The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and animal sciences University was established on 20 September 1989.

The university has three colleges, six research stations, one Avian Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory, one Animal Feed Analytical and Quality Control Laboratory, one Animal Health Surveillance Unit, one Institute of Food and Dairy Technology, one Institute of Animal Nutrition, Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, one Duck Research and Development Centre, two Krishi Vigyan Kendras, five Fisheries Research Centres and three Farmers’ Training Centres.

The major achievements of the university are the development of leechi disease vaccine; and infectious bursal disease vaccine for poultry; trivalent leptospira vaccine for cattle; diagnostic kit for screening blue-tongue disease affecting small ruminants and its vaccine; Peste-des-Petitis Ruminants (PPR) vaccine and bit for small ruminants; agroforestry models integrating livestock in the farmers’ fields; adaptability and management of ostrich; selective breeding and cross breeding of local goats through open nucleus breeding and introduction of Boer germplasm of African origin respectively to improve their weight gain and meat yield; popularization of other species of poultry like Japanese quails and turkeys.
