about the germplasm of late-
maturing mango
The horticulture scientists of Pantvarsity were successful in developing late-maturing mango germplasm, which will provide mature mango in September. Their germplasm will help in developing mango varieties that will extend the availability of mango in the market in September also, which will fetch more price and will increase the income of the farmer’s. The scientists were working on late-maturing mangoes or the last few years, and selected 5 germplasm of late-maturing and 7 germplasm of perennial mango, out of which one germplasm PMSS-1 (Pant Mango 1) matures from last week of August to first week of September. The quality of this mango is good, and each fruit weights 230-260 grams on an average. The research is in the last phase and a late-maturing variety will be released soon.

Transplanting of Paddy by Machine in Limited Area

Demonstration of working of paddy
transplanter before Vice-Chancellor,
Prof. A.K. Misra and other scientists
This season, Pantvarsity transplanted paddy by automatic paddy transplanter in a limited area at NE Borlaug Crop Research Centre. This machine uses mat-type seedling, for which nursery is raised in special trays. This transplanter has one engine and transplants seedlings in 8 rows. The row-to-row distance is 228 mm and plant-to-plant distance is 145 mm. The size of the mat is 430×230×20 mm, in which seedlings are raised that become ready to transplant in 25 days. The machine needs one driver and one labourer, and it can transplant a field of about 1 ha in one day. The use of this machine saves 75-80 % labour per hectare work-hour. Puddling of the field is necessary before using this machine. The equidistant transplanting of seedlings enables their good growth and hence good production.

KERALA UNIVERSITY OF FISHERIES AND OCEAN STUDIES, PANANGAD

Water-Quality Study after Flood

Scientists of KUFOS, as a part of the societal commitment, extended free water-quality analysis to the flood-affected population in Kerala. The quality of water was affected badly after flood due to contamination with debris, fescal sources and carcasses. Samples collected, between 23 Aug and 14 Sep 2018, from 4348 wells in the flood-affected areas were tested in the soil and water analysis laboratory of KUFOS, Panagad, Kochi. The study lead by Dr Anu Gopinath, Assistant Professor of Chemical Oceanography, revealed decrease in pH below 5 and almost 90% of the well water showed pH values below quality standard of drinking water.About 30% of the wells showed an increase in total dissolved solid content due to heavy run-off experienced under the floods. From microbial point of view, 90% of water sources including wells showed high faecal contamination. The team suggested proper chlorination or super chlorination as well as filtration methods through appropriate agencies. The possibility of spreading of water-borne diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, jaundice, etc. from the contaminated water was prevented after the necessary precautions were taken by the authorities in the light of the KUFOS study.

Formation of Task Force

A Task Force was constituted by Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, for making an assessment on the flood inundation in Kerala and to suggest mitigation measures to the Government. The first meeting of the task was held on 19 Sep. 2018. Distinguished experts from various fields including Irrigation, Electricity, Dam Management, Environment, Bio- diversity, Geology, Hydrology as well as faculties of KUFOS formed the task force. The task force would primarily concentrate on areas such as prediction and mitigation of rain- based water inflow, siltation and discharge from the reservoirs, collection of hydrological inundation data along the river basins and lakes, impact of human interventions along the river and the impact on bio-diversity. Different working groups were formed in the above-mentioned areas for gathering information and identification of gaps. The Task Force will submit a detailed report with practical remedial measures to the Government of Kerala within 6 months.
