Established in 1962, the Punjab Agricultural University is located at Ludhiana, modelled on the pattern of Land Grant colleges in the USA.

The PAU has played a key role in increasing foodgrain production in the state several-folds during the last 3 decades and for ushering in an era of Green Revolution in India. It has also made notable contributions in increasing livestock and poultry production. In recognition of its outstanding achievements on agricultural research, education and extension, it was adjudged the Best Agricultural University in India in 1995.

The university has five constituent colleges at Ludhiana, viz. College of Agriculture, College of Agricultural Engineering, College of Veterinary Science, College of Home Science and College of Basic Sciences and Humanities. At present it has 50 departments, offering 51 Masters’ and 42 Ph. D. programmes.
