with state of the art facilities like administrative buildings (Office, Guest House, Hostels for students (boy’s and girl’s) including that for international students), Academic buildings including laboratory, class room and libraries with ICT facility, sports facilities like indoor and outdoor stadium, gymnasium, swimming pool etc., scientifically laid out experimental fields, experimental tea and other plantation crops, Horticultural farms with high tech nursery facilities, Animal and fish farms in the College campuses, Regional Research Stations and KVKs posses a commendable resource endowments comparable to that of a developed University of the country .
  • About 800 highly qualified faculties (teacher and scientists including those in the KVK system) man the University majority of whom got their highest degree (Ph.D) from outside the state including abroad.
  • The University is undergoing national and International Collaboration in Academics and Research and has 413 externally funded projects including 60 AICRPs, 15 Network, 338 ICAR ad-hoc and competitive grant projects besides 8 internationally funded projects.
  • Accolades and recognition earned by the university in the last few years in the form of awards, certificates and individual recognition through generation of qualitative human resource, basketful of varieties/breeds/ technologies, quality seeds and planting materials as per need of the stakeholders brought confidence and faith of the stakeholders including farmers and governments about the role and contribution of the University is the biggest strength to outperform its recoded performances and bring in novelty and innovations in agricultural approaches in future.

Niche Area of Excellence (Area in which University is strong):
The University has completed a Niche Area of Excellence on Biofertilizer Production. Five proposals on Niche Area of Excellence were submitted to the ICAR which are under its active consideration.

Status of Autonomy : The University is an Autonomous Body as per the University Act.1969

Funding support received (From state and other agencies): The Government of Assam and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) are the main sources of fund for carrying out academic (education, research and extension) and other developmental activities of the University. Besides, funds are also received from the agencies like Dept. of Science and Technology (DST), Dept. of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (GOI), Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Dept. of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, GOI and other national and international collaborators like Mcknight Foundation, USA Indo-Swiss Collaboration in Biotechnology (ISCB), The Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, NTRF, ICMR, DFID, Oil India Ltd., Duliajan etc.
