4th Inter-Collegiate Youth Festival

The Directorate of Instruction, organized the 4th Inter Collegiate Youth Festival, CAU, 2017 at College of Agriculture, Iroisemba, (Imphal), during 15-17 Jan. 2018. Participants from 13 constituent colleges of the university located in the NEH states participated in this festival. Shri Karam Shyam Singh, Minister, Food and Civil Supply & Revenue, Government of Manipur; from the CAU, Imphal, Prof. M. Premjit Singh, VC; Prof. C.A. Srinivasamurthy, Director of Instruction, and Prof. R.K Saha, Director of Extension Education; as well as Prof. J.M Laishram, Dean, College of Agriculture, Iroisemba, respectively, graced the dais.

The CAU, Imphal participated in the 18th All India ICAR AGRIUNIFEST, 2018, at Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Tirupati, during 12 - 16 Feb. 2018. A team of 22 students (boys and girls) and two officials participated in the events of Dance, Theatre and Literary activities etc.

The team consisting of Mr Sourav Debnath (COF,CAU-I, Lembucherra) and Mr Nitin Hugar (CPGS, Barapani, Meghalaya) secured 2nd position in Quiz competition.

Farmers- to- farmers Training on Technology Transfer

The AAU, Anand; NCCSD, Gandhinagar; Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, the USA; ATMA jointly organized a training programme on “Farmers-to-Farmers (F2F) methods for Agriculture Extension Technology Transfer: Transferring improved practices from the model farm to beneficiary farm sites” at Anand. The function was chaired by Dr N.C. Patel, VC; Dr Brian G.Messe, International Agronomy Research Consultant, Messe Agronomics LLC, the USA; Dr Arun Patel, Director of Extension Education, AAU; and Dr R.N. Pandey, Prof. and Head, Department of Plant Pathology and Co-ordinator of the programme, Sixty progressive farmers of central Gujarat enrolled with ATMA project attended the training programme. Besides Dr Girishbhai Patel, Programme Co-ordinator, KVK, Devataj, Dr Maheshbhai Patel, Associate Extension Educationist, EEI; and Dr J. B. Patel, Associate Professor, Department of Extension Education, BACA, Anand, acted as moderator for translating Dr Brian’s lecture into Gujarati language. Dr Arun A. Patel, DEE, has welcomed the dignitaries, farmers and invited guests and gave a brief introduction about the training.
Dr Messe told that India is a fast growing economy in the developing countries and there are lot of possibilities for the growth of agriculture in India, which is possible only through the application of latest agronomic techniques of crop production. He further informed that the On Farm Trial technique for crop production and application of basic agronomic principles will help increasing the produce quality through higher productivity and production.
Dr N.C. Patel, VC, AAU, emphasized that this is an important programme that provides opportunity to interact with knowledgeable experts, and international consultants, for imparting expertise for better crop productivity. He exhorted that the Prime Minister, Government of India, is also emphasizing on doubling the income of farmers. He advised the farmers to visit the different departments and farms of the university for gathering latest technology of agriculture and allied sectors. He informed that the progressive farmers have harvested 85 kg of banana per plant by improved package of practices, and the farmers should be in the contact of progressive farmers to adopt this technology. Further, he advised the farmers to use facilities of mobile, whatsapp, SMS, e-Kishan portal, internet etc. to interact with scientists and gather the information of improved package of practices for higher productivity.

 

Meeting of AICRP on Nematodes

The XXth Biennial group meet ing of AICRP on Nematodes in Agriculture was organized jointly by AICRP (Nematodes), New Delhi and Anand Agricultural University, during 15-17 Feb. 2018.
Total 70 scientific personnel working at 14 co-operating centres and 9 voluntary centres of AICRP (Nematodes) participated in the meeting.
The inaugural function was attended by Dr P.P. Reddy, former Director of Indian Horticultural Research Society, Bangalore; and Dr D.J. Patel, former Dean, BACA, AAU. Dr H.R. Patel, Associate Director of Research, AAU, delivered welcome address. Dr R.K. Walia, Project Co-ordinator, made a presentation on AICRPhistory, background and salient achievements made during 2015- 17. Dr K.B. Kathiria, Director of Research, AAU, Anand, presided over the function. Lastly, Dr B.A. Patel, Prof. and Head, Department of Nematology, BACA, AAU proposed the vote of thanks. This was followed by the release of Compendium of Nematode Diseases of Crop Plants written by Dr R.K. Walia and Dr M.R. Khan. Publications (leaflets/folders) brought out by other centres were also distributed during the function.
After the inaugural session, all the Group leaders made critical appraisal of the research work of the co-operating centres and presented the results of research work of 2 years. In this session new technical programmes were formulated and finalized for the year 2018-20. On the last day of the meeting (17 Feb. 2018), field visits for participants were arranged by the organizer.

Thrissur, visited AAU BPDU and Bio-fertilizer plant as well as Food Business Incubation Centre on 28 Feb. 2018. Their plan is to establish 14 business incubators across the Kerala state. The team appreciated the wonderful achievements of AAU BPDU on commercialization, and impressed by facility created on Experiential Learning Unit-cum- Incubation Centre of Food Processing and Bio-Energy College.

Compost Spawn and Mushroom Production

The CCSHAU has adopted public-private partnership model in collaboration with private sector to ensure that its technology is disseminated far and wide. This university has set up a Compost Spawn and Mushroom Production Centre on its campus under PPP mode with Bajwa Mushroom Farm, Kurukshetra. Prof. K.P. Singh, VC, inaugurated the Centre on 24 Jan. 2018. This MoU was signed for increasing the production of mushroom in the state as well as to train the youth in mushroom production. Bajwa Mushrom Farm will also develop skills of entrepreneurs and farmers in mushroom production through vocational trainings.
 
Speaking on the occasion, Dr K.P. Singh said that this is the first time that a Centre with public private partnership has been established at the university. With the beginning of this centre not only the demand for mushroom spawn will be fulfilled in the country and abroad, but employment opportunities will also increase in the country. For farmers to get full benefit of their produce, Prof. Singh called upon the students to develop a business perspective, so that besides establishing their own companies and earning themselves, they may also provide employment to others.

NABARD-ABIC for Innovations & Skill Development

The Foundation Stone of NABARD Agricultre Business Incubation Centre was laid on 2 Feb. 2018 by Shri Depinder Singh Dhesi, (IAS), Chief Secretary, Government of Haryana, in the presence of Dr Harsh Kumar Bhanwala, Chairman, NABARD; and Prof. K.P. Singh, VC, CCSHAU. The NABARD Agric. Business Incubation Centre was established with focus on innovation, skill building and entrepreneur development in agriculture and allied sectors, through grant assistance of Rs 11,74,85,000 lakhs (Rupees eleven crores seventy four lakhs eighty five thousand only) from NABARD. The project will run for 4 years, and is planned to develop universityentrepreneur/ industry linkages, provide platform to entrepreneurs/ industries for Research and Development in process/ product development for improving the quality of their product, provide infrastructure and technical expertise to entrepreneurs in different areas of agriculture and allied disciplines, along with assistance in commercialization, as well as to incubate start ups or companies in establishing business, through consultancy, trainings, business advisory services and hand-holding to a level of stability and success.
A seminar on ‘Nurturing Business, Incubation and Entrepreneurial Approach in Agriculture’ was also organized to mark the occasion where Dr Harsh Kumar Bhanwala was the guest of honour and Prof. K.P. Singh, VC, CCSHAU presided over the seminar.
 

Focus on Improving Soil Health

On 14 Mar. 2018, the Fourth Rao Bahadur Dr Ram dhan Singh Memorial Lecture was organized at CCSHAU. Dr R.S. Paroda, former Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR, was the chief guest on the occasion. Prof. K.P. Singh, VC, presided over the function. Prof. Ratan Lal, Director, Carbon Management and Sequestration Centre, Ohio State University, Columbus, the USA, & President, International Union of Soil Sciences, was the lead speaker on the occasion; whereas Dr Vibha Ahuja, Chief General Manager, Biotech Consortium India Ltd, was the guest of honour.
In his address Prof. Ratan Lal expressed concern over the overexploitation of natural resources, which could prove disastrous in future. Farmers should adopt Zero tillage and also use micro-irrigation techniques. Dr Lal called upon the agricultural scientists to develop such crops that can give good yield even under adverse temperature conditions. In his speech, Dr R.S. Paroda said that the soils of Haryana and Punjab have been found deficient in organic matter. After the Green, white and Blue Revolutions, today’s need is Evergreen Revolution. He said that to double the farmers’ income there is need to reduce the input cost of farming.
Prof. K.P. Singh, VC, told that the university is working on zero wastegeneration Project, under which the waste will be recycled and used on the campus itself. Prof. Singh shared the happy news that the Department of Soils of the university is starting Prof. Ratan Lal Gold Medal for post graduate students. Speaking of the importance of mutual collaboration, Prof. Singh told that the university had signed 11 international MoUs to promote education and research over the last 1 year. Dr Vibha Ahuja, Chief General Manager, Biotech Consortium India Limited laid stress on collaboration among industry, research and development organizations, financial institutes Ltd, international organizations, and informed that BCIL is making concerted efforts in this direction.

 
In this programme, a State level workshop on Bio safety capacity building was also conducted, in which Dr K.C. Bansal, former director of NBPGR and Dr Vibha Ahuja expressed their views. On this occasion, Mr Suresh Kumar, Ph.D. scholar in the Department of GPB was awarded a fellowship from International Plant Nutrition Institute, worth $2000 by its Vice-President Dr Kaushik Majumdar. Dr R.S. Dalal, Secretary, Haryana Kisan Ayog, was also present on the occasion.

H.E. Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Himachal Pradesh, laid the foundation stone of Zero Budget Natural Farming centre and also inaugurated Animal Disease Investigation and Research Laboratory on 29 Jan. 2018. Those present on this occasion were Shri Jai Ram Thakur, Chief Minister; and other Ministers; Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial, VC; Dr Shri kant Baldi, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance & Agriculture), besides senior officers of the State Government, university staff and students. Later, His Excellency the Governor, Chief Minister, Agriculture Minister and Vice-Chancellor addressed the university community, State Government officers and others. H.E. Shri Devrat, spoke on the relevance and importance of Zero Budget Natural Farming, and exhorted the university scientists and students to take immediate steps on research and extension work on it. Shri J.R. Thakur, CM, also assured full support on the initiatives on ZBNF and all help to resolve some finance related problems of the university. Agriculture Minister and Dr Sarial, VC, also expressed their views on ZBNF.

32nd Convocation

Over 2, 632 students were awarded degree during 32nd Convocation of DPDKV, Akola on 5 Feb. 2018. Shri Pandurang Phundkar, State Agriculture Minister, presided over the convocation, whereas Dr Vijay Bhatkar, Chancellor of Nalanda University, was the chief guest of the programme.

Shri Umeshchandra Sarangi, former Chief Secretary (Agriculture), Dr V.M. Bhale, VC, DPDKV; and the Members of Executive Council were the guests of honour at the programme. Dr Vijay Bhatkar during his convocation address asserted that “there are 6.40 lakh villages in India where about 68% population of the country resides, to realise the dream of a developed nation, it is essential to develop villages independently”. Prizes were also given to meritorious students. The Best Teacher award, Best Research award, cash prizes, and medals were distributed by Pro-Chancellor Dr Phundkar and others. Dr Gurmit Singh Buttar was awarded gold medal for his national level research.

On the eve of 119th birth anniversary of Dr Panjabrao alias Bhausaheb Deshmukh, (the first Agriculture Minister of Independent India), a grand Agriculture Exhibition cum Farmers rally “Agrotech 2017”, was organized during 27 - 29 Dec. 2017.

Shri Pandurang Phundkar, Minister for Agriculture, inaugurated the Expo. The dignitaries who graced this occasion were Shri Ranjitji Patil, Minister for State, Home affairs; Shri Sanjayji Dhotre, Member of Parliament, Shri Randhir Sawarkar, MLA; Dr V.M. Bhale, VC; and Executive Members of the University, besides many others dignitaries. Mr Phundkar during his address, expressed that “Farmers should not depend only on traditional farming techniques but should also take advantage of modern technology to get good yield. The most popular yearly publication Krishisanvadini-2018 and other university publications along with TOT mobile App were also released by the dignitaries on this occasion.
 
 
More than 7 lakh farmers, rural youths, scientists, extension personnel and officers of various departments and NGOs from various parts of Maharashtra, M.P., C.G. and Gujarat witnessed the advances in agriculture and allied fields during these days. Various line departments, Agric. Research Stations, Krishi Vigyan Kendras of the university, Agricultural Implements/Machinery Manufacturers, Agro-processors, various state Government departments, NGOs, Self Help Groups etc. Exhibited these products through exhibition stalls.

Women Empowerment Mela

On the eve of World Women Day, the university successfully organized Women Empowerment Mela on 28 Mar. 2018. The women of the Vidharbha region who came up and became the sources of inspiration to other women in spite of obstacles and struggle and all sorts of difficulties were honoured on this day.

At this occasion Dr V.M. Bhale, VC, was in the chair, whereas Smt. Nandatai Jichkar, Mayor of Nagpur Municipal Corporation; and Smt. Mokshada Patil, District Superintendent of Police, Washim, were the chief guests on this occasion; and Dr Dilip Mankar, Director of Extension Education, was present for this programme. During the inaugural session, Dr V.M. Bhale, VC, and other dignitaries delivered inspired speeches. The Dignitaries felicitated 14 women who contributed in Agriculture and allied fields, as well as 830 women who participated in mela.

Nursery Men Association to control its spread by creating wide publicity on the control measures. The natural predator Encarsia guadelopae was also released, who found good establishment of the predator. About 10 awareness programmes and training were conducted by the scientists of Research Stations and KVKs to give wide publicity of control measures, i.e. spraying neem oil @ 5 ml/litre mixed with 10 g detergent powder against the white fly. Spray of starch solution was also recommended @ 10g/litre if sooty mould is observed.

An exhibition stall was arranged of Dr. Y.S.R Horticultural University. Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE, & DG, ICAR, New Delhi; and Dr A.K. Singh, Deputy Director General (Agric. Ext.), visited the stall and interacted with the scientists.

Shri. N. Chandrababu Naidu garu, Chief-Minister of Andhra Pradesh, released ‘Udyana Panchangam 2018-19’, published by DY SRHU, with improved package of practices for all horticultural crops in Telugu, on 18 March, 2018. Those present on the occasion were Ministers, Peoples representatives, Shri. Chiranjiv Choudhary, VC, as well as university officers during Ugadi celebrations at Vijayawada.
The university in collaboration with M/s Dabur India Ltd, sponsored by National Bee Board, Government of India, organized a national seminar on ‘Awareness, motivation and technology transfer for development of scientific bee-keeping in the country’ during 24-25 Mar. 2018 at Vijayarai. Shri. Chiranjiv Choudhary, VC, addressed about the importance of bee-keeping in various crops in increasing the productivity.

GURU ANGAD DEV VETERINARY AND ANIMAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY, LUDHIANA

The GADVASU organized its 24th Pashu Palan Mela on 23 Mar. 2018. H.E. Shri V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab, inaugurated the mela. He insisted on the development and conservation of indigenous animal breeds of our land. He appreciated that this university is working on these lines. Dr Amarjit Singh Nanda, VC, said that diversification within the livestock is need of the hour. He said that we are making serious efforts to explore the new avenues in livestock. Value addition of products also provides add on profit in comparison with conventional livestock professions. The Chief Minister’s Award was given to seven livestock farmers of the state in the Mela. To motivate various categories of livestock farmers, the university organizes innovative competitions by assessing the extent and impact of adoption of these technologies in improving the productivity and profitability of different livestock farming systems.
 

International Training on Advanced Surgical Skills

GADVASU created a platform together with Small Animal Clinicians’ Association, Chandigarh for “Hands on training in advanced surgical skill sin animals”. The Department of Surgery and Radiology, hosted the international training. Renowned small animal surgeons Dr Bryden Stanley and Dr Simon Petersen- Jones from College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, gave live demonstrations and hands on training to the participants on certain advanced procedures like Total Ear Canal Ablation, Perineal Hernia Repair and Reconstructive Surgery. A separate session dedicated to phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation for surgical management of cataract in two dog patients was also organized. The training was attended by 70 practising veterinarians from all over the country, including the faculty members and students of the host institute.

A team of delegates from University of Guelph, Canada, comprising Shri Jeffrey Wichtel, Dean Ontario Veterinary College, Canada, an expert in the field of preventive medicine; along with experts of Public Health, Shri Maureen Wichtel, an expert of reproduction science, Shri Pavneesh Madan visited their university for exploring the areas for possible collaborative research between the two universities. Dr Amarjit Singh Nanda, VC, revealed that there is immense scope for future collaborative research, particularly in the area of improvement in buffalo and pig reproduction; reduction in the age of puberty and calving interval, and research on various markers of production and disease resistance for improving the socio-economic status of the farmers. He informed that GADVASU is already pursuing a student and scientist exchange programme with University of Saskatchewan, Canada and University of Sydney, Australia and wished to start a similar programme with the University of Guelph.

A delegation from University of Tasmania, Australia and Australia Education and Career Consultants, Global, visited College of Fisheries to have an interactive meet with the B.F.Sc final year students, regarding career opportunities in fisheries at University of Tasmania. Mr Nitin Sharma, Country Representative for South Asia, apprised the students about the details, eligibility and admission to various courses in fisheries in that university. He also explained about the post-graduate courses in Marine and Antarctic sciences, offered by the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies, for fisheries graduate with scholarship (on the merit basis) and permission for part time job of maximum 4 hr a day to meet the living expenses during their study period.

A delegation from Denmark comprising Mr Brian Bodholdt, Director Go2Know International, and Ms Ishita Sharma, World Bank funded Researcher, Aalborg University, visited the university to explore the possibilities for tie-ups between Indian and Danish universities working in the field of Dairying and Agriculture. During discussion Mr. Brian indicated that India being the world’s largest milk producer, and Denmark being a country of Milk and Butter, the opportunities seem endless for educational and cultural exchange as well for business cooperation between the two nations.

Inclusion of Pantvarsity among top Asian universities

Pantvarsity was placed amongst top 350 educational institutions of Asia in ‘Times Higher Education Asia University Ranking 2018’. This information was received from a tweet of Central Minister of Human Resource Development, Shri Prakash Javdekar. There are only two agricultural universities of India among this ranking, the other being TamilNadu Agricultural University. In this ranking the universities were judged on the basis of all their core missions viz. teaching, research and knowledge transfer as well as international outlook, besides industry income and citations.
 

High Iron Content Wheat

Pantvarsity scientists have been successful in developing a new technology of growing high-iron wheat to control a blood-deficiency disease, anaemia, affecting a large part of Indian population. Based on nano-intervention, this simple technology has been developed under biotechnology programme undergoing in College of Basic Sciences and Humanities of the university. Named iron-biofortification technology, it can increase the iron content in wheat grain up to 45% which may prove an important step in controlling anaemia. In this technology the wheat seeds are soaked overnight in a solution of iron-nano particles right before sowing into the soil, which activates the iron uptake machinery in the seeds and triggers higher acquisition of iron for the soil, which in turn gets accumulated in the harvested wheat grains. The scientists were doing research from many years on controlling anaemia, which led to the development of this technology. In the next phase, the trials will be conducted on farmers’ fields on large scale. The patent of the technology has already been filed. The university has also been honoured with Mahindra Samridhi Agri Awards 2018 for development of this technology.

One healthy calf was born at Instructional Dairy Farm of the university on 2 Mar. 2018 through Embryo Transfer Technology under ‘Multiplication of elite germplasm in cattle through embryo transfer technology’ project. Excellent quality of embryo produced from the donor cow was transplanted in surrogate mother on 13 May 2017, which has now delivered a healthy calf. Progeny’s expected yield capacity would be about 8,446 litres of milk per lactation on becoming adult. Presently, the work on Sahiwal cattle is in progress for improving high pedigreed most promising Sahiwal cattle through embryo transfer technology. Thus, the elite animal production through ETT would continue in 2018.

 
Two healthy high pedigreed calves were born on 26 Jan. 2018 at Instructional Dairy Farm, Nagla of the university through embryo transfer technology. Embryo donor cow brand no. 347 was used as embryo donor animal, which had 18 litres of peak yield per day. The cow was super ovulated by injecting exogenous hormones and bred with high pedigreed bull semen having 13,849 liters milk producing capacity of Sire’s Dam’s yield per lactation. Two excellent quality of embryos produced from the donor cow were transplanted in surrogate mother AP-220 on 2 May 2017 which delivered two healthy calves on 26 Jan. 2018. The Progeny’s expected yield capacity would be about 8,530 litres of milk per lactation when they will become adult and the producing animals’ of tomorrow. There would be significant improvement in the quality of animals. Further, another surrogate mother AP-665 is expected to deliver healthy calf during the second week of February, 2018. Presently, the work on Sahiwal cattle is in progress and six Sahiwal embryos have already been transferred in surrogate mothers in January 2018.

Thirteenth Annual Convocation of JAU was held on 28 Jan 2018, presided over by H.E. Shri O. P. Kohli, Governor of Gujarat and Chancellor of JAU, Junagadh. Dr A.R. Pathak, VC, welcomed the dignitaries and addressed in brief the achievements of the university. Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) and DG, ICAR, Government of India, New Delhi, the chief guest of the convocation, delivered the convocation address. Shri R. C. Faldu, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Transport, Government of Gujarat, the guest of honour, also addressed the august gathering. Total 604 students, including 381 graduates and 223 post-graduates from various faculties, were conferred degrees by H.E. Shri O. P. Kohli. He also awarded 56 medals, including 3 Chancellor’s Gold Medals, 4 Vice Chancellor’s Gold Medals, 1 Donor’s Gold Medal, 48 Donor’s Gold Pated Silver Medals, and two cash prizes to the outstanding and meritorious students. It gives 25-30% more yield compared with traditional Chinnor. It is adapted Balaghat, Seoni districts of M.P.
 

Improved Jeera-Shankar

Improved Jeera
It was developed with all characters of traditional jeera-shankar. It is useful in biodiversity conservation and availability of quality seed material. It fetches price due to its improved characteristics, resulting in higher income. It has better yield potential (25-30%) than the traditional jeera-‘shankar’. It matures in 140-145 days, with average yield of 30-32 q/ha. This improved variety is well adapted for Seoni, Mandla, Dindori, Anooppur Umaria, Shahdol and Katni districts (M.P.).

It takes 97 days for maturity, with yield potential of 6q/ha, having 123 cm plant height. It can be grown from mid-July to September end. It is found restraint to Cercospora and Alternaria leaf spot in field condition.

Jawahar Gram 36 is a high yielding variety of desi chickpea (18-22 q/ha) with wider adaptability. It has semi-spreading growth habit, medium plant height and profuse branching. Its seeds are brown, medium in size and attractive. It is resistant to Fusarium wilt, moderately resistant to dry root rot and stunt. This variety is recommended for rainfed as well as irrigated areas.

Maturity 1-14 months, no disease incidence reported in Madhya Pradesh. Suitable for autumn; sole and inter cropping, non lodging, seed rate 100 q/ha. Average yield potential 113. 45 tonnes/ha under normal conditions.

Achievements of Students

Nineteen students were selected in different IIT and NIT in the county through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). Mr Harsh Nagar, Shri Ashish Sachan, Shri Anshul Shrivastava Deepesh Jain, Shri Vijay Mahore, Shri Prakhar Patidar, Shri Siddharth Vishwakarma, Shri Ankush Koshta secured All India Ranking (AIR) 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 16th and 19th respectively. Eleven students were under 150 All India Ranking.

The Fourth Convocation of Kamdhenu University was held on 3 Feb, 2018 at GMERS Medical College Auditorium, Gandhinagar. H.E. Shri O. P. Kohli, Chancel lor of the University and Governor of Gujarat, presided over the convocation. Dr P.H. Vataliya, VC, welcomed the dignitaries, guests, invitees and students. Prof. A.K. Misra, VC, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, was the chief guest who deliver the convocation address. Shri Jaydrathsinh Parmar, Minister of State (Agriculture, Panchayat and Environment), the guest of honor, congratulated the students and gave valuable suggestions to apply their expertise for the benefit of the society, state and country.
Shri O P. Kohli in his presidential address stated that Kamdhenu University is playing crucial role in the field of productivity improvement by providing support through development of highly knowledgeable and trained manpower. He also opined that it has become necessary to create more employment opportunities in rural areas, and for this purpose livestock and allied sectors should be given appropriate weightage.
During the Convocation, 7 students of Post-graduate, 65 students of B.Tech degree and 75 students of Diploma in Animal Husbandry were awarded degree and diploma. Four Gold medals and 4 Gold plated silver medals were awarded to the students.
Third annual report (2016-17) of Kamdhenu University was also released by H.E. Shri O. P. Kohli. Dr R.R. Shah, Registrar, Kamdhenu University, proposed the vote of thanks.

The first Fisheries University of the country, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, conducted its fourth convocation on 19 Feb. 2018, awarding degrees to 276 students in various subjects related to fisheries and ocean sciences.

Dr N.S. Rathore, Deputy Director General (Education), ICAR while delivering the convocation address, urge the fisheries graduates to explore the possibility of initiating entrepreneurship in fisheries and become job providers rather than job seekers.
Dr A. Ramachandran, VC, conferred degrees to the 276 successful students, who had successfully completed their Under-graduate and Post-graduate courses in the 2016-2017 academic year in difference disciplines. Forty-nine of the awardees were from bachelor degrees in Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc). KUFOS is providing 20 per cent seats supernumerary to all the courses for children from fisherman community of the State with specific aim to bring them to the mainstream of higher education. Governing Council member Adv. A.N. Shamseer, MLA and Senate Member Adv. M. Swaraj MLA delivered special addresses at the convocation, which was attended by the faculty members, students, their relatives and other invited guests.

The Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur, in collaboration with Pets Practitioners Association of Mumbai organized a Workshop on ‘Emergency applications in Critical Care Management’ for the benefit of the students at the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, Nagpur on 18 Mar 2018. Total 32 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students and final students participated in the workshop. Dr Erica Steppat, Teacher, Animal Science, Ultimo College, TAFE-Sydney institute, Sydney, (Australia) and other members of Pets Practitioners Association demonstrated various procedures; and hands-on training was given on various aspects of critical care such as endotracheal intubation, catheterization, monitoring of vital parameters during surgery and anaesthesia, Doppler studies and ultrasound etc.

PAU Bt 1 (American Cotton)

PAU Bt 1
It is the first Bt cotton variety developed by the PAU in public sector of the country. Its average seed cotton yield is 11.2 q/acre. It possesses in-built resistance against American, spotted and pink bollworms. It is moderately resistant to cotton leaf curl disease and has bigger bolls (4.3 g), with ginning outturn of 41.4 %. It possesses superior fibre properties, with 28.2 mm span length, 28.6 g/tex strength and 4.5 micronaire (fineness) value.

LD 1019 (Desi Cotton)

LD 1019
This is a shattering tolerant variety of desi cotton requiring two or three pickings compared with at least five pickings required by other desi cotton varieties. Its average seed cotton yield is 8.6 q/acre. It possesses ginning outturn of 35.7% and its fibre length is 22.6 mm. It is tolerant to jassid, whitefly, Fusarium wilt and bacterial blight.

PR 127 (Rice)

A new variety with average paddy yield of 30.0 q/acre released recently matures in about 137 days after seeding. It possesses long, slender, clear, translucent grains with high total and head rice recoveries.

PMH 11 (Maize)

The average yield of this variety is 21q/acre. It matures in about 95 days. It has long ears with orange flint grains. The plants remain stay green at maturity.

AL 882 (Arhar)

Its average grain yield is 540 kg/acre. It is a short-statured (160 to 180 cm) and early maturing variety, with semi-determinate growth habit. It matures in about 132 days.

During the Congress a “Children’s Science Congress” was also held on 8 Feb., in which 165 students of 10th to 12th class from 32 schools participated in different events (Poster making, Slogan writing, Science model and Science questions).
 

Field Day on Machinery for Straw Management

The PAU organized a field day on “In-situ paddy straw management as mulch in ricewheat” in the village Talwandi Kalan, (near Mullanpur), on 21 Mar. 2018, under the project ‘Mass awareness campaign to halt paddy straw burningin Punjab’. The project is operational in the Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, at Ludhiana and is funded by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chandigarh. About 300 farmers and 30-40 secretaries of cooperative societies in Ludhiana district participated in this programme.
The experts from PAU urged the farmers to adopt PAU Happy Seeder for effective in-situ management of paddy residue. They informed that wheat sowing with this machine is quite economical, eco-friendly and effective in curbing weed infestation.

Solar Energy

The university has entered into an agreement with M/s Azure Power Pvt. Ltd for installation of 1 Megawatt roof-top solar power plant under the net metering system. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed between PAU and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on 22 Feb. 2018.
The system allows the excess solar power to be fed back into the electricity grid, which can be used later. The project, which will be completed by June, falls under the RESCO model approved by the Government of India. It has been sanctioned by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, New Delhi, through SECI, New Delhi. It will use Solar photovoltaic cell for the production of electricity.
Besides, it is the green technology that will help in developing an environment friendly campus, by reducing the university’s carbon dioxide emission by 1460 tonnes per year, and will help decrease the overall carbon footprint.

International Training for Afghan Nationals

An international training on “Cropprotection chemicals for food security, safety and their residue management” was organized at the university, under the aegis of Environmental and Culture Society, Hisar during 9-18 Apr. 2018. The Department of Entomology, organized the course for 10 Extension officials from Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Kabul (Afghanistan). The Afghan nationals were imparted training on crop protection chemicals, their chemistry, toxicity, mode of action, resistance, resurgence and residue management for food security and safety. The trainees were made aware about the adverse effects of the pesticides and the need for developing environmentally safe and selective pesticides, which are compatible with other tactics of integrated pest management.

4.    The Reduction in dependency on agriculture by farmers.
5.    Veterinary laboratories should be accredited throughout India.
6.    Emerging technologies like biotechnology, bioinformatics and nanotechnology should be followed to augment the growth and production of animals for doubling the income of farmers.
7.    Not only RBPT or STAT, 2-3 tests should be applied to animal for confirmatory diagnosis of brucellosis in farms.
8.    Faculty members of universities/institutions should be sent for training to equip themselves in the areas of genomics, CRISPAR associated system, synthetic biology, metagenomics, bioinformatics
9.    Data from industry and other sources should be made available to FSSAI on AMR/ MRLs to help FSSAI in developing standards.
10.    Establishment of Indian Council of Veterinary Research should be pursued.
11.    IAAVR should explore of possibility for linkages with line departments, veterinary universities, NGO’s and foreign organizations.
12.    The IAAVR should explore the possibility of a task force on AMR in animals with INFAH and other scientists in the country. Prof. Purnendu Biswas, VC, WBUFAS, KolKata declared to host the Congress in February 2019.

Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, established in 2012 was renamed Tamil Nadu Dr J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University in 2018.
The Fourth convocation of this university was held on 1 Mar. 2018 at Institute of Fisheries Postgraduate Studies, Vaniyanchavadi, Chennai in the presence of H.E. Shri. Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of Tamil Nadu & the Chancellor of the University,. Shri. D. Jayakumar, Minister for Fisheries and Pro-Chancellor of this university, delivered special address. Dr S. Felix, VC, welcomed the gathering and presented the report of the university. The chief guest of the day, Dr Narendra Singh Rathore, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Education), ICAR, New Delhi, delivered convocation address. Total 72 graduates were conferred degrees which include one Ph.D., 30 Post graduate (M.F.Sc.) and 41Undergraduate (B.F.Sc.) degrees. Dr A. Srinivasan, Registrar in-charge, declared the medal winners for academic excellence. Total 25 medals were awarded for academic excellence. A girl student, Miss M. Muthu Abishag, received 10 Gold medals for academic achievements in B.F.Sc. degree programme.

Prof. Ravi Fotedar, Curtin University, Australia visited FCRI, Ponneri on 12 Jan. 2018. He visited the facilities of the institute and gave a guest lecture on “Aquaculture in Australia: industry, research and education” benefitting the students and faculty members. Prof. S. Felix, VC, felicitated him and briefed the staff and students, on the association of TNFU and Curtin University, Australia.

The function was organized to award Breed Registration to the stackholders/applicants for the newly recognised and registered breeds of livestock during the year. Anand Agricultural University, Sahjeevan Trust and Ram Rahim Kachchhi-Sindhi Ashwapalak Sahkari Mandali Ltd jointly characterized Kachchhi-Sindhi horse breed, and now Kachchhi- Sindhi horse breed is recognized as a 7th equine breed. Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial, VC, was honoured with the Best Teacher Award at CCS Haryana Agricultural University. The award, consisting of Rs 10,000, a trophy and a citation was awarded to him by Prof K.P. Singh, Vice-Chancellor, HAU in an impressive ceremony. Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial, while serving as Professor (Genetics & Plant Breeding) at HAU before his selection as VC in August 2016, made significant contributions in teaching and research and motivated his students to opt for plant breeding. As a result nine of the 17 gold medals of Agriculture College, Kaul, (where he served) were bagged by his students.

Saini chaired the different Scientific Sessions in the Conference. The Conference was attended by more than 200 delegates from different parts of the country. Out of 3 Young Scientist Awards of the Society, two were bagged by students of GADVASU. Dr Pallavi Bhardwaj and Dr Rashmi Sagar, Ph.D. students of Pharmacology and Toxicology, were awarded Dr R Natarajan and Dr J.V. The UAS, Raichur has bagged the prestigious World Summit on Information Society Champion Award for the year 2018, for designing and developing eSAP (electronic Solutions against Agricultural Pests), an ICT application for crop-health management. The eSAP was the only ICT application from India considered for the honour. The Award was presented by Mr Houlin Zhao, Secretary General of International Telecommunication Union in Geneva, Switzerland on 20 Mar. 2018, which included the citation from WSIS forum. Dr I. JRF Award

During 2016- 17, the B.Sc. (Horticulture) graduates of University bagged maximum 10 JRFs out of 22 in the 22nd AIEEA-PG 2016, conducted by the ICAR. It ranked first place in the Horticulture & Forestry category from the ICAR, New Delhi. Shri. Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, GoI, presented the award to University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot during the Annual Vice Chancellors Conference of the Agricultural Universities and Interface meeting with ICAR Institute Directors, held durng 14-15 Feb. 2017 at New Delhi.

Prof. Pradeep Kumar Bisen joins as VC

Prof. Pradeep Kumar Bisen
Dr Pradeep Kumar Bisen joined as Vice Chancellor, JNKVV on 23 Nov. 2017. Born in Landijhiri village, (district Balaghat), Dr Bisen did Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics in 1986 from JNKVV, Jabalpur. For more than 2 decades, he was closely associated, as Dean, Student Welfare, with student activities, propelling for excellence in agricultural education. He conceptualized several innovative programmes for students, involving the applied research, especially for rice, soybean and chickpea. With active collaboration and directions, he introduced hybrid technology of rice, and thereafter seed production of parental lines of rice in remote regions of tribal belts that resulted in a dramatic improvement in the socio-economic status of rice-growing farmers. Serving as Director, Extension Services, he demonstrated several viable technologies among farmers, which triggered the productivity of crops. He is considered as one of the key persons in transforming the Agriculture as a profitable venture, through blending of research accomplishments with the fields of farmers. Now Madhya Pradesh is credited for highest agricultural growth rate and was awarded five times the prestigious Krishi Karman Award, which is the cumulative result of effective transmission of technology.

Prof. A.M. Paturkar joins as a VC

Prof. A.M. Paturkar
Prof. Ashish Motiram Paturkar, Associate Dean, Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai has taken over as Vice-Chancellor of MAFSU, Nagpur from 22 Jan. 2018.
Born on 22 June, 1962 in Maharashtra, is graduated in Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry from Nagpur Veterinary College, and obtained masters and doctoral degrees in Veterinary Public Health from Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai. He worked as Professor and Head of the Department of Veterinary Public Health, Bombay Veterinary College Mumbai for many years and Associate Dean of Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai from June 2011 to January 2018.
He has 57 research articles to his credit. He guided 33 M.V.Sc. and 5 Ph.D. students for research of their degree programme and handled 29 research projects funded by national and international agencies. He established state of the art NABL accreditated ‘Western Region Referral Laboratory for Meat and Meat Products Quality Standards Control’ at Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai under National Agricultural Technology Project of the ICAR, New Delhi.
He has worked with Cornell University, the USA, Indo-US SPS meet, Washington DC, the USA, and six different International bodies. He worked as President of Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists and BVC Alumni Association, Mumbai and Chairman of Advisory Council, CPCSEA, Bio-safety, Radio-safety, IAEC committees of Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai.
He has published 11 books, 3 international compendiums, 8 booklets and has 3 patents in his name. He has developed more than 7 technologies for the benefit of farmers and entrepreneurs and has done many extension education-activities. He is a Life Member of seven professional associations. He has been honoured with 16 awards and honours of national and international repute.

Dr M.K. Naik joins as a Vice- Chancellor

Dr M.K. Naik
Dr M. K. Naik born on 1 July, 1961 at Konalli village, Kumta (Taluka), Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, had a brilliant academic record throughout his career. He was seconded to ICRISAT by the ICAR for Post-Doctoral Fellowship and worked on Pigeonpea wilt Pathology. He served as ICAR Scientist for 7 years and thereafter joined at UAS, Dharwad and Raichur, served in various capacities, viz. Associate Professor, Professor & Head, University Head and Dean of PG studies. He served as Fulbright Professor at NDSU, the USA for a semester. With an experience of over 28 years in the ICAR, ICRISAT and SAUs, operated 22 externally funded projects for Rs 460 lakhs sponsored by the CGIAR, BAARC, DBT, ICAR, NHM, etc., on PGPR, Biological Control, Soil borne Pathogens, Bio-diversity of Fungi, Aflatoxin contamination, Food safety and IPM/IDM.
Dr Naik is a recipient of several national and international awards and recognitions such as ICAR Bharat Ratna Subramnyam Outstanding Teacher Award, by the ICAR, National Young Scientist Award of ISCA, Kolkata. Karnataka State Young Scientist Award, Fulbright Visiting Fellowship by the USA and Indian Government, Certificate of Achievement at ICRISAT for PD, University Best Teacher Award by the UAS, Raichur, Prof. V.P. Bhide Memorial Award by the ISMPP, Udaipur Rajasthan; Dr A.K. Sarbhoy Memorial Award by IPS, IARI for outstanding contribution in Agriculture in general and Plant Pathology in particular, and elected as Fellow of six professional societies, Fellow National Academy of Biological Sciences, Chennai; Indian Phytopathological Society IARI; Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology, Udaipur, (Rajasthan); Plant Protection Association of India, Hyderabad, United Writers Association, Chennai; and Honorary Fellow Indian Mycological Society, Kolkata.
Published more than 190 research papers, 52 books chapters and 11 book with two patents filed to his credit. He joined as Vice-Chancellor, UAHS, Shivamogga, (Karnataka) on 31 Mar. 2018.
