International Conference

On International Conference on ‘Agriculture and Industrial Development in Non-traditional Energy Field’ was inaugurated at the hands of Dr N.C.Patel, Vice-Chancellor, Anand Agriculture University, Anand, Gujarat and was organized by National Agriculture Higher Education Project of Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapith at Akola.
Dr. V. M. Bhale, VC, PDKV, Akola presided over the function. Dr. S. R. Kalbande, President Organizing Committee, delivered the introductory remarks and elaborated the topic of the conference. He said that various programmes for employees and capacity-bulding for students have been taken up and the awareness about industrial development in non-traditional energy fields being spread. Prof. Indramani, President, Indian Society of Agri-Engineering, New Delhi, was the Chief Guest.
Dr N C Patel, elaborated on many opportunities in the agriculture field including bio fertilizers, bio-pesticides, agriculture tools, bio-fuel from Algae, bee keeping, and horticulture etc.He pointed out that the objective of India is to generate 2.5 kilowatt energy per hectare from its present generation 1.6 kilowatt only.
Prof. Dhiraj Karade and all the employees of National Agriculture Higher Education Project made efforts to make the programme success.

MoUs were signed with CSIR-CMCRI, Bhavnagar, NABARD, Ahmedabad and JAU, Junagadh for bilateral research collaboration, technology exchange and farmer services etc mutually benefiting activities. The event was held on 20 Jan, 2019 in the presence of Central Union Minister of The state Government of India - Agriculture, Farmers welfare & Panchayati Raj Shri Parshottam Rupala and Minister of Agriculture, Agriculture Co-operation and Farmer Welfare Department of Govt. of Gujarat, Shri R. C. Faldu and other dignities.
 

Quality Seed Grower Training

 
Skill Development Training Programme at AAU, Anand
A 25 day training programme on ‘Quality seed grower’ was organized at Agricultural Research Station, Sansoli, under the project ‘Skill development training programme, 2018-19’, sponsored by Agriculture Skill Council of India from 07 Feb to 03 March 2019. Total 20 farmers from different villages of Kheda district enthusiastically participated in the programme. During the training, lectures on crop production practices of various crops, seed-certification standards, as well as, post-harvest processing, precision farming, plant protection, marketing etc were given. Practicals on development of new varieties or hybrids were also performed by the trainees. In addition the, trainees were also oriented regarding crop-production technologies by the visiting professionals from various research as well as extension education institutes and private companies for upgrading their knowledge and practical exposure.

 

Awareness on Gender Issues and Role of Young Generation

The Basic Engineering and Applied Sciences, C.A.E.T., AAU, Godhra and Gender Resource Centre- State Resource Centre for Women, Ahmedabad jointly organized a workshop on ‘Awareness on Gender Issues and The Role of Young Generation’ on 16 Feb, 2019 at College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Godhra. In the inaugural session were Dr R Subbaiah, Principal and Dean, CAET, Godhra. Mr Amitbhai Dave, Consultant, GRC and Miss Himali Joshi, Training Specialist from GRC, Ahmedabad. Er. Kapil Mandloi, Assistant Professor& Head, BEAS, Prof Shefali K. Modi, Nodal Teachers of Gender Champion.
Dr. Subbaiah, Principal & Dean in his speech enlightened the importance of gender equality and also focused on the important role of female in every field in current scenario. Miss Himali Joshi introduced about the organization GRC and its important role to generate gender champions by educating the students as well as society about the policies, rules and regulations laid down by Govt. of India and Govt. of Gujarat.
The programme comprised as four sessions, highlighting the issues like technical inputs for Gender Planning, Gender Budgeting, Gender Analysis, Gender Convergence, and Gender Advocacy. The afternoon session was conducted by Mr. Shaileshbhai & Miss Bhavnaben from Gujarat State Child Protection Society. They focused on child protection act also informed about child line 1098.

Krushi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), AAU, Ahmedabad had organized Krushi Mela with collaboration with Agricultural Technology Management Agency Ahmedabad during 2-3 March 2019. About 3000 farmers had participated and visited Krushi Pradarshani. Shri Devusinh Chauhan, Sansad Member, inaugurated the function.
 

All India Veterinary Professionals

The students of College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, AAU, Anand participated in All India Veterinary College Table Tennis and Badminton tournaments and professional quiz competition organized by G. B. Pant University, Pantnagar during 14 to 16 Mar 2019. Sixteen Veterinary Colleges of the country participated in this event, and Total 290 students participated in it. The students of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Anand secured second position in the Quiz.
 
 

Vision 2030 for Dairy Industry and 13thALUMNI Convention

Views from National Seminar
A national seminar on ‘Vision 2030 for Dairy Industry’ and 13th Alumni Convention were organized jointly by SMC College of Dairy Science and Alumni Association during 4-5 Jan, 2019 at SMC College of Dairy Science, AAU, Anand. Inaugurating the function by Dr. J. B. Prajapati, Principal and Dean, SMC College of Dairy Science, welcomed the dignitaries and the delegates from India and abroad. He briefed about the importance of Anand for dairy development and explained about the contribution of SMC College Dairy Science in dairy education and research in the country.
Dr. K. B. Kathiria, Director of Research opined that though several technologies are being regularly developed in the Institutes, it is very important that these percolate down to the consumer.
Prof. Hitesh Bhatt, Director, IRMA, Anand, pinpointed the major transformative roles the dairy industry would be playing by 2030, namely increasing the productivity of the milch animal as well as ensuring the value of dairy commodity for the consumers.
Dr. R.R.B Singh, Director, ICAR, NDRI, Karnal, graced the inaugural function as Guest of Honour. He pointed out that since the last decade the bovine and buffalo population has increased by 0.8% and 1.8% respectively. He stressed the need to address the issues related to non-productivity, semen sexing and reproductivity of milch animals.
Dr. R. S. Sodhi, Managing Director, GCMMF, Anand, began his address by claiming that dairy industry can play a major destressing role for farmers, by providing them an alternative yet lucrative source of income. He stressed on change in diet habit of people, with more inclusion of protein and fat rich food, where dairy products offer a good option.
Dr. N. C. Patel, VC, presided over the function. He emphasized the need to modernize the Indian dairy industry by using latest techniques like artificial intelligence. He suggested that the unorganized dairy sector needs to be tapped by professionals by providing them technical, educational and marketing support.
The 13thAlumni convention of SMC College of Dairy Science was organized on Saturday, 5 Jan, 2019 at Anand, There was august gathering of graduates and post-graduates of the 1993 and 1994. This event is religiously organized every alternate year by SMC College and its alumni association to honour its Silver jubilee batch of alumni, for their valuable contributions to their profession and to the society.
During this event, Dr J. R. Patel Memorial Awards for Education and Research as well as Dairy Professionals were given. Best Student awards for 2017 and 2018 were also presented. On this occasion 33 graduates and post-graduates of 1993 and 1994 batches were felicitated for their contributions to the dairy industry and the society.

The AAU, Anand on 19 Jan 2019. They had an interaction meeting with the Dr. N. C. Patel, the university officers and all the Deans of respective colleges.
The ‘Strategic Partnership Agreement’ was exchanged between Mr. K. A. Markelov, Acting Rector, Astrakhan State University, Astrakhan,(USSR) Russia and Dr. N. C. Patel, VC, India in presence of all the worthy members from both the universities. Then they visited Sardar Patel Educational Museum, Bio-fertilizer Research Laboratory, Tissue- Culture Laboratory, Pesticide Residue Laboratory, College of FPT & BE and Vidya Dairy. The Russian delegation appreciated the facilities and academic activities and showed keen interest to work in collaborative educational and research activities.

He visited Sardar Patel Educational Museum, Bio-fertilizer Research Project, Tissue Culture Laboratory, College of FPT & BE, IABMI, College of Agricultural Information Technology, Pesticide Residue Laboratory and Vidya Dairy. He also had an interaction session with students of International Agribusiness Management Institute.
 

25th Meeting of ICAR Regional Committee-VI

 
 
Brief look of XXV Meeting
 
The 25th meeting of ICAR Regional Committee-VI was held during 4-5 Feb 2019 at AAU, Anand. Shri Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister of State, Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Panchayati Raj, Government of India; Shri Jaydrathsinh Parmar, State Minister of Agriculture and Panchayat, Environment (Independent Charge), Government of Gujarat; Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR); Shri Sushil Kumar, Additional Secretary (DARE) & Secretary (ICAR); Shri B. Pradhan, Additional Secretary & Financial Advisor (DARE/ICAR), New Delhi; Shri Sanjay Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Gujarat and other officials of the ICAR, New Delhi were present in the inaugural function of the meeting. This was followed by the business session of the meeting, in which presentation of action taken report on the recommendations of the previous meeting was made followed by discussion on state-wise fresh agenda items, problems and research needs and developmental issues as well as the responses of various centres of the ICAR in this region. The meeting ended with concluding remarks of Trilochan Mohpatra D G, ICAR, and New Delhi.

The Golden Jubilee year Celebrations of (CCSHAU) started with the International Symposium on February 2nd, 2019.Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Haryana, Mr. O.P. Dhankar inaugurated the Symposium on “Innopreneurship: The need for sustainable agriculture”. Accompanied by the Prof. K.P. Singh, VC, he also laid foundation stone of Golden Jubilee Women’s Hostel.

Total 20 students of the (CCSHAU) under World Bank funded project will get 2 months training for skill and entrepreneurship development in Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague, which is renowned for agricultural education and research.
 

GOVIND BALLABH PANT UNIVERSITY OF AGRI-CULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY, PANTNAGAR

Counseling Workshop on Sexual Harassment

A counselling workshop on ‘Sexual harassment of women at work place (prevention, prohibition and redressal) was organized by Directorate of Placement and Counseling on 16 Feb 2019, M/s Benevo Management Pvt. Ltd, was invited for deliberations in the workshop The topics covered in the workshop included gender sensitization and awareness about various laws for women empowerment, background of sexual harassment of women at work place, formation of internal complaint committee and the case studies and preventive policies. Total 87 participants from the university, consisting of teachers and students participated in the workshop. The girl students from Government Girls Inter College, Campus School and Bal Nilayam School also participate. The workshop was organized for 50 participants, but there was overwhelming response, leading participants were present in the workshop.

Training of scientists

The Centre of Advanced Faculty Training in Department of Agronomy, College of Agriculture conducted a training on ‘Tactical farming for climate resilience’ from 8 to 28 Jan 2019. During this training 40 lectures of experts, 8 practical classes and 2 visits were arranged. In this 39th training of 19 candidates from 10 states of India participated. So far about 900 scientists have been trained in such trainings, sponsored by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.
The CAFT conducted training on ‘Modern concepts in plant disease management for enhancing quality and productivity’ from 8 to 28 Feb 2019. During this training 40 lectures of experts, 8 practical classes and 2 visits were arranged. These were 22 candidates from 10 states of India. So far 794 scientists have been trained in the trainings.

New Patent granted

A new patent was granted to Department of Biotechnology of Pantvarsity for the invention ‘A method of preparing antibacterial nanocomposites’. This invention was possible with the efforts of Departments of Chemistry and Microbiology. The patent was granted by the patent office of Government of India for 20 years from 23 March 2012, in accordance with the provisions of Patents Act, 1970.

The university’s 105th farmers’ fair-cum-agro-industrial exhibition was organized to disseminate latest technologies, information and various inputs, including seeds of kharif crops, to farmers and for interaction of farmers with the scientists, industrialists etc. Padma Shri Bharat Bhushan Tyagi a progressive farmer inaugurated it on 7th -17th Mar 2019 at the main campus of Pantnagar University by cutting the ribbon. On this occasion, Dr. Tej Partap, VC, Local MLA, Shri Rajesh Shukla; Additional Commissioner, Dr. Y.R. Meena, Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Dr. Y.P.S. Dabas, Director Extension Education, , and other dignitaries were present. After inaugurating the fair, Shri Tyagi, Dr. Meena and progressive farmer, Padama Shri Kanwal Singh Chauhan Dr. Tej Partap, VC, took for a round of fair-ground by and were show the stalls of the university and of other private and public sector organizations. The main inaugural ceremony of the fair was organized at Gandhi Hall auditorium of the university, where Dr Tej Partap, Shri Tyagi, Shri Chauhan and Shri Shukla also addressed the farmers.

4 days fair concluded on10 March 2019. The closing and prize distribution ceremony was organized in Gandhi Hall. Dr. Tej Pratap, VC, and local MLA, Shri Rajesh Shukla, presented prizes to the winners of different competitions held during the fair and different categories of stalls put up in the fair. The stall of M/s Jai Gurudev Industries, Rudrapur, was awarded the Overall Best Stall in this concluding ceremony.

Diploma Progamme for Input Dealers

A diploma programme in Agricultural Extension Services for input dealers of Udham Singh Nagar district was inaugurated on 5 Feb 2019 at the State Agriculture Management and Extension Training Institute, Uttarakhand, at the Directorate of Extension of the University. The SAMETI, Uttarakhand, was made as the Nodal Training Institute for this purpose. The programme was funded by Government of India and the input dealer jointly (50:50), and was managed centrally by GoI through MANAGE, Hyderabad. The other centre is at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kashipur. Total 40 input dealers have registered for the programme, who will be trained once a week, on every Wednesday, for one year. This will enable them to diagnose the disease and insect pests attacking the farmers’ fields and to advise the farmers about the chemicals to be used by them for their control. The use of other inputs in the farmers’ fields will also be advised by them. Experts of the university have been desiganted by MANAGE for teaching the course.
 

Bee-keeping Seminar and bee-hive Distribution

The Honey-bee Research and Training Centre of Pantvarsity organized a ‘Bee-keepers’ seminar and bee-hive distribution’ programme on 20 Feb 2019. The programme was organized in collaboration with Chaitanya Maunalya and Krishi Seva Samiti under Sweet Revolution Scheme of Government of India. The programme was sponsored by Khadi and Village Industries Commission of Government of India. Dr. Tej Partap, VC, was the chief guest of the programme, who also distributed 600 bee colonies with bee-hives to the farmers, in the presence of State Director of the Commission. Bee-keeping scientists and experienced bee-keepers shared technical know-how about bee-keeping for maximizing employment in this area.
A honey processing plant was constructed at Honey-bee Research and Training Centre. The plant was inaugurated on 28 Feb 2019 by the Registrar, Dr A.P. Sharma. The cost of the plant is 12 lakhs rupees and its capacity is 10 quintals per day. This plant will further strengthen the beekeeping programme of the university, and in future will also facilitate the farmers through incubation centre.

An educational tour of 50 farmers of Kalinagar village of Gadarpur Block of Udham Singh Nagar district was organized on 14 Jan 2019 under ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’ project of Government of India. These farmers, including 40 women farmers, were shown Instructional Poultry Farm, Goat Unit and Mushroom Research and Training Centre of the university and were told about the production technologies in detail to enable them to start one of these farm-based occupations to add to their income.
A training programme under the aegis of dairy farmer-entrepreneur was organized from 26 Dec 2018 to 19 January 2019, in which 20 farmers were trained on various aspects of dairy farming.
 

JUNAGADH AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, JUNAGADH (GUJARAT)

Technology and Machinery Demonstration Mela

College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, JAU, organized a ‘Technology and Machinery Demonstration Mela-2019’ on 21 Feb, 2019 in collaboration with all AICRPs running under the CAET and ATMA Project of Government of Gujarat. Dr A.R. Pathak, VC, and President of the function, elaborated the importance of soil, water, value addition and marketing for betterment of farming community. About 30 stalls of machinery and technology were exhibited in the exhibition. Around 800 farmers, 100 students and 150 scientists / staff participated in the mela.

A training programme on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Drone design and development was organized by Experts Hub, Industry Skill Development Centre at the JSS Academy of Technical Education, Bengaluru (Karnataka) during 17-23 January, 2019. Two students viz. Shri Dharmesh Shingala and Shri Parth B. Trangadia of B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture, College of Agriculture, JAU, bagged the Runners-up title in the Technical Project Competition on UAV and Drone Design and Development.
 

Training Programsunder Institutional Development Plan

 
Training programme were organized for UG students of university under World Bank funded and ICAR supported Institutional Development Plan. Six such programmes on robotics technology, artificial intelligence, programming language required for robotics and automation in agriculture was organized from January to March 2019.

The 19th ICAR-All India Inter Agricultural Youth Festival-2018-19 was organized at Sardar KrushiNagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardar Krushi Nagar (Gujarat) during 3-7 Feb, 2019. Total 25 students participated in Folk Dance, One Act Play, Mime and Fine Arts from different colleges of Junagadh Agricultural University.

The KU organized first national conference on “Adulteration in Dairy and Food Products: Accomplishments and Road Ahead” at College of Dairy Science, Amreli on 19 Mar, 2019, It was funded by NAHEP, ICAR, New Delhi. Dr. N. H. Kelawala, VC, inaugurated the Conference. There was Lectures on Detection of adulteration in dairy & food products; Recent Advances in the detection of adulteration in Dairy and Food products; Dairy and food microbial safety and hygiene and Dairy and food laws and regulations were delivered by Dr. Vivek Sharma, Principal Scientist, NDRI, Karnal; Mr Aditya Jain, Manager, NDDB, Anand, and Dr K.D. Aparnathi, Former Professor & Head, SMC College of Dairy Science, AAU, Anand.

The KU organized hands-on-training on “Fabrication of aquaculture and its management” at Ukai (Tapi), Post-graduate Institute of Fisheries Education and Research. There were 60 participants out of which 28 were women entrepreneurs. It was inaugurated by Dr N. H. Kelawala, VC. Dr Smit Lende, Assistant Professor, PGIFER, KU, was Training co-ordinator.

Under the Assistance to State for Control of Animal Diseases, the Veterinary Officers Trainingon “Bovine reproductive ultrasonography”, was organized by the KU, It has sponsored by Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of Gujarat, during 18 to 23 Feb, 2019 and 25 Feb to 2 Mar, 2019. Twenty Veterinarians participated in the training. Dr N.H.Kelawala, VC, inaugurated the meeting.

Joint Research Project

Kamdhenu University and Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre, DST, Government of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, (Gujarat) was jointly awarded a research project on “Ameliorating antimicrobial frug resistances and augmenting of fertility through probiotic microbiome intervention in postpartum bovines”. The project assistance was of Rs. 28,48,274/ under “Research Support Scheme”. Dr. Vishal Suthar, KU, is Principal Investigator of the Project. The broad objectives of the project are: (i) Identification of probiotic consortia for ameliorating antimicrobial drug resistance and augmentation of fertility in bovines and (ii) To evaluate the potential of lactic acid-producing or species-specific microbes or probiotic to overcome uterine infection in bovines.

Snake-head fish from Kerala

Snake-head fish
Probably one of the most amazing recent discoveries from the fish world, a research team consisting of Dr Rajeev Raghavan, Assistant Professor at Department of Fisheries Resource Management, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies and V.K. Anoop, Ph.D student under Dr Rajeev Raghavan along with British scientists have found a mysterious new species of ‘snake-head fish’ lurking in the subterranean waters of Kerala. The scientific paper reporting this unusual finding was published in the leading international animal taxonomy journal Zootaxa. The bizarre fish has been scientifically named Aenigma channagollum Gollum. The new fish is not only a new species, but also a remarkable new genus of the snake-head family Channidae (which is currently represented by 2 other genera, Channa in Asia, and Parachanna in Africa). Aenigma channagollum also represents the first species of snake-head to be recorded from subterranean waters. The Gollum Snakehead was discovered by pure chance in a rice-field not long after the catastrophic floods in Kerala in August 2018, and certainly not collected from its natural habitat.When local youngster and fish hobbyist, Ajeer, stumbled upon this interesting fish from his rice field near Vengara in Malappuram District of Kerala, little did he realized that the fish will become one of the most unusual species to be described from India in recent times.
Though Kerala is one of the best -explored regions in India with regard to fresh-water bio-diversity, research on subterranean animals is still at its infancy, as several weird genera and species of fish and shrimps have been discovered from this state in the recent past, throwing more questions than answers on their evolution and bio-geographic relationships. On-going research at the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, in collaboration with Natural History Museum in London, and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, is hopeful of solving some of these mysteries.

Dr A Ramachandran, VC, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies an eminent fisheries scientist has been selected for the prestigious Dr N Balakrishnan Nair International Environmental Excellence Award. The Award has been presented to Dr A. Ramachandran by Dr.AyanoBeraso Hula, President of the University of Hawassa, at International Conference on Aquatic Resources and Aquaculture for Sustainable Development, held at the Hawassa city in (Ethiopia) during 10-12 Jan, 2019. The award is in recognition of the comprehensive contributions made by Dr A. Ramachandran in Fisheries and Ocean Studies education sector during the past 34 years of his academic life.The award, instituted by Bangaluru-based Society for Biological Sciences, in memory of the renowned biologist and environmental scientist Dr N. Balakrishnan Nair, to recognize scientists and academicians with vital contributions in the areas of bio-diversity conservation, sustainable development and nature education.

Record Fish Count of 82 species

Fish count on world wet land day
The Kole Fish Count- 2019, conducted by with the help of Kerala Agricultural University on Feb 1 and 2 in connection with World Wetland Day across Kole Wetlands of Central Kerala, recorded 82 aquatic species. These include 71 fish species (18 species of brackish-water fish and 53 species of freshwater fish), 5 shrimp species, 4 crab and 2 mollusc species. The participatory assessment, in which scientists, students and environment activists took part, covered the entire expanse of Kole habitats distributed across Thrissur and Malappuram districts. Among the major Kole regions, Ponnani had a higher diversity. The survey revealed that Maranchery in Ponnani Kole had the highest diversity (45 species), followed by Uppungal (also in Ponnani Kole) and Enamavu (Thrissur Kole) with 34 species each. With just 18 species, Adat (Thrissur Kole) recorded the lowest diversity.
Some of the most common species encountered during the survey include Orange Chromide, the Dwarf Pufferfish, Malabar Leaf Fish, and Pearl Spot . However, the survey team also came across 6 non-native fish species, raising concerns on the sustainability of the fishery and aquaculture practices being followed in Kole and its vicinity. The presence of 6 species of non-native fish in the Kole, particularly alarming presence of the Amazonian sucker catfish across the Kole ecosystem, is of significant concern as these exotic species have the potential to compete with, and outnumber the native species from the habitat. A detailed survey report has been prepared and submitted to State Fisheries Ministry, Government of Kerala, for further follow up action.

A Research and Extension specialists’ Workshop for Fruits, Mushroom, Agro- Forestry, Post-Harvest Management, Farm Power and Machinery, Food Technology and Agricultural Economics was organized by Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, during 26-27 Feb 2019. Experts deliberated on horticultural practices for guava, citrus, mango, ber, peach, litch etc, on use of paddy straw for cultivation of specialty mushrooms in Punjab., lactic acid fermentation of fruits and vegetables, post- harvest handling of fruits, besides discussions on honey heating and filtration system, modified atmosphere storage of cucumber etc.

  • The Kisan Mela was conducted at the Punjab Agriculture University during 15-16 Mar, 2019.

    Which involved enthusiastic participation of farmers and farm women from Punjab and adjoining states. The campus was abuzz with hectic activities concerning field demonstrations, farmers-scientists interactions, technical session, sale of quality seeds and farm literature, and cultural programme. The theme of the mela was “Process agricultural produce to make farming more profitable.” Farmers made a beeline to purchase quality and improved seeds, produced by the PAU.

    PMH 11 (kharif season maize hybrid): Its average yield is 55 q/ha. It has long ears with orange flint grains, having of â-carotene in grains 4.43/ppm, compared with 3.87/ppm of PMH 1.

    SML 1827 (summer mungbean): It is resistant to yellow-mosaic disease (YMD). Its average seed yield is 11.63 q/ ha. It possesses medium-sized shiny grains, there are no kokroos (hard grains). The YMD resistance will make kharif season seed possible for production.

  • PBN 342 Napier bajra hubird
    Napier bajra hybrid PBN 342: Its average green yield is 2,167 q/ha. It is resistant to leaf blight and possesses non-hairy leaves, with better succulence.

  • Punjab Karela 15 Bitter Gourd
    Punjab Karela 15 (Bitter gourd): Its fruits are dark green and with matt appearance. It is moderately resistant to yellow mosaic disease of bittergourd. The average yield is 127.5 q/ha.

    Punjab Apple Guava (Guava): Its fruits are round, having dark red- coloured peel, with creamy flesh. Fruits have 11.83 % TSS and 0.45 % acidity. The average fruit yield of 4 years old plant is 58 kg. Its colour development is better in winter season.

Nagdeve, Dean (Agriculture Engineer.) were present.
Dr V.M. Bhale said that farmers have been facing the problem in water lifting due to the problem of electricity supply. There is lack of energy on the farmer’s fields and now this is the time to move on solar, wind, biomass energy etc. This is the time to harvest this energy, and its proper utilization for farm and domestic use is the need of the country, he added. Now the time comes to focus on the generation of energy from naturally available sources. He expressed his views that the entire university campus will be on the solar-based energy in future. He mentioned that there is lot of scope for the energy generation by using the biomass. He added that the new green revolution will be coming from the agricultural engineering field. He suggested that the students should think about their own business in the agricultural sector and focus on the business as a career, because of huge scope for entrepreneurship in Agriculture sector.
Er. Satish Khadse, chief guest of the programme expressed that the renewable energy sector has lots of job opportunities in the country in the upcoming decade. In this international training, 32 of scientists participated from all over India.

Kalbande, Principal Investigator, National Agricultural Higher Education Project, informed about the review of the conference and submission of over 225 research papers and 75 abstracts elaborating on various issues in the conference. Total 322 participants were registered for this conference.

Soil Fertility Maps to Aid in Judicious Use of Fertilizers

The PJTSAU marched ahead in its endeavour to make agriculture profitable in the state by developing soil-fertility maps and reports for various districts in Telangana state.

Seventeen district maps prepared by the Soil Scientists of AICRP on Micronutrients and AICRP on STCR, with the co-operation of other soil scientists of the university were released by Sri S.K. Joshi, Chief Secretary, Government of Telangana on 29 Mar, 2019 at State Secretariat. On this occasion Dr V. Praveen Rao, VC; Dr R. Jagadeeshwar, Director of Research, Dr P. Surendra Babu, Principal Scientist and other scientific faculty member involved in the preparation of the reports were present.

The report was prepared after analysing around 7,000 soil samples collected from different parts of the state. The maps will help in figuring the kinds of soil and their status, and also guide the State Government in factoring and distributing the quantum of fertilizers to the farmers.
 

 
The detailed report on district-wise food consumption pattern in Telangana State was also released on the occasion. The report was prepared by School of Agribusiness Management, in collaboration with National Academy of Agricultural Research Management by surveying 6,200 households across all 33 districts of Telangana State, covering survey system based on both rural as well as urban households. The district-wise data collection was accomplished by using GPS enabled tablet.

It meant to have vision for overall growth and development of agri-sector by promoting innovations, developing infrastructure facilities and logistics, creating robust agri-value chain and enumerating policy recommendations for state and central government. Dr. M. Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President Government of India in his inaugural address emphasized the need to empower the agri sector as it provides livelihood to more than 50% of the work force in our country.

He urged the scientific community to come up with solutions for multi-dimensional problems faced by the agri-sector, and further emphasized the need for the Government, scientists, Extension personnel and farmers to work together to reach the goal of doubling farmers income by 2022. Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Director General, ICAR chaired a session on “Post-harvest management and value addition of foods: role of farmer producer’s organisations in improving market access”. In his address he focused on issues that reduce the post harvest losses in perishable foods and grains and the government policies for promoting value addition of food crops. Dr. V. Praveen Rao, VC, chaired a session “Technology in Agri Enterpreneurship: success stories and experiences”, from the progressive farmers, in which progressive farmers shared their experiences and success.

The third convocation of PJTSAU was held on 9 Mar, 2019 at, Rajendranagar. Dr. S. Ayyappan, Chancellor of Central Agricultural University, Imphal & former Director-General, ICAR, New Delhi, was the chief guest. He delivered the convocation address. Dr S. Ayyappan, in his address applauded the policies of the state government for making agriculture profitable which serves as a model for the entire country.

He stated that small farmers should be equipped with low-cost, light-weight, gender friendly and multi-purpose farm equipments to mitigate labour scarcity in the peak season. He opined that tools and techniques like Big data analytics, Internet of Things in farming, SAG’s, Image processing, artificial intelligence, deep/ machine learning, block chain technology, sensors and robotics etc should be deployed for smart farming. He emphasized the need to create appropriate information technology network through which the farmers will have information on crops and varieties, best practices, market prices and the gaps on demand and supply.

Nine gold medals for PG, Ph.D and 17 for UG programmes were awarded for meritorious students for their outstanding performance in academics.

Workshop on “In pursuit of improving TNAU’s global visibility and eminence’

Dr.N.Kumar, VC, presiding over the inaugural function, insisted on strengthening the student’s activities through capacity-building exercises to improve the professional calibre to the expectation of the industry for achieving progress in the ranking status. Mr Ritin Malhotra, Director, Times Higher Education, (Asian Region), from Singapore narrated their ranking procedure. Mr Sivakumar Natrajan, Chief Executive Officer, Ascendere explained in the depth, on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and ways to improve the status. Mr. Ashwin Fernandes spoke on the Queensland Asia, Queensland BRICS and Queensland India ranking procedures.

Precision Farming Development Centre

Skill Development Programme for “Greenhouse Operator” was conducted from 25 Feb to 25 Mar, 2019 by Precision Farming Development Centre, Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, TNAU, Coimbatore as per the Agricultural Skill Council of India norms. The programme was funded by National Committee on Plasticulture Application in Horticulture, Ministry of Agriculture, and Government of India. Twenty-three trainees from various districts of Tamil Nadu participated. The valedictory session was held on 25Mar, 2019. Dr. N. Kumar, VC, presided over the function and released a book, “Protected Cultivation and Precision Farming Technologies”.

Grantsmanship Workshop to Empower Young Faculty

The Directorate of Research organized a “Grantsmanship Workshop” during 19-23 Mar, 2019 to encourage young faculty member in writing the winning research proposals for fetching grants through externally
funded projects. Dr. N. Kumar, VC, inaugurated the workshop, presided by Dr N.K. Krishnakumar, former DDG (Horticulture), ICAR, New Delhi. Dr N Kumar emphasized the importance of research grants in augmenting financial support to undertake high-quality research. Dr N.K. Krishnakumar narrated the need of obtaining outside financial support, and offered a series of strategies to win over the competitive research grants. Dr K.S. Subramanian, Director of Research, presented the overview of orchestrating a winning proposal, besides providing technologies of acquring research grants from various funding sources.

Fourth Convocation

The fourth convocation of the university was held on 9 Mar, 2019 at the main campus, Shivamogga. Shri N.H. Shivashankara Reddy, Pro-Chancellor and Minister for Agriculture, Government of Karnataka conferred the degrees to the graduates.
 
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Director General of ICAR & Secretary, DARE, New Delhi was the chief guest and delivered the convocation address. During the convocation 240 degrees in B.Sc. Agric., B.Sc. Horti. and B.Sc. Forestry; 92 M.Sc. degrees, and 11 Ph.D. were conferred. The university awarded 23 gold medals to meritorious students. During the occasion, Dr M.K. Naik, VC, presented the brief report and the achievements of the University.

8th Convocation

The eighth convocation of The UHS, Bagalkot was organized on 27 Feb, 2019.



During the convocation 18 University gold medals, 40 Donors gold medals were awarded to the eligible graduate and post graduate students. In addition, 428 B.Sc.(Hort.), 150 M.Sc.(Hort.) and 22 Ph.D.(Hort.) degrees were conferred to the eligible students (in-person or in-absentia). Shri M. C. Managuli, Minister of Horticulture and the Pro- Chancellor of The university, Bagalkot presided over the convocation. Dr K. V. Prabhu Chairperson, Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority, Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, New Delhi was the chief guest who delivered the convocation address. Dr K. M. Indiresh, VC, Members of Board of Management, Members of the Academic Council, the staff members and the students were present during the convocation. Dr Y.K. Kotikal, Registrar, led the academic procession and took the signature of Pro-Chancellor for the entire list of graduation conferred during the convocation.

Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Union Agricultural Minister, Government of India, handed him the award during 14th Agricultural Science Congress, at New Delhi on 20 Feb, 2019. Director-General, ICAR, New Delhi was present on this occasion.

The prestigious Krishi Shiksha
Samman Award was awarded to the CCSHAU, Hisar by Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO, Niti Ayog. Prof. K.P Singh, VC, received the award (on behalf of the university). This is the second occasion when the CCSHAU was bestared this award. Earlier it was presented to the university in 2015.

Champion’s Trophy in T.T. and Quiz

The College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Pantnagar University, has been organizing All-India Veterinary Colleges’ Badminton, Table-tennis and Professional Quiz competitions every year.

This year the competitions were organized during 14-16 Mar 2019, in which the teams of Pantvarsity lifted championship trophy in Table Tennis competitions of boys and girls (both), and also Professional Quiz competition, securing first position. In the girls’ events of badminton, Patna’s team and in boys’ event of badminton the Hisar’s team were the winner. This year’s event was the biggest of all the years, in which 18 teams from all parts of India, with 282 students, participated. The teams were from the Colleges of Veterinary Sciences, Amritsar, Anand, Bikaner, Durg, Hisar, Junagarh, Karnal, Kolkata, Kumarganj, Ludhiana, Mathura, Meerut, Navasari, Pantnagar, Patna, R.S. Pura (Jammu) and S.K. Nagar (Gujarat), besides from Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar.

Sixth Position in GSIRF

The Government of Gujarat conducted the Gujarat
State Institutional Rating through Gujarat State Institutional Rating Framework (GSIRF) for all the universities of Gujarat. The result was declared on 27 Feb, 2019 in which the JAU secured the sixth position in Gujarat. The rating obtained was four stars out of five (4/5).

It was conferred to him during XVI national symposium on "Animal genetic resources for food and social security” organized by Society for Conservation of Domestic Animal Biodiversity, during 7 - 8 Feb, 2019 at National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal, (Harayana). The paper and its presentation was prepared by Dr S. Sajid Ali and it presented by Dr Vikas Vohra, Principal Scientist, NDRI, Karnal, the co-author of the paper.

The prize was given to him at National Workshop, organized by BAIF Development Research Foundation on 27 Feb, 2019 at Pune. He also secured the first prize in Poster Presentation on topic “Ameliorative effect of Curculigo orchioides on subacute Cypermethrin toxicity, with special reference to male reproductive system in Wistar rats”. It was handed over to him at National Symposium and Annual Conference of Indian Society Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, organized by AAU, Anand.

Mahindra Samriddhi Award for HC&RI, TNAU, Periyakulam

Horticultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Periyakulam, one of the constituent colleges of TNAU, bagged “Krishi Shiksha Samman 2019” national award from Mahindra Samriddhi India of M/s Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. It was awarded for innovative technology on “Ultra high density planting (UHDP) in mango, guava and moringa”. The technology has brought a significant impact among the mango, guava and moringa farmers of Tamil Nadu. Field demonstrations of UHDP were laid at the college for the benefit of farmers.
The Mahindra Samriddhi award containing
a trophy, certificate and cash prize of Rs. 2.11 lakhs was given on 18.03.2019 during the Mahindra Samriddhi India – Agri awards 2019 function, held at New Delhi. Dr T. Arumugam, Dean, Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam received the award and honour on behalf of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
