A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Central Agricultural University, Imphal and the ICAR’s -Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Kochi at CAU, Lamphelpat, Imphal on 9 May, 2018. The main objective of the MoU is to strengthen the students research programme of the university in fish-processing technology, fish- quality assurance and management, fisheries micro-biology, bio-technology and sanitation, fisheries bio-chemistry, fishing technology and fisheries engineering, fish packaging, fisheries extension, economics etc.
 

International Yoga Day at CAU, Imphal

4th International Yoga Day at CAU, Imphal
The 4th International Day of Yoga was celebrated at Central Agricultural University, Lamphelpat, Imphal (Manipur) on 21 June 2018. As a part of the programme, Shri David Singh Hijam, Yoga Instructor, gave a valuable lecture-cum-demonstration of Yoga, imparting its mental, physical and health benefits to the participants on this occasion. The programme was presided by Dr S. Basanta Singh, Director of Instruction; and Shri M.C. Jublani, Comptroller, as guest of honour. The International Yoga Day was observed to create awareness about the benefits of yoga practice, for attaining peace of life.

Third International Symposium on Aquaculture and Fisheries Education

Theme: Fisheries Education for Sustainable Blue Economy

The 3rd International Symposium on Aquaculture and Fisheries Education (ISAFE-3), a triennial event of the Asian Fisheries Society, was organized by the ICAR’s-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai, (Maharashtra), in collaboration with Indian Fisheries Association and Asian Fisheries Society- Indian Branch at CIFE, Mumbai during 16-18 May 2018. The theme of the ISAFE-3 was “Fisheries Education for Sustainable Blue Economy”.
The Symposium was inaugurated on 16 May 2018 at the CIFE, Versova, Mumbai. The chief guest, Shri Mahadev Jankar, Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries, Government of Maharashtra was accompanied by luminaries like Padma Vibhushan Dr Anil Kakodkar, former Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission; Dr J. K. Jena, President of Asian Fisheries Society, and DDG (Fisheries Science), ICAR; Dr C. Virapat, DG, Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia Pacific, (Thailand); and Prof. S. Kaushik, Chair Professor, European Research Area, Spain flagged off the Symposium. The inaugural function was followed by keynote address by Padma Vibhushan Dr Anil Kakodkar.
The event was attended by 260 participants, including 15 delegates from the countries such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Ethiopia, France, Nigeria, Bhutan, South Korea, Nepal and Spain The symposium had 6 major technical sessions on various themes. A special session on Course Curricula in Asia-Pacific region for better job opportunities, Chaired by Dr N. S. Rathore, DDG (Agriculture Education), ICAR.
In the plenary session, various recommendations emanated from different technical sessions and deliberations were presented, discussed and finalized. Dr T. Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR, was the chief guest in the valedictory function. He highlighted the immense opportunities provided by ocean resource and the need for their utilization for societal benefit by developing entrepreneurs for tomorrow. He opined that Blue Economy must flourish, besides being sustainable, responsible and profitable. He stated that collaboration and co-ordination is the key to success. Dr J. K. Jena, Dr Gopal Krishna, Dr S. D. Tripathi and Dr C. Virapat also spoke on the occasion.

Release of New Baby Corn Hybrid

The 61th Annual Maize Workshop of the AICRP on Maize was organized by the ICAR’s -Indian Institute of Maize Research, at Bajaura, dist. Kullu during 7-9 Apr. 2018. The scientist team of Main Maize Research Station, AAU, Godhra participated in the workshop.

Dr M. B. Patel, presented the work done during Rabi (2016-17) and Kharif (2017). The Variety Identification Committee meeting was convened chaired by of Dr I. S. Solanki, Assistant Director General (Crop Sciences), ICAR, New Delhi on 8 Apr. 2018. Hybrid GAYMH-1 was identified by Central Variety Identification Committee and recommended for release and cultivation in Peninsular zone (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu) and Central West Zone (Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat).

An MoU for Bio-NPK Liquid Bio-fertilizers Technology licensing was signed between Anand Agricultural University, Anand and M/s Margosa Biogrow India Pvt. Ltd, Vadodara on 1 June, 2018 on the auspicious occasion of opening ceremony of consultation workshop on Doubling farmers’ income by 2022, a strategic initiative jointly organized at AAU, Anand, in the presence of Shri Parshottam Rupala, Minister of State, Department of Agricultural Co-operation and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India; and Shri Jaydrathsinh Parmar, Minister of State (Department of Agriculture), Government of Gujarat.

Recognition to Methane degrading Bacteria

Dr Yogeshvari K. Jhala, Assistant Professor (Micro-biology), Department of Agricultural Micro-biology, B.A. College of Agriculture, AAU, Anand established Indian record for innovative research on unique methane-degrading bacteria. This record was registered in India Book of Records-2018 (an official Indian record book, registered with the Government of India RNI no. HARENG/2010/32259.

Visit to University of Queensland, Australia

Visiting Scientists
Dr Subrota Hati recently visited University of Queensland, (Australia), for conducting research work on “Bio-transformation and bio-availability of Soy is Flavones in a fermented Soy Beverage” at School of Agriculture and Food Sciences, University of Queensland, Australia, under the guidance of Dr Sangeeta Prakash and Prof. Bhesh Bhandari, from Jan. 2018 to June, 2018. The entire expenses were borne by the DBT, New Delhi under Indo-Australian Career Boosting Gold Fellowship 2016-17.

Dr M.B. Patel, Unit Head and Associate Research Scientist, MMRS, Godhra, visited Nakhon Sawan Field Crop Research Centre, Takfa, (Thailand) to attend Project Annual Review and Planning meeting. Dr M.B. Patel presented the results of CRMA trials and future action plan of Main Maize Research Station, AAU, Godhra.

Three hybrids were contributed by All India Co-ordinated Research Project. The AAU gave the license from CIMMYT for exclusive right of product development for the promising hybrid CAH1511, ZH161032 and VH11130.
 

MoU with Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, the U.S.A.

The Anand Agricultural University, Anand entered into MoU with Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in January, 2018, Advancement in research and education through collaborative approaches of mutual benefits. As a part of MoU, a team of three delegates, viz. Dr K.B. Kathiria (Director of Research & Dean, PG Studies), Dr K.P. Patel (Principal & Dean, Faculty of Agriculture) and Dr Y.C. Zala (Principal and Dean, Faculty of Agriculture Business Management) visited the FAMU during 18 -22 June 2018.
Dr Larry Robinson, President, FAMU, appreciated the efforts taken by the AAU to collaborate with FAMU under the MoU. The members of delegation suggested that in the first phase, the faculty-exchange programmes of short duration may be initiated for the capacity building Human Resource Development in serve specialized areas, viz. Geo-spatial or remote-sensing technologies for NRM, methane emission in paddy fields and its mitigation options through micro-biological or bio-technological approaches, indicators heavy-metals contaminations, and bio-remediation or mitigation techniques, use of medicinal plant for pharmaceuticals, food-safety research, drone technology and cyber security, molecular breeding and bio-technological approaches for the desired quality products etc.

National Seminar on “Extension Strategies for Doubling Farmers’ Income for Livelihood Security”

Society of Extension Education, Gujarat and Anand Agricultural University, Anand organized a National seminar on “Extension Strategies for Doubling the Farmers’ Income for Livelihood Security”, including seven thematic areas, viz., (i) extension system, (ii) agricultural programme for livelihood, (iii) role of ICT, technological practices, (iv) human resource management, (v) social and economical dimensions, (vi) success and case studies of farmers. In this seminar Dr N.C. Patel, VC, AAU; Dr Ashok Patel, VC, SDAU; Dr P. H. Vataliya ,VC, Kamdhenu University; and Dr Arun Patel, DEE, AAU & President, SEEG, inaugurated the seminar. Dr N.C. Patel, who was Chairman of National Seminar addressed the delegates on clarion call of Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, of doubling the farmer’s income by 2022.

An Animal Health camp-cum-Kisan Goshthi was organized at Manas Diara Danapur & Badipur village, Patna. More than 500 animals were examined and treated for various diagnostic parameters. The camp was organized jointly by Bihar Animal Sciences University and Institute of Animal Health & Production, Patna. Veterinary Doctors from IAHP and scientists of Bihar Veterinary Campus participated actively in this health camp.

Animal Disaster Manage-ment certificate course for students of Bihar Veterinary College, Patna was conducted during 3-8 May 2018 by Veterinary Emergency Response Unit of Bihar Animal Sciences University, Patna. Twenty three students of 4th year under graduate course completed it successfully.

Prof. K.P. Singh, Vice-Chancellor, CCSHAU, was invited as the chief guest at Convocation of University of Agriculture and Forestry, Rampur, (Chitwan), Nepal. On this occasion, Shri K.P. Sharma Oli, Prime Minister of Nepal was also present as the Chancellor of the University.
While delivering his convocation address, Prof. Singh emphasized on the commercialization of agricultural education so that the income of the farmers could increase.
Shri K.P. Sharma Oli, Prime Minister of Nepal, in his address, praised the contribution of India in the upliftment of Nepal’s agriculture, and also the contribution of Haryana and CCSHAU in it. He congratulated the CCSHAU for receiving Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institutions Award and Pandit Deen dayal Upadhyaya Krishi Vigyan Protsahan award, and the recognition of CCSHAU world-wide. It is notable that in February 2018 a bilateral agreement was signed by the Vice Chancellors of both Universities for cooperation in the field of education and research in agricultural science and related subjects.

MoU with National Chung Cheng University of Taiwan

On the invitation of Ministry of Education, Taiwan Government, a delegation of Vice-Chancellors from Indian universities, led by Association of Indian Universities, visited Taiwan on 19 June, 2018. Prof. K. P. Singh, Vice-Chancellor, CCSHAU, Hisar represented the Indian Agricultural Universities as a member of Taiwan-India Presidents Forum-2018.
According to Prof. K.P. Singh, inspired by the common objectives to promote and accelerate the progress of research and training in various disciplines of agricultural research, the MoU been signed between Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University and National Chung Cheng University of Taiwan. Prof. K.P. Singh, VC, CCSHAU, Dr Zhang-Hua Fong, President, National Chung Cheng University, signed the agreement in Taiwan. Under this MoU both the universities will co-operate with each other in agricultural research.
Under the MoU, was signed for exchange of faculty, students, farmers, industrialists and technologists; exchange of germplasm and breeding material of mutual interest; exchange of scientific literature, information and methodology; as available and required in programme of common interest. Dual degree and Joint degree programme will be started with Taiwan University. Progressive farmers of Haryana will visit Taiwan University and will get modern agricultural information. Similarly, farmers of Taiwan will visit CCSHAU and will be able to learn technologies developed by this university. Apart from this, each party will ensure appropriate protection of Intellectual Property Rights generated through cooperation. For the research results obtained through joint activities, the grant of IPR will be sought by both the parties jointly.

To strengthen institutional capacity to prepare skilled professionals for market-driven agriculture, a Workshop on Institutional Development Plan was organized in Haryana Raj Bhavan, Chandigarh on 31 May, 2018. Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, the Governor of Haryana, inaugurated this workshop. On this occasion, Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University and Michigan State University in the presence of Mr. O.P. Dhankar, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, signed an MoU for mutual co-operation in the design and implementation of Institutional Development Plan.

National Start-up Summit

A National Start-up Summit was organized in the university during 1-2 June 2018. On this occasion, Dr Satyapal Singh, Minister of State for Human Resource Development (Higher Education), Government of India, was the chief guest. Dr N.S. Rathore, DDG (Agricultural Education), ICAR, New Delhi; and Dr D.D. Buler, Assistant, Vice-President, Research and Graduation Studies, Michigan, (the USA); and Dr Karim Maredia also graced the occasion. Nearly 600 agricultural scientists from more than 22 SAUs and Management Institutes besides young entrepreneurs participated in the summit. Addressing the gathering Dr Satyapal Singh said that to give constructive direction to its ideas, a Start-up venture needs strong and decisive support, and the Government of India was committed to provide all possible guidance and help to the young entrepreneurs. He also said that the patent filing etc. has been made easier under the Start-up India programme. Prof. K.P. Singh, Vice-Chancellor, CCSHAU, Hisar presided over the function. He told that CCSHAU is earnestly working towards promoting the Start-up ventures and has identified 130 technologies for commercialization and adoption.

Prime Minister of Nepal, Rt. Mr. K.P. Sharma Oli, visited Pantnagar University. He was on a 3-day visit to India on the invitation of Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.
On this occasion, Dr K.K. Paul, Governor of Uttarakhand and Chancellor of Pantvarsity, presented the degree of Doctorate of Science (Honoris causa) to Shri Oli, in the special convocation organized in the university.
Mr Oli said that the two countries can work together for eliminating poverty in the region and make the people happy. Appreciating the achievements of Pantnagar University, he expressed gratitude and thanked the university for conferring the honorary degree upon him.
Dr Paul in his presidential address said that Uttarakhand shares a lot with Nepal from history, culture, trade to the people-to-people contact, and that the co-operation between the two can bring significant improvement in lives of people, besides protecting environment and natural resources, and in facing the common challenges.

A 5-member delegation of Nepal visited Pantvarsity on 17-18 June 2018. The delegation was lead by Dr Yogendra Kumar Karki, Joint Secretary, Land Management and Co-operative Society, Ministry of Agriculture, Nepal. The delegation had an orientation meeting with the Registrar, Deans and Directors of the university under the chairmanship of Prof. A.K. Misra, Vice-Chancellor, where the members of the delegation were given a preview of research and extension programmes of the university by the respective officers.

AICRP on Small Millets awarded Best Performing Centre of India

Saheed Gundhar College of Agriculture and Research Station, Jagdalpur, received best-performing centre of AICRP on Small Millets for the year 2017-18 by Dr I.S. Solanki, Deputy Director General (F & FC), ICAR, New Delhi. It was handed over to him during the 29th Annual Group Meeting on Small Millets at IGKV on 12 Apr. 2018. During this programme, Dr S.S. Rao, Project Coordinator of (AICRP on Small Millets), Director Research Services, IGKV and other dignitaries were present.

Release of New Varieties

   
Zinc Rice Variety
 
The IGKV released five new varieties for commercial cultivation. The varieties developed in co-operation with BARC, Trombay ar Chhattisgarh Dubraj, and Mutant-1, which yields satisfactory even with less fertilizer input. The two other new varieties of paddy are Chhattisgarh Zinc Rice-2 and Chhattisgarh Dhan Barhasal Selection-1. In comparison with the other nutri-rich varieties the zinc variety yields more up to 42 q/ ha.

The 14th Combined Joint AGRESCO meeting of SAUs and Kamdhenu University was held at University Auditorium, JAU, Junagadh during 3-5 Apr. 2018. The inaugural function of the meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Dr A. R. Pathak, Vice-Chancellor, JAU, Junagadh. Dr N.C. Patel, Vice-Chancellor, AAU, Anand; Dr C.J. Dangaria, Vice-Chancellor, NAU, Navsari; Prof. (Dr) Ashok A. Patel, Vice-Chancellor, SDAU, Sardarkrushinagar; Dr P.H. Vataliya, Vice-Chancellor, Kamdhenu University, Gandhinagar; and Dr B.M. Modi, Director of Agriculture., Government of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, were present. Shri R.C. Faldu, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry, Government of Gujarat, graced the valedictory ceremony of this meeting and addressed the scientists. He also appreciated the scientists for bringing out a good number of crop varieties and research recommendations for the benefit of both the farmers as well as the scientific community. In the 14th Combined Joint AGRESCO Meeting, overall 46 technologies or recommendations were made for the benefit of farmers; and 41 recommendations were made for scientific community. Besides, seven varieties viz. groundnut [Gujarat Groundnut-HPS 2 (GG HPS 2)]; cotton [Gujarat Junagadh Cotton 102 (GJ. Cot 102) and Gujarat Cotton Hybrid 22 (G. Cot. Hy. 22)]; brinjal [Gujarat Round Brinjal 5 (GRB 5)]; tomato [Gujarat Tomato 6 (GT 6)]; okra [Gujarat Okra 6 (GO 6)] and sesame [Gujarat Til 6 (GT 6)] were recommended for release in the state by the JAU, Junagadh. In addition, 121 new technical programmes were formulated to initiate new research activities that provide solutions for the applied and basic problems of agriculture and all its allied disciplines.

Varieties Released in April, 2018

Groundnut: GG HPS 2

Gujarat Groundnut- HPS2
(GG HPS 2)
Gujarat Groundnut - HPS2 is a large seeded confectionery-type groundnut variety for growing in Gujarat state during kharif season. This variety recorded a mean pod yield of 2,835 kg/ha. Besides, it has shown more resistance to tikka and rust diseases compared with the check varieties.
 

Cotton: GJ.Cot 102

Gujarat Junagadh Cotton 102
(G.J. Cot 102)
Gujarat Junagadh Cotton-102 (GJ.Cot 102) is non Bt cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) for growing in Gujarat state under irrigated condition. It has recorded a mean seed cotton yield of 2,215 kg/ha. GJ.Cot-102 gives lint yield 769 kg/ha, and ginning out-turn 35.1 % and has 18.32 % oil content. This variety is medium late in maturity.

 

Cotton: G.Cot.Hy 22

Gujarat Cotton Hybrid 22
(G.Cot.Hy 22)
Gujarat Cotton Hybrid-22 (G.Cot.Hy 22) is non Bt hybrid cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) under irrigated condition for Gujarat state. The hybrid has recorded 2,865 kg/ha mean seed-cotton yield, and It gives 1,010 kg/ha lint yield. It has 34.7 % ginning out-turn and 18.37 % oil content. The hybrid is medium late in maturity.

Brinjal: GRB 5

Gujarat Round Brinjal 5 (GRB 5)
Gujarat Round Brinjal 5 (GRB5) variety for the farmers of Gujarat growing brinjal crop during late kharif-rabi season. The variety has recorded 395.04 q/ha fruit yield. The fruits of GRB5 are medium in size with medium round shape and light green in colour with purple shadow strip and good shining. The variety is found superior against insect-pests and in disease resistance.

Tomato: GT 6

Gujarat Tomato 6 (GT 6)
Gujarat Tomato 6 (GT6) is new variety of tomato for the farmers of Gujarat growing tomato crop during late kharif-rabi season. The variety has recorded a mean fruit yield of 316.05 q/ha. The fruits are medium in size, flat round in shape with an attractive red colour and 3 to 4 locules with high T.S.S. It is found superior against leaf curl and fruit borer infestations when compared to all the check varieties.

Okra: GO 6


Gujarat Okra 6 (GO 6)
Gujarat Junagadh Okra 6 (GJO6) is for the farmers of Gujarat State growing okra crop during kharif season. This variety has recorded a mean fruit yield of 125.77 q/ha. The YVMV incidence is found less in this variety when compared to all the check varieties at Junagadh and GJO-3 and Pusa Sawani at Anand. Besides, the variety is found superior against fruit borer, Jassids and white fly to all the checks at Junagadh, whereas at Anand the variety is found superior against fruit borer to all the checks and was found comparable to all the checks for Jassids and white fly incidences.

Sesame: GT 6

Gujarat Okra 6 (GO 6)
Gujarat Til 6 (GT 6) is for the farmers of Gujarat growing sesame in kharif rainfed condition. The variety has recorded the seed yield of 1,010 kg/ha. The oil content is 49.68 % and oil-yield is 502 kg/ha, which is 17.60 % higher than of G. Til 4 (427 kg/ha). The variety possesses white and bold seeds.

The 14th Convocation of JNKVV, Jabalpur was held on 12 Apr. 2018 in the glorious presence of Mrs. Anandi Ben Patel, H.E. the Governor of Madhya Pradesh and Chancellor of the university. During the occasion 8 students received different academic awards, including gold medals and cash prizes instituted by the university and individuals. In all, 23 Ph.D., 230 Masters and 440 Bachelors students were declared successful in different streams of education. For the first time, during past 5 decades, the dress code for convocation function was changed to Indian national dress, with jacket (bundi), turban (saafa) and stole (angavstrum).

Dr. Paroda made valuable contributions in the field of agriculture, both as researcher and as an able administrator. His contributions in the field of resource management of Genetics and Plant Breeding are unparallel visionary programme at national level, including his contribution for NATP, establishment of world’s largest and modern National Gene Bank, Concept of creation of NASC Complex.

Shri Mahadeorao Jankar, Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fishery Development, Maharashtra State inaugurated it, in the presence of Guest of Honour, Shri. K.V. Kurundkar (IAS), Secretary, ADF; and Prof. Ashish M. Paturkar, VC, Chairman of the function. Secretary Shri. K.V. Kurundkar, IAS explained the importance of animal husbandry farming for the livelihood security and boost-up the income of farmers. Shri. Mahadeorao Jankar, presided guidance on various issues like role of animal husbandry in doubling the income, advantage of government schemes for dairy, poultry and goat farming. On this occasion 10 progressive farmers were felicitated for excellent work in dairy, poultry and goat enterprises.

Total 10 varieties developed or released at combined joint AGRESCO- 2018 from various Research Stations and constituent Colleges of Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari including two each in Rice, Adenium and one each in tur, mung bean, nagli, sorghum, tomato and Melia dubia.
 

Rice: Gujarat Rice – 15 (GR-15)

Gujarat Rice – 15 (GR-15)
Bio-fortified rice culture, NVSR-6121 developed by Main Rice Research Station, Navsari performed very well (5,540 kg/ha) in Gujarat state giving 10.6 %, 19.9 % and 16.1 % higher grain yield and easy threshing ability than the checks Dandi, NAUR-1 and GNR-3 respectively. It has long bold grain, long panicle, more productive tillers and more number of grains per panicle. It contains high zinc in grains (21.58 ppm) than the check varieties (Dandi 12.7 ppm, NAUR-1 14.62 ppm and GNR-3 15.7 ppm) along with other good quality characters. NVSR-6121 is moderately resistant to bacterial leaf blight, grain discoloration and sheath rot. It is tolerant to brown plant- hoppers and moderately resistant to stem-borer, leaf-folder and sheath-mite. This variety is recommended for transplanted rice-growing areas of Gujarat.

Rice: Gujarat Rice Hybrid-2 (GRH-2)

Mid-late rice hybrid NVSR -H-1011 developed by Regional Rice Research Station, Vyara performed well (6129 kg/ha) in Gujarat state, where it gave 7.1% and 17.9% more grain yield than the best hybrid check US 312 and the best variety GNR-3 respectively. The NVSR-H-1011 has medium slender grain shows intermediate amylase and high head rice recovery. It is moderately resistant to bacterial leaf blight, leaf blast, grain discolouration and sheath rot. It is tolerant to insect pests like BPH, WBPH, leaf-folder and stem-borer. It is recommended for rice growing areas of Gujarat state.

Pigeonpea: Gujarat Tur-104 (GT-104)

The average yield of pigeon pea variety NPMK-15-05 developed by Pulse Research Station, Navsari (GT-104) is 1890 kg/ha. It gives 21.9 %, 21.2 %, 12.5 % and 27.6 % more grain yield than the checks Vaishali, GJP-1, AGT-2 and BDN–2, respectively. It matures 160-170 days (medium group), is semi-spreading in nature, has red flower colour, long pod, 5-7 seeds per pod which are creamy in colour. It has high yield potential and is resistant to SMD. The variety is recommended for kharif season in Gujarat.

Finger millet: Gujarat Nagli-8 (GN-8)

WN-585, the finger millet early variety (3065 kg/ha), performed well with 21.3 % and 13.7 % yield advantage over national checks VL-149 and VL-352 developed by Hill Millet Research Station, Waghai. WN-585 has attractive red coloured bold grain (2.61 g per 1000 seed weight), good and nutritious quality, early and synchronous maturity, erect growing and non-lodging plant type. It is moderately resistant to leaf, neck and finger blast as well as foot rot diseases under field condition with tolerance reaction to pest like stem borer and aphids. WN-585 is recommended for kharif cultivation in Gujarat as GN-8.

Tomato: Gujarat Tomato-7 (GT-7)

Tomato genotype NTL 12-01 (284.2 q/ha) developed by ASPEE College of Horticulture, Navsari performed well under South Middle and North Gujarat regions where, it exhibited overall 20.63, 20.29 and 21.04 % increased fruit yield over standard checks viz; JT 3 (235.6 q/ha), AT 3 (225.7 q/ha) and DVRT 2 (224.3 q/ha), respectively. The genotype showed less damage by fruit borer, whitefly as well as leaf miner as compared to standard checks. The genotype NTL 12-01 is recommended for cultivation of farmers of Gujarat regions as GT 7.

Adenium: Gujarat Adenium-1 (GAd-1)

Adenium variety Gujarat Adenium-1 (GAd.-1) developed by ASPEE College of Horticulture, Navsari is a unique ornamental plant bearing attractive multipetalous red coloured flowers with 15 petals per flower with good flower longevity. It can be propagated by grafting on local pink root stock. The nursery men dealing with ornamental plants are recommended to grow adenium variety GAd-1 under polyhouse for higher commercial value in Gujarat.

The ASPEE College of Horticulture, Navsari developed GAd-2 is unique ornamental plant bearing reddish purple coloured flowers having dual whorls each of 5 petals i.e. 10 petals in each flower along with good flower longevity. It can be propagated by grafting on local pink root stock. The nurserymen dealing with ornamental plants are advised to grow adenium GAd-2 under polyhouse for higher commercial value.

Malabar Neem: Gujarat Navsari Melia Dubia-1 (GNMD-1)

Malabar Neem
The College of Forestry, Navsari developed by Malabar Neem (Melia dubia Cav.) tree variety GNMD-1 has performed very well in South Gujarat. After four years, the GNMD-1 has attained 10.90 m height with girth at breast height (GBH) of 49.50 cm. The volume at four years of age has been estimated 224.41 m3/ha with good biomass of 103.23 tonnes/ha. It has clear bole up to 3.70 m free from knots. Its bole is round and clean. The GNMD-1 showed superiority of 9.0, 105.6 and 47.3 % in height; 7.84, 35.6 and 17.9 % in girth at breast height, and 26.77, 278.24 and 104.60 % in volume and biomass, over checks Kshitiz (NC), Ritu (NC) and Bahumukhi (NC), respectively. No incidence of insect pest was observed in GNMD-1. The variety GNMD-1 is recommended for farmers of South Gujarat for plantation.

Total 39 input dealers from South Gujarat received certificate during the programme.

Her Excellency the Chancellor of M.P., Smt Anandi Ben Patel, visited the NDVSU, Jabalpur for inauguration of Pashu Pradarshini and PashuPaalak Ghosthi on 12 Apr. 2018. During her visit Vice-Chancellor Prof. P. D. Juyal showed various stalls during Pashu Pradarshini. The activities demonstrated during the pradarshini include the panchgavya unit and their products, wormi-compost, area-specific mineral mixture, prosthetic limb designed by students and staff, on-spot milk adulteration kits etc. She also distributed goats to tribal farmers, fish seeds, Kadaknath chicks and their eggs to the farmers gathered from all the nearby districts of Jabalpur.

Dr Rathore very keenly observed the various faculties at the farm including Dairy unit, Poultry unit and College of Fishery Sciences, Jabalpur. At Fishery College, he distributed the fish seeds to the farmers, and at Poultry unit, distributed Kadaknath fertile eggs to various farmers for the propagation of indigenous Kadaknath breed.

The OUAT, Bhubaneswar signed MoU with Space Application Centre, ISRO at Ahmadabad on 20 Apr. 2018, for collaborative research on use of satellite technology as a tool for holistic development of agriculture. The MoU was signed by Prof. S. Pasupalak, VC, on behalf of OUAT and Dr Tapan Mishra, Director, on behalf of Space Application Centre, ISRO. The MoU aims at capacity building of the students and faculties of OUAT through specialized training programmes conducted by the scientists of SAC; strengthening of teaching and research on application of satellite technology in agriculture and allied areas; sustainable development of natural resources through crop planning and real-time assessment of field problems and timely advisory to the farmers to reduce crop loss.

Development of Ragi Thresher-cum-Pearler

A ragi thresher-cum-pearler for threshing, pearling and cleaning operation was developed through the AICRP on Utilization of Animal Energy, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology. This machine can be operated by a pair of bullocks in rotary mode or 1.0 hp single-phase electric motor. The average output of this machine is 90 kg/hr, with 93% threshing efficiency.

It is an early-maturing variety with long fruits group. Its flowers are purple, borne in cluster and solitary. Fruits are long, medium, thin, shining and deep-purple with green calyx. Its average yield is 242 q/acre.

It is an early to mid-season variety that requires about 93 days for flowering. Flowers are single, coloured, Korean type white with yellow centre. It produces on an average 331 flowers per plant. It is moderately resistant to Septoria leaf-spot disease.

It is a mid to late season variety that requires 122 days for flowering. Flowers are white in colour, decorative type and 6.9 cm in diameter, suitable for loose flower production. The flower yield is 71.8 q/acre. It is resistant to Septoria leaf-spot disease.
 

Production Technologies

Technology for drying

The drying technology ensures better handling and extends the shelf-life of onion. Dried onion can be stored for a long period of time at ambient temperature and made available during the off season. A pre- treatment dipping for red onion in 10% NaCl and for white onion in 0.1% KMS in combination with 10% NaCl for 45 minutes is required. Two-stage drying i.e. at 700 C for 3 hrs, followed by 550 C for 7 hr was found optimum for achieving good quality of dried onion.

Leno bags of potato

Leno III bags (56 x 115 cm, 50 g) reduced the cost of packaging by 70% and storage losses by 50% in comparison with hessian bags. Hence they are more economical and thus increase the profit.

Soybean variety SL 1074

SL 1074- soya-bean variety
The new soybean variety SL 1074 (Plate 1) has been identified for Northern Plains Zone. It gives an average grain yield of 1,917 kg/ha, which is 13.0% higher than that of the check PS 1347 (1,697 kg/ha). It is moderately resistant to yellow mosaic virus. Its grains contain 19.5% oil and 39.5% protein.

Soybean variety SL 1028

The new soybean variety SL 1074 (Plate 2) has been identified for Northern Plains Zone during 2018. It gave an average grain yield of 2,196 kg/ha, with 19.6% increase over. The check PS 1347 (1,836 kg/ha).It is moderately resistant to YMV. Its grains contain 19.8% oil and 39.2% protein.

It is medium tall (38.7 cm) with semi-spreading plants and bold seeds (54.3g/100 seed). It matures in 113 days, is resistant or moderately resistant to Fusarium wilt, and dry root rot, and is tolerant to pod borer (Helicoverpa) and pulse beetle. Its potential yield is 2,000-2,100 kg/ha. It is recommended for timely sown semi-irrigated to irrigated conditions of M.P.
 
 

Lentil variety RVL 13-7

It is identified for release for cultivation in Madhya Pradesh in the meeting of M.P-State Seed Sub-committee, held at Bhopal on 9 May, 2018. Its plant type is semi-erect, with medium height (36-40 cm) and branches having broad leaf, which makes it suitable for intercropping. It matures in 102 days, and is tolerant to wilt. Its potential yield is 1,300-2,300 kg/ha.

Raj Vijay Toria 3 (RVT 3)

It is identified for release for cultivation in Madhya Pradesh, in the meeting of M.P-State Seed Sub-committee held at Bhopal on 9 May, 2018. Its plant height is 118-138 (cm), maturity 93-99 days, number of primary branches /plant 5-6, and number of secondary branches 2-3. The seeds are yellow and round. It contains 41-44% oil. It is tolerant or resistant to white rust, Alternaria leaf blight on pods, powdery mildew, downy mildew and Sclerotinia stem rot. It has less infestation of aphids, and is tolerant to drought conditions and gives average yield of 1,105-1,600 kg/ha. It is suitable for rainfed and irrigated conditions.

Raj Vijay Mustard 2

It has been recommended for release by State Variety Release Committee, Department of Farmers’ Welfare and Agriculture Development, Govt. of M.P., Bhopal on 9 May, 2018, for the State of Madhya Pradesh. Moreover, this variety was released and notified by Central Variety Release committee earlier for Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir etc. Its plant height is 194-209 cm, it matures in 134 days and gives seed yield of 1,674-2,284 kg/ha. Seeds are round and reddish brown in colour. Seed index is 3.41 to 6.01 g and oil content is 39.51 to 41.20%. It is moderately resistant to white rust, Alternaria pod blight, stem rot, powdery and downy mildew, and has less infestation of aphids. It is recommended for timely sown irrigated conditions.

Soybean variety RVS 2007-6

It is identified in the 48th Annual Group Meeting of AICRP on Soybean, held at IGKVV, Raipur (CG) during 15-17 Apr 2018 for release in Central Zone. Plant type is semi-erect, spreading with medium height (70-75 cm). It bears branches with broad pointed leaf, shows medium maturing (101 days) and is suitable for double cropping and intercropping in rainfed situation, with potential yield 2,068 kg/ha. It shows multiple resistant for charcoal rot, leaf spot, stem fly, stem borers and defoliators.

It has been identified for south Zone (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh). It belongs to medium maturity group, and is found tolerant to sucking pests. Its with yield potential of 2,400 kg /ha.

36th Group Meeting of AICRP on Vegetable Crops

Group meeting of AICRP on vegetable crops was organized at Rajasthan Agricultural Research Institute, Durgapura- Jaipur during 18-21 May 2018 by the SKNAU, Jobner and the Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh of the ICAR. The inaugural function was held on 18 May 2018, in which Dr Kirti Singh, ex-chairman ASRB was the chief-guest, Dr P.S. Rathore, Vice-Chancellor, SKNAU, Jobner, presided over the function, and Dr T. Jankiram, Assitant Director General (Hort.), ICAR, New Delhi was guest of honour. Dr V.K. Yadav, Director of Research, SKNAU, Jobner, presented the research highlights of the university. Dr B. Singh, Director, IIVR, addressed the seminar. About 250 delegates across the country participated in the group meeting. Total 12 sessions were held during the group meeting, in which important recommendations were listed, and seven open pollinated varieties, two hybrids, and two disease resistant varieties were identified.
Total 39 recommendations were given, which included 8 on vegetable production technology, 12 on vegetable seed-production technology, 4on disease management technology, 13 on pest management technology and 2 on protected-cultivation technologies. On this occasion various publications were releasedincluding Vegetable Research at a Glance, Sabjiyon ki Uchch Gunwata hetu Jaivik Kheti (in Hindi) and Poshan Vatika (in Hindi) of SKNAU, Jobner were released.

Reiterating Central Government’s resolve to double the income of farmers by 2022, Shri Narendra Modi listed that today five Ts (Training, Talent, Technology, Timely action and Trouble free approach) are most significant for bringing agriculture revolution in the country. Maintaining that the quality of human resources is a big challenge for developing technology-based and entrepreneurship-driven agriculture sector in the country, he exhorted the university security to set some targets such emerging as one of the top 100 universities in the world or increasing the yield per hectare agriculture to a certain level by 2022, the centenary year of Indian independence. “As you are entering into an open classroom from this campus, keep your student mindset alive and don’t kill the innovations. The degrees in your hand are not mere an academic certificate but hopes of the farmers, who have a lot of expectation from you,” he told the passing out students and exhorted them to take a pledge for contribution towards nation building. Earlier, Prof Pardeep K Sharma, VC highlighted the achievements and activities of the university. He presented the Vice-Chancellor’s report and also briefed about the new initiatives proposed for better education, especially for betterment of farming community. During the Convocation, Shri Modi presented 6 gold medals to the toppers; the Chancellor awarded 55 PhD degrees in Agriculture, Basic Sciences and Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry; 85 Masters degrees in Agriculture, Biotechnology and Agri Business Management; 77 Masters degrees in Veterinary Science; 12 Masters degrees in Basic Sciences; 124 Bachelor degrees in Agriculture and Biotechnology; 91 Bachelor degrees in Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences. The CM of J&K, Mrs Mehbooba Mufti presented 100 Certificates of Merit. Total 444 degrees were presented. The Gold Medals were awarded to Shri Yogesh, Kumari Gazal Gupta, Miss Gurpreise Kour, Shri Gavneet Sawhney, Miss Neena Kumari and Kumari Megha Sharma.

Workshop on Prospects of Horticulture Seed Industry

Inaugural Function
Padma Shri Dr Manmohan Attavar Memorial workshop on “Prospects of horticulture seed-industry” was organized at Udyanagiri campus, UHS, Bagalkot on 30 Apr. 2018. Dr D.L. Maheswar, Vice Chancellor, along with chief guests inaugurated the function by sowing the seeds in portray. Dr R.C. Jagadish welcomed the guests, seed enterpreneurs, scientists, seed growers and students to the function and brifed about the importance of seed indusrty. Dr V. Nachegowda gave introductory remarks highlighting imortance of good quality seeds. The guest of honor Dr G.V. Jagadish, IAHS, Bengaluru spoke about Dr Manmohan Attavar and his contribution in development of horticulture seed industry in the country. Dr Devaraj Achar, IAHS, Bengaluru briefed about the role of bio-technology in crop improvement and overall development of seed indusrty. Dr H. B Lingaiah, Director of Education, released the compendium, containing scientific information about all aspects of seed development and qaulity. In his presidential remarks, Dr D.L. Maheswar, expressed his gratttitude towards the IAHS founder Dr Manmohan Attavar, for his legendary contribution for the development of horticulture sector in the country.

Mango and Jackfruit Mela

A ‘Mango and jack: diversity exhibition and mela’ was organized by UHS, Bagalkot in collaboration with ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru during 28-29 May, 2018. Shri G.S. Goudar, Director, Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Ltd, inaugurated the exhibition. Those present on this occasion were: Dr V. Nachegowda, Director of Research; Dr Y.K. Kotikal, Director of Extension; Dr N. Basavaraja, Dean (PGS); Dr M.S. Kulkarni, Dean (Students Welfare); Dr H.B. Patil, Dean, COH, Bagalkot; and Dr D.R. Patil, ADRE, MHREC, Bagalkot. Around 120 varieties of mango and 16 varieties of jackfruit of indigenous and exotic types collected from different parts of the country were displayed for the benefit of farmers, scientists, students, officers of horticulture department and public.
 
 

IX Research Council Meeting

Research Council Meeting
The UHS, Bagalkot conducted the 9th Research Council meeting at Udyanagiri, UHS, Bagalkot on 11 June 2018, to review the progress of research for the year 2017-18 and to approve the action plan of research for 2018-19. The meeting was chaired by Dr D.L. Maheswar, and attended by members of Research Council. At the outset, Dr H.B. Lingaiah, Director of Research, welcomed the Vice Chancellor and Chairman of Research Council to the meeting. He also extended welcome to all the members of the 9th Research Council.
He suggested the scientists to popularize the technologies, viz., biological control, organic farming, integrated pest and disease management etc., and exotic crop such as dragon fruit, rambutan, durian, butter fruit etc.
Dr H.B. Lingaiah, Director of Research, presented the progress of research activities performed during 2017-18. He proposed seven varieties for release (chilli: SRS-2; chilli: GPM-120-S-1; chilli: hybrid-80; fenugreek: DFC - 21: Devi Methi 1; tamarind: ATS1; jackfruit: Maharaja and China aster - ACC-I); and seven varieties for adoption (turmeric: Suroma; fig: Bellary and Deanna; anthurium: Fire (Red Spathe), Moments (White Spathe) and Pistache (Green Spathe); gladiolus: Green Star Green, Magma Red, Liemocello yellow and Pink lady Peach; floribunda roses: Cherishma, Mirabel and Palm Dmore; vegetable pigeonpea: ICP 7035 and ICPL 87091); and potato: Kufri Pukhraj.

Varieties Released at Joint Agresco Meet

The 46th Joint Agresco Meet was held at Dr Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli during 24 - 26 May, 2018, three verities one each of kharif jowar, cotton and tamarind, were approved along with 4 innovative farm implements and 28 research recommendations pertaining to Entomology, Horticulture, Food technology, Home Science, Agricultural Engineering etc.

Bio-fortified kharif sorghum variety Parbhani Shakti (PVK-1009) recorded higher grain yield than PKV 809, PVK 801 and AKSV 181; and higher fodder yield than PVK 801. It has higher iron (42 mg) and zinc (25 mg/kg) contents and is moderately tolerant to grain mold, shoot fly and stem borer. The bio-fortified kharif sorghum variety Parbhani Shakti (PVK 1009) is recommended for its release in kharif sorghum growing areas of Maharashtra.

Desi cotton variety PA-740 recorded 21.41 and 19.30% higher seed-cotton yield than the checks PA 402 and PA 08, respectively. It had superior fiber properties with tolerance to sucking pests, bacterial blight, alternaria and grey mildew. This variety is recommended for medium soil of Marathwada region.

Tamarind : Shiwai

Tamarind: Shiwai
The genetype Shiwai has higher fruit length (20.43 cm), weight of pulp (494.07g), yield kg / plant (843.33) and TSS (41.6%), acidity (31.2%) and breadth of fruit (3.13 cm) compared with other well known genotypes. Hence, it was recommended for release for cultivation in Maharashtra state.

INSA Visiting Scientist Award: 2018-2019

Dr Subrota Hati was selected for INSA Visiting Scientist Award: 2018-2019, by Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi for conducting the research work on Characterization of bioactive peptides from fermented soy milk. Dr Hati is working in Food & Nutritional Biotechnology Division, National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute, Mohali, (Punjab), under the mentorship of Dr Kiran. The entire expenses will be borne by the INSA, New Delhi under INSA Visiting Scientist programme.

Dr S.B. Verulkar, Head, Department of Plant Molecular, Biology and Biotechnology, IGKV, Raipur, received the Plaque of Appreciation (STRASA award) for his role in the implementation of the IRRI – led Stress-tolerant rice for Africa and South Asia project, and his important involvement and leadership in the development and promotion of drought-tolerant rice varieties on 3 May 2018 at National Agricultural Science Complex, New Delhi. Lt. Amit Singh Memorial Award 2017-18 for best AICRP (VC) Coordinating Centre

Lt. Amit Singh Memorial Award 2017-18 for the best AICRP (VC) Co-ordinating Centre was conferred to Vegetable Research Station, JAU, Junagadh on 18 May, 2018. All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Vegetable Crops was started during the 4th five-year plan in 1970-71, to provide a national level platform for multi-location testing of the vegetable technologies developed by various research institutes and state agricultural universities, to identify region specific recommendations. The head quarter of the project is at Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi. Presently the AICRP (Vegetable Crops) is a network of 36 regular and 18 voluntary centres. The AICRP centres are located in different agro-climatic zones of the country. The centres in the network include the ICAR institutes, central institutes, state agricultural and traditional universities and a few other public and private research organizations.

Mr Pawandeep Singh and Mr Rupinder Singh, students of B. Tech. (Food Technology), Department of Food Science and Technology, Punjab Agricultural University, were honoured with the national award for his start up idea “Utilization of sugarcane juice in production of kheer”. Ms Divyansha and Ms Ashpreet Kaur from the Department of Apparel and Textile Science were also awarded with the same award for their start up idea.
The PAU students received the award during a national start-up summit organized by Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, on 1-2 June, 2018. Seventy participants from 22 universities participated in the summit, out of which total 10 prizes were announced and the PAU won two prizes.

Dr C. Balachandran
Dr C. Balachandran assumed the charge of Vice-Chancellor of TNVASU, Chennai on 9 Apr. 2018. He was born on 28 July1957 in Mannargudi town of Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. He graduated from Madras Veterinary College, Chennai in 1980 and obtained his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in the discipline of Veterinary Pathology in the same college during 1983 and 1993 respectively. He joined as Assistant Professor at the erstwhile Poultry Research and Development Centre, Namakkal, in 1980, and was promoted Associate Professor in 1988 and Professor in 1996. He also served as Registrar here during 2010 -13 and as Dean, Madras Veterinary College during 2015-17.
Dr Balachandran has published 400 scientific articles (73 international) with h-index of 18 and i-10 index 32. His areas of research interests are Avian pathology, Avian mycotoxicosis, experimental oncology, cancer biology and Indigenous medicinal effects. He is author of six books and two book chapters and he prepared 20 manuals. He guided 9 Ph.D. and 12 M.V.Sc. scholars. He was associated with organizing several international and national conferences, one ICAR summer school and about 50 trainings under ASCAD, IAMWARM, etc. He served as Editor, Kalnadai Kathir, Popular magazine in Tamil language of the university. He has 80 awards to his credit. He was awarded university gold medal for the best thesis in avian pathology. He is FAO, Fellow of IAVP, National Academy of Veterinary Sciences and Academy of Science for Animal Welfare and Chartered Membership (Founding Father) of Indian College of Veterinary Pathologists. Fellow in Avian Pathology, Life-Time Achievement Award of Indian Association of Veterinary Pathologists, Tamil Nadu State Scientist Award 2014.

Dr Ashok S. Dhawan joined as Vice-Chancellor of VNMKV, Parbhani on 1 June 2018. Born on 7 May 1957, he did Ph.D. in Agricultural Chemistry and Soil Science during 1984, with academic excellence from the IARI, New Delhi. He served in various capacities at VNMKV for several years, before joining this responsibility. He successfully guided 5 Ph.D. and 15 M.Sc. students in his career. He published more than 50 research papers in journals of national and international repute, and 15 book chapters. He served as Councillor at national level for Indian Society of Soil Science.
