Regional Agric-Fair 2017-18

College of Fisheries, Agartala
The CAU, Imphal organized 3 day Regional Agric-Fair, 2017-18 (5-7 Nov. 2017) at College of Fisheries, Agartala, (Tripura). The theme of the Fair was "Integrated Farming for Doubling of Farm Income". Shri Shankar Prasad Datta, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, Tripura West, graced the function as Chief Guest and emphasised on the country's potential in terms of its resources and pointed out the need for mending the gap between indigenous knowledge and the modern technological tools. Padma Bhushan, Dr R. B. Singh, the Chancellor of CAU, Imphal, congratulated the university in achieving new heights through its performance in academics, research and extension as one of the best agricultural universities in the country. Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the university, Imphal, pointed that the north-east region with acidic soil, irrigation problems and small land- holding can rely much on integrated farming system to sustain the sector in long term, and cited the examples of the successful entrepreneurs.

The Fair was attended by large numbers of farmers (4397 in number) across the north-eastern states, and officials from various related Agriculture & allied line departments, academic and research institutes, KVKs, banking sectors, private companies, NGOs/SHGs and agripreneuers. Var ious governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as entrepreneurs showcased their farmer-friendly technologies, success stories, innovative ideas and products in 42 exhibition stalls. The fair was unique as it has addressed the role of women in agriculture, and farmer-scientist interaction session. Some of the striking queries included regional suitability of fish species and livestock breeds, fish-disease outbreak, utilization of green-manure crops in integrated farming, problem of bird flu, de-worming in pigs and cattle, about agri- entrepreneurship, poultry farming, and training needs etc. Prior to the inauguration of thie Agri Fair, Shri Shankar Prasad Datta, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, Tripura West, inaugurated the newly constructed building of Postgraduate Girls' Hostel of College of Fisheries, Central

Speaking on the closing day, Shri Aghore Debbarma, Minister of Agriculture, Tribal Welfare and AnimalResource Development, Government of Tripura and Chief Guest of the Function mentioned the need for convergence of government approach, scientific contribution and interest of farmers and need for farmer-friendly policies on agriculture inputs.

Potential of Zebra Fish

Zebra fish model
Zebra fish is a genetic model organism used for research in developmental biology and cancer. At ICAR-CIFE inbred lines of this species have been developed, which would serve as immense potential research material in the fields of toxicology, nutri-genomics, immunogenicity and cancer research. A laboratory has also been developed to serve as a national facility for zebra fish research parallel to internationally renowned laboratories like ZIRC, the USA; EZRC, Europe and CZRC, China.

The dignitaries on the dais also released the 'Souvenir' and 'Abstracts' and two books on biological control. Guest of Honour Dr C.D. Mayee, Former Chairman ASRB; and Chief Guest of the function Dr Y.L. Nene, Former DDG, ICRISAT, Hyderabad, Emeritus Chairman, AAHF, Hyderabad also addressed the symposium. Dr N.C. Seminar on Raw Milk Quality

Indian Dairy Association (Gujarat Chapter) and SMC College of Dairy Science organized a seminar on "Raw milk quality" on 17 Nov. 2017. As the hygiene is very important in producing milk and milk products that are safe and standard for intended use, the seminar was aimed towards improving the quality of milk at the time of procurement ensuring best quality of milk moving through the production chain. A total of 361 registered delegates, viz., officers from co-operative
 
unions, private dairies, academicians, and students, apart from SEC members, attended the seminar.

On 31 October, the birth anniversary of SardarVal labhbhai Patel was celebrated across the country as a "National Unity Day" and observed "Run for unity" from University Bhavan to College of Veterinary Sciences. All the university officers, unit / subunit heads of Anand Campus, College/Polytechnic teachers, employees and students participated in the programme. On this occasion, Dr N.C. Patel, VC and university Officers gave a floral tribute on Sardar Patel's statue and Dr Patel delivered an inspiring speech about the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and his services to the nation, especially to Gujarat State.

49th Conference of Nutrition Society of India

The Conference was organized at AAU, Jorhat by Nutrition Society of India, Jorhat chapter at Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Faculty of Community Science during 2 - 4 Nov. 2017. The conference was aimed at nurturing biodiversity, traditional knowledge (TK) and wellness as a way of life and at elucidating TK in the context to indigenous food, plants and other species as robust and thriving sources of alternative health-care practice. The Chief Guest, Shri Ram Muivah, IAS, Secretary, NEC

 
inaugurated the conference along with the Dr K.M. Bujarbaruah, VC. The conference organized two symposia- one on "Biodiversity and traditional food system in ensuring food security"; and another on "Nutraceuticals, functional foods in promoting health". The conference also had oral and poster presentations; Debate sessionon "Mandating food fortification : Beneficial or not"; Industry session as well as Junior and Senior Young Scientists' Award Session, st th wherein it included 41 Dr Gopalan Oration Award, 29 Dr Srikantial th th Memorial Award, 8 Dr Rajammal P. Devdas Memorial Award, 4 Prof. B.K. Anand Memorial Award and Young Scientist Award. The Plenary lecture was delivered by Dr Anura Krupad, Prof. & Head, Division of Nutrition, St. Johns Research Institute, Bengaluru, on "Challenges in feeding a Nation".

KVK, Jorhat, organized World Soil Day on 5 Dec. 2017. In his address Shri Atul Bora, State Agriculture Minister, Chief Guest of the function, said that new agriculture policy for Assam would be adopted soon. He also expressed his concern about the depleting soil-health condition due to irrational use of agricultural chemicals, and about the importance of issuing soil-health cards to the farmers. Shri Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MP Jorhat; Ms Renupama Rajkhowa, MLA, Teok LAC and Shri Palit Bora, Chairman, Assam State Agricultural Marketing Board also spoke on the occasion as guests of honour. Dr K. M. Bujarbaruah, VC, in his speech, appealed to the farmers and students to give due importance on providing proper nutrition to the soil, as is done for a pregnant mother.
 

Training to Bangladesh Students at CVSc, Khanapara

The first batch of 28 students from Sher - e - Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, (Bangladesh) visited College of Veter inar y Sc ience, Khanapara during 2-16 Dec. 2017 for a 15-day internship training at the Veterinary Clinical Complex. Their visit was as per the recent MoU between the two universities for bilateral collaboration and student exchange. During the training, the students received exposure to the Medicine, Surgery and Gynaecology OPDs and also to the diagnostic units of the complex. Endoscopy, Ultrasonography, X-ray imaging, as well as various microbiological laboratory procedures were also demonstrated.
 

Patent Licensing Agreement

The AAU officially signed a patent-licensing agreement on 29 Nov. 2017 to transfer one of its technologies to Herbal Medicinal Research Centre, Jorhat, (Assam) under the initiatives of IPR Cell, AAU, Jorhat. Dr Chandana Choudhury Barua, Dr Apurba Chakrabarty, Dr Rajib Sharma, Dr Animesh Deka, Dr Seema Pegu and Dr Iswar Chandra Barua developed and patented the technology: "A polyherbal composition for wound healing and a process for its production" vide Patent no. 270519, dated 29 Dec. 2015. On behalf of AAU Dr G. N. Hazarika, Director of Research (Agric.); and from Herbal Medicinal Research Centre, Mr K. K. Nath, Secretary, signed the agreement.
 
This agreement embodies the commitment for production and commercialization of this herbal wound-healing product for animals on mutually agreed terms and conditions.
 

Visit of Netherlands Ambassador

His Excellency, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to India, Nepal and Bhutan, Mr Alphonsus Stoelinga, and eleven other members of an Economic Mission of the country visited Col lege of Veter inar y Science, Khanapara on 12 Dec. 2017. They had a discussion with Dr K.M. Bujarbaruah, VC about possible research collaboration and scholar exchange between AAU and the leading universities of the Netherlands. During the discussion, Dr Bujarbaruah highlighted the possible areas of collaboration in the field of agriculture and animal sciences, including horticulture and post-harvest technology, water-resource management, dairy development, hydroponics etc. H.E. Mr Stoelings stated that India and the Netherlands can gain a lot through mutual exchange and research.
 

BIRSA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, RANCHI

Start-up Event 'Agrivation'

Addressing the Start-up event 'Agrivation' on 8 Dec. 2017, Her Excellency Ms Droupadi Murmu, Governor of Jharkhand urged the educated youths to become job providers by starting their own innovative enterprise rather that running after jobs. A self-employed person is always better than a job seeker. She said that India is a country of youths with, nearly 65 per cent population below 30 years of age. This youth power has the potential to transform India into a superpower. The event was organized by Jharkhand Agency for Promotion of Information Technology in association with BAU and IT Department, Government of Jharkhand for identifying and encouraging the start-ups in farm sector. She further remarked that the contributions of agricultural scientists should be evaluated not by the number of research papers and technical bulletins published and varieties or technologies released, but by the efforts they have made on improving the socio-economic conditions of the farmers. She also stressed on integrated farming system for increased and sustainable income to the farmers. Dr Parvinder Kaushal, VC said that the state has great potential of 'start ups' in agriculture and allied sectors, and there is a need to give proper direction and support for translating their innovative ideas into enterprise. Shri Sarvesh Singhal, Chief Executive Officer, JAPIT informed that '16 start-up events' are to be organized in the state for selecting 50 innovators who think and plan differently to start an enterprise. Each such selected individual shall be provided an amount of Rs 10 lakhs by the state government to establish his/ her start up units to deliver goods and services in a better, efficient and transparent manner. He urged the youths to attend the event and think differently for innovation in a better way using ICT. The BAU scientists, agriculture and forestry graduates, innovators, investors and persons from the industry participated in the event and benefited a great deal. Another start-up event was organized at BAU on 5 December 2017 for veterinary, fishery and biotechnology graduates.

To mark the Golden Jubilee of Haryana, a 106 feet wide and 28 feet high magnificent Swarna Jayanti Dwar was built in the university at a cost of Rs 58 lakhs. The Chief Minister of Haryana, Shri Manohar Lal inaugurated 'Swarna Jayanti Dwar' of the university on 31 Oct. 2017. Established in 1970, this university has four entry gates 1, 2, 3 and 4. The university gate 4 was re-built and given the name Swarna Jayanti

Centre of Excellence for Organic Farming

The newly established Deendayal Upadhyay Centre of Excellence for Organic Farming at CCSHAU was inaugurated by Shri Manohar Lal on 31 Oct. 2017. This Centre of Excellence was set up to popularize organic farming in the state. Prof. K.P. Singh, VC told that at this Centre, the farmers will be trained in organic farming and as incubate e-farmers they will be extended scientific information on organic farming, marketing, storage and post-harvest technology. The organic products of this centre will be directly sold in the market in Delhi NCR. In this Centre, a custom hire centre will be operated by the university students, who will also train the farmers use of advanced equipments and their commercialization. Prof. Singh informed that the centre will be run on 'No profit-no loss' basis. Shri D.S. Dhesi, Chief Secretary; Shri Subhash Brala, BJP State President; local MLA, and Dr Kamal Gupta were also present at the occasions.
 

MoUs with US Universities

CCSHAU has signed MoUs with the University of Illinois , Washington State University and Michigan State University to further strengthen its research and academic pursuits. Prof. K.P. Singh, VC; and Dr Ashwani Kumar, Director of Human Resource Management, from CCSHAU and Dr Kent D. Rosh and Dr Vijay Singh from University of Illinois; and Prof. Lou Ana Simon from Michigan State University; and Prof. Kulwinder Gill from Washington State University signed the MoUs. As per Prof. K.P. Singh, the CCSHAU would work with these American universities on future agriculture which would besides increasing the agricultural production help in doubling the income of farmers. Under these bilateral agreements, the university faculty members will be trained at international level by exchange of faculty members, students and progressive farmers for better technology development and extension programme and also for setting up of 'Centre of Excellence'. The technology developed through this cooperation would also be extended to Asian and African countries under South-South collaboration with US universities. The MoU with University of Illinois will focus on science and engineering required to produce sustainable food, bio-fuels, and bio-products, Development of novel, cost-effective bioprocessing technologies that improve the recovery of chemical and phyto-chemical constituents from biological material and their conversion to higher-value industrial products will also be taken up. Recovery of natural pigments from crops like maize and several other plant species including weeds would help in meeting the industry demand of natural colours and dyes. Technology will be perfected to generate bio-fuels from rice
 
 
straw which is a major challenge today. Crops like sugarcane have great scope to generate bio-fuels and ethanol which will go a long way in increasing the farmers' income. Agronomists, plant breeders and engineers would be working together in achieving the goal. With Washington State University, the CCSHAU has already undertaken a joint project on bread wheat varieties that can tolerate terminal heat stress which is the major reason of lowering wheat yield due to heat and moisture stress prevailing at the time of crop harvest in March- 0 April in north Indian conditions. An increase of 1 C, lowers the wheat productivity by 5 per cent and is a major challenge for wheat breeders. The university will work with Washington State University on another project on lowering the silica content in both scented and non-scented rice varieties. Decrease in the silica content will improve the fodder value of paddy and help in meeting the challenge of rice-straw management. Work would be initiated to increase the aroma content to find the market of Indian rice in Europe that has presently captured by the USA. This will greatly help in increasing the farmers' income, a dream of our Prime Minister.

Bawal is a municipality in Rewari district in Haryana State which is under Delhi NCR. The College is operating Graduate programmes leading to B.Sc. (Hons) in Agriculture.

The 39 Foundation Day of CSKHPKV was celebrated on 1 Nov. 2017. Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial, VC during his address to the staff and students, exhorted to make 'excellence' a buzz word. He appreciated for adopting a motto: 'Respect work, Work hard and Create work culture' in their professional life. He further informed that 343 th students were conferred upon degrees during the 14 Convocation held in Sept. 2017, and the Chancellor of the University (Governor, Himachal Pradesh) applauded the congenial academic environment and work culture of the university. Prof. Sarial informed that this year, out of 343 graduates, 193 qualified for various national-level competitive examinations and 36 students got admission in prestigious national institutes for higher studies, whereas 96 students got job offers as Agriculture Development Officers and Veterinary Officers, etc from the state government. The university developed and released 11 crop varieties, and a poultry breed. He was satisfied that sincere efforts were made to encourage Zero-Budget Natural Farming.

The Alumni Association, College of Veterinary Science organized Pearl Jubilee th Alumni meet to celebrate 30 year of its existence. Dr N.K. Arora, IPS, IG (Intelligence), Punjab Police; and Dr K.K. Baxi, Former Dean, College of Veterinary Science were Guests of Honour. Both these guests shared their past memories with the august gathering. Dr A.S. Nanda, VC and Chief Guest of the function highlighted the performance of College of Veterinary Science and revealed that this meet has united the four generations of veterinarians. He further emphasized on the strong linkage between the university and field veterinarians to serve the farming community in a better way. 'Vet Alumnus', the official journal of the society, was released at this occasion. Eminent and decorated alumnis were awarded for their contribution to the profession as well as to the society.
 

Celebration of Agricultural Education Day

'Agricultural Education Day' was celebrated on 3 Dec. 2017 to apprise the students about various facets of agriculture and inspire them to choose veterinary and allied sciences as a career. More than 100 students from Partap Public School, Ramgarhia Senior Secondary School, DAV Public School, Ludhiana etc, participated in the function. On this occasion an essay-writing competition was organised for the school children on the topic "Role of Livestock in Indian Economy" and the winners were given away the prizes. The students visited Equine Section, Dairy Farm, Fishery Farms and learned about their rearing.
 

MoU under Progressive Public Private Partnership Model

The university signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Shri Vijay Garg, MD, M/s Shiva Poultry Equipments, Barnala to run the f i rst project under Progressive Public Private Partnership (P-3) model. This project is a brain-child of Dr A.S. Nanda, VC. He is of the v iew that col laborat ion between public and private partners can improve the productivity and act as a stimulant to growth in agriculture and food sectors leading to the improvement of economic conditions of farmers in India. He reaffirmed that the success of P-3 initiatives can make 'impossible into possible'. He stressed that the establishment of industrial incubator for poultry processing and product development would not only provide wholesome, hygienic and safe poultry products to the masses in addition to strengthening of teaching and research activities, but would act as a training hub for the budding entrepreneurs also.

Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR visited different departments of the University and Veterinary hospital meant for treatment and diagnostic facilities provided to large and small animals ; Dairy farm for elite animals (Murrah, Nili Ravi, Sahiwal and Beetal goat) and Fisheries college. He appreciated the health and diagnostic facilities of the hospital provided to the livestock owners of the Punjab and adjoining states and emphasized the need for the development, promotion and conservation of indigenous breeds of dairy animals in the state as well as at national level.
 
 

GOVIND BALLABH PANT UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY, PANTNAGAR

31st Convocation held

The 31 Convocation of the university was organized on 16 November 2017 in Gandhi Hall of the university. The Governor of Uttarakhand and Chancellor of the university, HE Dr K.K. Paul was the Chief Guest of the function, and delivered convocation address. Shri Rajesh Shukla, Member of Legislative Assembly was the special guest at this occasion. Prof. A.K. Misra, VC presented a report of the recent achievements of the university. In the convocation 1,261 undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. degrees were awarded to the students. The Chancellor's Gold Medal for the best undergraduate student was given to Ms Kavita Bisht. In addition, 14 Vice-Chancellor's Gold Medals, 15 Silver Medals and 12 Bronze Medals were also given to the meritorious undergraduates. Six students were given different awards including Shri Puran Anand Adalkha Award, Saraswati Panda Award, Nagamma Shanta Bai Award, Dr Ram Shiromani Tiwari Award and two Choudhary Charan Singh Smriti Pratibha Puraskar.

A delegation of France under the leadership of Prof . Cr istopher Grole, India Network Coordinator visited the university during 12-16 Nov. 2017. The 18-member delegat ion consisted of Agriculture Counsellor of French Embassy and a representative from French campus at New Delhi, besides representatives from various educational institutes of France. During the period, the delegation celebrated 'French Day' and also had meeting with Prof. A.K. Misra, VC and the Deans and Directors of the university. The university started bilateral collaboration with a French institute in fisheries almost a decade back through exchange of students. Now from 2016, the collaboration has become multifarious. Besides extending the cooperation to six colleges and exchange of 20-21 students per year,
 

 
the faculty members from both the countries would undergo shortterm training in each-others' country. There is also a plan to celebrate 'India Day in France.

The Department of Clothing and Textiles developed a fabric from dhaincha fiber that could be used as substitute to the existing jute and coir geotextiles for prevention of soil erosion on hill sides and reinforcement of paved and unpaved roads. Ms Monika Negi, a Ph.D. student, under the guidance of Dr Anita Rani conducted research on 'Processing of dhaincha fibres and development of nonwoven and woven structures for technical end uses'. Under the study, dhaincha fiber was extracted and processed for the development of different woven and non-woven fabric. Dhaincha fibre was extracted with four retting methods, scoured and softened with chemical, enzymatic and industrial softeners. The processed fibre was spun into yarn and used for manufacturing non-woven, two union and one pure woven fabric. The fibre, yarn and fabric were tested for their physical properties. The twisted yarn manufactured from the processed dhaincha fibres was found to have good strength but was coarser than the spun yarn. The fabric manufactured using jute warp and twisted dhaincha weft exhibited better fabric properties, followed by pure dhaincha fabric, owing to the use of coarser yarn that imparted better strength and other physical properties. Similarly, non-woven fabric exhibited good strength and elongation. Further, it was observed that the pure dhaincha fabric possessed properties close to the specifications for coir geotextiles given in BIS standard IS 15869:2008. Thus, the pure dhaincha non-woven and woven fabrics could be tested in field as substitute to the existing jute and coir geotextiles, for prevention of soil erosion on hill sides, and reinforcement of paved and unpaved roads.
 

AIPAN designs for Sarees

Ms Anuradha Arya, a Ph.D. student of Department of Clothing and Textiles, under the guidance of Dr Manisha Gahlot, explored AIPAN designs of Uttarakhand folk art for the development of handloom silk sarees with jacquard weaving during her research. In her study, attempts were made towards diversi f icat ion of Aipan designs by using them for handloom silk sarees with jacquard weaving technique which provided a new avenue to this art form, which can be popularized commercially in a well-established market. The motifs and designs of Aipan were adapted in three categories viz. buta, buti and border, for designing of saree. These silk sarees with folk designs AIPAN were appreciated by the working women as well as housewives. These sarees can be popularized at commercial level to promote the art of Uttarakhand as well as for entrepreneurship to generate income.

Among the 66 technologies developed by KAU which include process protocols developed for production of bio-control agents, organic inputs, health drinks, nutrient mixtures , cattle feed , processed products of fruits and vegetables , farm machinery or equipments, equipments for post-harvest handling of various crops, low cost organic fertigation system etc., three technologies were transferred to prospective entrepreneurs, as per the approved rates and common terms and conditions viz, (1) a nutrient mixture Ayar, designed for solving the secondary and micro nutrient deficiencies in banana; (2) Osmo-dried Nendran banana, an intermediate moisture food product, displaying excellent shelf life and retention of taste and colour; and (3) Red Banana Cool, a health drink developed from Red banana, the commercially popular banana variety of Southern Kerala. The technologies developed by the KAU were
 
formally presented during the valedictory function of VAIGA 2017 on 31 Dec. 2017 where Shri. A.C. Moideen, Minister, Industries, Government of Kerala handed over the technologies of these three products to KVK, Malappuram; Shri. Nithin Chandran, an entrepreneur; and Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council, Kerala.

A new formulation of 'readyto- use' Neem oil garlic soap was developed in 2015 by Dr Yamini Varma, C. K , Associate Professor (Plant Pathology) , Col lege of Agriculture, Padannakkad. It is in semi-solid form which can be used in a lower concentration of 0.6 per cent, for management of sap-sucking pests like mites, mealy bugs, thrips, aphids, fruit flies and leaf-eating pests like caterpillars and beetles. As a preventive measure, it can be sprayed at 15 days intervals. The keeping quality of the product is for 10 months. The product was approved by the Directorate of Research. Currently, the university has only two production centres, viz, College of Agriculture, Padannakkad and KVK, Palakkad (sales counter of RARS, Pattambi). From Pattambi, this formulation is mixed with birds chili extract also. Distribution is done from different sales counters of KAU and Biopharmacies of Department of Agriculture, Government of Kerala.

Dr P.H. Vataliya, VC, inaugurated the programme. Shri G.K. Sinha, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden of Gujarat was the Chief Guest. The seminar was a congregation of wildlife veterinarians, general veterinary practitioners, post-graduate students of veterinary science and fisheries science, wildlife rescuers and enthusiasts. Shri G.K. Sinha presented his broad perspective on the importance of education pertaining to the wildlife and highlighted the significance of ethical considerations to be taken while dealing with wild animals. Dr P.H. Vataliya discussed about research thrust areas and future prospects in wild life veterinary practice which was highly appreciated by the participants. Around 90 participants attend the seminar.

Organizing 30th ICAR-CAF Training

The 30 ICAR-Centre of Advanced Faulty Training was held during 7-27 Nov, 2017 at Department of Veterinary Microbiology of the university under theme 'Microbial Genomics and Proteomics in Diagnosis and Control of Diseases of Veter inary Importance'. Dr Sanjay Kapoor, Head, Department of Veterinary Microbiology was the Course Director and Dr N. K. Kakker, Principal Scientist and Dr Rajesh Chhabra, Scientist were the Course Coordinators. There were 15 participants from various SVUs, SAUs and ICAR institutions from 8 districts of India. Dr S. K. Gupta, Dean, COVS inaugurated the training on 7 Nov. 2017. The training aimed to update theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the areas of various genomic, proteomic and other modern technologies targeting diagnostics, prevention and control of various diseases of veterinary importance with the ultimate aim of animal health improvement. The practical demonstrations included hands-on training in various laboratories on multiplex RTPCR and sandwich ELISA (serotyping of FMD virus); DIVA strategy (FMD irus); PCR-RFLP based diagnostic tests; synthesis and characterization of gold nano particles; plasmid profile analysis; invitro expression and characterization of single domain antibody clone, selected from phage-display library; isolation of acute phase proteins; bio-informatics for studying molecular epidemiology; demonstration + + of CD4 and CD8 cells from mastitis milk; microbial identification and ® antimicrobial susceptibility testing using VITEK 2 compact system; multiplex molecular assay; luminex assays; microbial DNA sequencing including next generation sequencing analysis; monoclonal antibody-based diagnostic assays for detection of Pasteurella multocida and Trypanosomaevansi; real-time PCR and peptide ELISA; resazurin cytotoxicity and fluorescene polarization assays. New Synthetic Breeds Developed

The Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding, developed two new synthetic breeds of cattle (Hardhenu) and sheep (Harnali).
 

Hardhenu:

Hardhenu (cattle) Cattle
The Hardhenu crossbred cattle has 62.5 per cent exotic inheritance , with predominance of Holstein, developed by LUVAS, suited to agro-climatic conditions of Haryana and capable of producing 4,000 kg milk in a mature lactation, with fat content of more than 3.5 per cent.
 

Harnali:

Harnali (sheep) Sheep
Three breeds were used for the development of Harnali sheep: the indigenous breed (Nali), and two exotic (Merino and Corriedale). After 15 generations of interse mating and careful selection, the Harnali population is well stabilized, and at present there are 265 animals (192 females and 73 males) of Harnali sheep at the university sheep farm. The Harnali sheep is maintained for superior carpet wool and mutton production. Its average greasy-wool production is 2.0 kg per annum in two clips.

The Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics developed a technology for detect ion of early pregnancy in buf faloes. I t adopted transrectal ultrasonography, using rectal transducer with 5.0-7.5 MHz, for early pregnancy in buffaloes on day 18 after artificial insemination (AI). A very small amount of anechoic fluid was observed in the uterine lumen in the ipsilateral horn to CL, which increased on day 22; and temporary intra-uterine compartment formation was also recorded. Faetal heart beat was first time recorded on day 26 after AI, and it was used as a confirmatory sign of faetal viability. It was 100 per cent accurate sign of early pregnancy diagnosis in buffaloes.

The unit organized it for the livestock farmers of village Parsodi in Sakoli block of Bhandara district on 28 Dec. 2017. As a part of Reliance Foundation's Founder Week celebration, the college with its collaboration organized the Tele- Medicine 54 G Video-conferencing programme. Total 8 cases of medicine and gynaecology were diagnosed and the farmers were informed about the remedial measures.

A total of 17 lectures were delivered by the guests, dignitaries and faculty members; and 6 practical demonstrations and hands on training were performed by the participants. The participants visited 6 national and state level institutes. Valedictory function was held on 22 Nov. 2017; Dr A. D. N. Bajpai, Former VC, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla was the Chief Guest of the function. The 10-day training programme was concluded with the remark that the global threat of antimicrobial resistance can be combated only through the judicial and prudential use of antibiotics and alternative therapies such as phage therapy, herbal drugs, etc.

Tribal subplan project of ICAR, New Delhi , entitled 'Socioe conomic upliftment of tribal population of Jabalpur division of Madhya Pradesh by sustainable livestock production systems' is in operation in Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, Veterinary College, Jabalpur since 2012-13. Its objectives is to make the tribal population of Mandla and Seoni districts of Madhya Pradesh socio-economically self-sufficient, with sustainable livestock production systems.
Under the project several capacity-building programmes are being organized by the project team regularly. Improved technology of NDVSU, Jabalpur, i.e., Narmada Nidhi birds unit (10 cock+ 40 hens, superior germplasm of birds suitable for backyard farming, crossing Kadaknath with Jabalpur coloured broiler) and Sirohi goat unit (10 does+1 buck) were integrated in tribal farmers' livestock systems. Impact assessment of backyard poultry-farming revealed that on an average each SHG received income of Rs 17,032 through improved backyard poultry-farming practices and Rs 30,317 through improved goat- farming practices. About social impact, it was observed that this tribal society is male dominating where tribal women don't have access to finances.
 

Dual-Purpose Colour Bird "Narmada Nidhi"

A multi-coloured dual purpose coloured bird 'Narmada Nidhi' was developed by crossing and backcrossing of Kadaknath and Jabalpur Colour population. Birds mature in 162 days and produce annually over 220 eggs in the intensive, 191 eggs in the semi intensive, and 173 eggs in free-range system. Birds are very popular among the farmers and have greater demand in rural backyard poultry for both table and egg-production purposes.
 

Nucleus Herd of Sirohi and Barbari Goats

Male and female goats of Sirohi and Barbari breeds were procured from their respective breeding tracts and from Central Institute for Research on Goats, Makhdoom, Mathura. These goats were used to develop nucleus herd of the two breeds of Sirohi and Barbari. Attempts were made to develop nucleus herds of Sirohi and Barbari breeds by randomly allotted goat population to superior germplasm buck of each breed to develop the respective nucleus herds with superior genetic base.

 

Myostatin Gene Knocked-down Goat for improved Meat Production

A novel micromanipulator based "modified handmade cloning" was developed which significantly improved the success rate and speed of removal of nuclei from oocytes. Compact SCNT morula, using reprogrammed cumulus or fibroblast cell line was produced with oviductal co-culture. Human and mouse cooks culture (RVCL and Blast media) with some modifications for developing SCNT embryos was used. Normal SCNT embryos were surgically transferred in synchronized recipients which showed that 70 to 80 SCNT embryos were transferred successfully in 15 synchronized goats.
 

Designer or Enriched Egg

Dietary supplementation of Nigella sativa, Withania somnifera, selenium and vitamin E led to enriched egg, with increased concentrations of selenium to 28.65 per cent and Vitamin E to 30.35 per cent, besides 15 per cent reduction of cholesterol in comparison with normal egg. Expression of SREBP-2 and LDLr indicated the involvement of these two genes in hypocholestremic activity of Nigella sativa and Withania somnifera. The cost economics of designer or enriched egg came to Rs 8.33 per egg.

Punjab Kiran : Its fruits are medium in size (234.5 g), round to oblong and have pink flesh with small and soft seeds. Fruits have TSS 12.30% and acidity 0.44%. This hybrid is also suitable for processing.
 
Punjab Safeda - Guava
Punjab Safeda : Its fruits are medium to large in size (270.9 g) with smooth creamy-white skin, having white flesh and firm texture. Fruits have TSS 13.4% and acidity 0.62%. Its fruits have better shelf-life, and the physiologically mature fruits can be stored for 2 weeks in cold storage at 0 7±1 C temperature and 85-90% relative humidity.

The Aloe vera leaf gel-extraction machine gives maximum gel recovery of 59.7 per cent, minimum residual gel of 5.19 per cent, and high expulsion efficiency of 94.6 at roller speed of 75 rpm. This machine gives better results than manual extraction procedure.
 

National Project to Ms Bharti Gautam

Ms Bharti Gautam, a Ph.D. scholar in Department of Floriculture and Landscaping bagged an ad-hoc project on "Evaluating different ornamental plants for indoor vertical gardening, using different nutrient formulations and light intensities". The project is operated under the scheme for Young Scientists and Technologists, funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi. The total budget of the project for 3 years of research is Rs 24.98 lakh. Under the project, Ms Gautam intends to evaluate ornamental plants for indoor vertical gardening by using different nutrient formulations and light intensities under house conditions. Her research findings would help in aesthetically enriching the interiors of the houses and offices, and will ameliorate the interior air quality.

Ms Harjot Kaur, an NSS Volunteer from PAU was selected for Republic Day Parade and Camp to be held in New Delhi. She will be a part of the NSS contingent that will parade on Rajpath and give salute to the National Flag and the President of India. She is the first NSS volunteer of PAU to have been selected for such a camp. For her selection, Ms Harjot took part in Pre-Republic Day selection camp held at Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, on 11 Oct. 2017.

Dr Trilochan Mohapatra , Secretary , DARE & DG, ICAR, New Delhi, was the Chief Guest. Dr V. Praveen Rao, VC welcomed the dignitaries and participants and presented a brief report about the activities of the university during the period from 3 Sep. 2014 to 31 Jul. 2016. In the report, he pointed out that the university had been striving hard to achieve its triple mandate of Agricultural Education, Research and Extension through its 8 constituent Colleges, 15 agricultural research stations and 20 Extension units, spread over across the state. Higher education apart, the university had within its fold 13 polytechnics, focusing on imparting training to grass-root level workers in Agriculture, Seed technology and Agricultural Engineering. Dr Praveen Rao also informed that the university had adopted the ICAR's Deans' Committee recommendations about syllabus for all the undergraduate courses, developed virtual classrooms, state-of- theart central instrumentation cell and initiative an innovative Students Radio Programme 'Chenu Kaburlu'.
Dr Trilochan Mohapatra during his Convocation address opined that Agricultural Education needed introspection as well as reorientation to make it more relevant and vibrant to meet the current challenges successfully. He also pointed out that the Telangana state would have to overcome erratic distribution of rainfall, degrading soil health and dwindling freshwater availability to attain the targeted growth rate of 6 per cent in Agriculture. Dr Mohapatra further stated that the upcoming National Higher Agricultural Education Project, to be funded by World Bank, is aimed at improving relevance of higher education in agriculture, and it should be seen as an opportunity to attract talented students, competent faculty and innovative researchers in the field of agriculture. He also informed that the Soil Health Card Scheme, a visionary project of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, aims at providing farm-wise and crop-wise fertilizer recommendations to ensure efficient use of fertilizers.

Addressing the audience, H.E. Shri Narasimhan emphasized that the scient ists of Agriculture and Home Science have to work in tandem to encourage nutri-farming both in rural and urban areas, to combat protein hunger. Agricultural education with more practical orientation would enable the students to serve the farming community in a better way. Total 251 Post-graduate, 68 Ph.D. and 970 Undergraduate students in the faculties of Agriculture, Home Science and Agricultural Engineering & Technology were awarded degrees in the Convocation. During the Convocation, besides 17 gold medals to the students for their outstanding academic performance.

Mishra, VC, Chattisgarh Kamadhenu Viswavidyalaya were the Guests of Honour. Dr Y. Hari Babu, VC presided over the function. New Horizons in Cancer to Effect Animal Productivity

The Department of Surgery and Radiology, Centre for Veterinary Science, Tirupati in collaboration with Indian Society for Veterinary Surgery st organized 41 Nat ional symposium on "New horizons in cancer research pertaining to effect on health production and reproduction in animals" during 14 - 16 Dec. 2017. A total 500 delegates attended the conference from across the country and abroad. In the symposium, 550 scientific abstracts and 17 lead papers were presented. The conference was attended by Dr Y. An international workshop on Marine biotechnology and shrimp genetics research was organized by Directorate of Cent re for Sustainable Aquaculture at Nagercoil on 27 Oct. 2017. Presiding over the programme, Dr S. Felix, VC highlighted the need for research work in the field of fish genetics. He proposed research collaboration between the university and Oceanic Institute of Hawaii Pacific University. Inaugurating the programme, Dr Shaun M. Moss, Executive Director, Oceanic Institute of Hawaii Pacific University mentioned about the possibility for increasing the shrimp production in India through genetic improvement of the species. Dr J. Stephen Sampath Kumar, Director, Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture was the convener of the programme.
 

 

Workshop on Shrimp Industry

The international workshop on 'Innovative integration and intensification in Indian shrimp industry', was organized jointly by the university and World Aquaculture Society: Asian Pacific Chapter at Chennai on 3 Dec. 2017. During the inaugural function of the event, Dr S. Felix, VC underscored the vital role played by shrimp farm industry in the country's foreign-exchange earnings. He stressed on the need to follow the best management practices for improving the shrimp production. Dr A.G. Ponnaiah, Former Director, ICAR - CIBA, who was the guest of honour, highlighted the importance of the workshop. Mrs Krongkanit Rakcharoen, Royal Thai Consulate, the Chief Guest, stated that the deliberations of the workshop would benefit the shrimp farmers in integrating the innovations with their existing knowledge and experience. Dr Farshad Shishehchian, President and CEO, WAS, delivered felicitation address. The inaugural programme was followed by technical deliberations including talks by international experts and Indian scientists. Dr B. Ahilan, Dean i/c., FCRI, Ponneri was the convener of the programme.

The Third Annual Convocation of the university was held on 21 Dec. 2017 at Shivamogga. Dr C. Vasudevappa, VC, National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management was the Chief Guest and delivered the Convocation address. Dr P. Narayanswamy, VC, Members of Board of Management, officers of the university, staff members, students, dignitaries as well as press and media persons were present. Dr C. Vasudevappa, in his Convocation address, stressed that it is one of the youngest university to get ICAR accreditation in less than 5 years period. In the Convocation, 274 under-graduate (B.Sc. Agric./Hort./Forestry), 99 Masters and 12 doctoral degrees (Ph. D.), besides 15 Gold Medals for UG students, 12 Gold Medals for PG students and 4 Gold Medal for Ph. D. degree holders were awarded. In the beginning, Dr P. Narayanswamy welcomed the Chief Guest and other dignitaries to the convocation and presented the brief report on the progress of the university. Shri Krishna Byre Gowda, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university and the Minister for Agriculture, Government of Karnataka, presided over the function and conferred the degrees to all the graduates.

Improved Technologies

Direct sown rice technology using seed drill

A new technology was developed and introduced to the farmers, viz. Direct sown rice technology. This technology saves water up to 30 per cent and Rs 17,500-20,000 per ha. without reduction in yield. Currently, this technology spread in 1 lakh ha. in the university's jurisdiction, and it is likely to spread in entire Karnataka as well.
 

GBM-2 Bengal gram

Genotype - GBM-2
A straight and tall growing erect (> 50 cm) genotype was developed, which is resistant to root-rot diseases and sui table for mechanical harvesting. It saves Rs 2,500/ha and covers about 1 ha. per hour.
 

Electronic Solution for Agriculture Pests Technology

This device (tab) in the hands of the farmers gives information of pest, disease, weeds etc in the field itself. The university is the pioneer in developing and adopting this technology covering all crops. The ICT in agriculture intends to dwell upon the following strategies viz. (i) Agricultural extension and advisory service; (ii) Promote environmentally sustainable farming practices; (iii) Disaster management and early warning systems; (iv) Improved market access; (v) Food safety and traceability; (vi) Financial inclusion, insurance and risk mitigation; (vii) Capacity building and empowerment; and (viii) Regulatory and policy.
 

Processing and Value Addition

To meet the today's global market, quality and food safety, processing and value addition technologies of milletbased bakery products, honey, Aloe vera, goat and donkey milk was developed, viz.,
  • Millet-based bakery products like bread, biscuit sand cakes /muffins were developed.
  • Honey powder was developed by mixing honey, malto dextrin and water in the ratio of 1:1:3, it was mixed with 1.75 per cent tricalcium phosphate (Anticaking agent) and 0 then dried in 200 C, to get good - quality honey powder.
  • lGoat milk powder was produced by pasturing fresh milk at 72 C for 15 sec. for 39 per cent solidification. The milk is subjected for spray drying under 171 C and then 0.32 per cent Lecithin powder was mixed and dried under 60 C in fluidized bed. The dried milk powder was thus packed in a aluminium foil for 6 months.

Prof. Ashok Kumar Sarial, VC was honoured with an award of Rs 1 lakh, a citation and a memento by the Farmers, Department of Agriculture and Global Institutes , Amritsar (Punjab) for his outstanding contributions on developing Pusa Basmati 1121; world's longest grain variety. In a rare gesture, Prof. Sarial pledged the entire prize money to the host institute for encouraging the farmers to grow Pusa Basmati 1121 organically. Due to adoption of Pusa Basmati 1121, India is now world leader in basmati production and export. The variety is contributing 70 per cent of the total basmati export earnings of Rs 25,000-30,000 crores annually. Besides, research work in the Department of Organic Agriculture, demonstration units on zero budget natural farming have been established at two Krishi Vigyan Kendras.

Dr Arif Pandit attended 5 Annual meeting of International Cytokine and Interferon Society, held in Kanazawa, Japan. Dr Arif presented a research article entitled "Pulmonary up regulation of HMGB1 signalling, following fipronil and endotoxin interaction" authored by Drs Arif Pandit, R.K. Gandham, Ramneek Verma and R.S. Sethi. Dr Arif is presently pursuing his Ph. D. research under the supervision of Dr R.S. Sethi, in the School of Animal Biotechnology. He was granted Kishimoto travel award by International Cytokine and Interferon Society, Japan. The award included a cash prize of 100,000 JPY for international travelling, boarding and lodging.

The honour was given to the university for getting first place among the cleanest higher educational institutions in Government Institution category at national level. This ranking was adjudged by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

Pantvarsity scientist, Dr Reeta Goel, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities was honoured with 'Governor's Best Research Paper Award' for the year 2016- 17 from H.E. Dr K.K. Paul, the Governor of Uttarakhand, at a function at Raj Bhawan, Dehradun. Prof. A.K. Misra, VC was also present. She received this award second time in the last 3 years, since the inception of the award in 2014-15 which was given for her research paper related with survival of micro-flora in nitrogendeficient soils in high altitude Himalayan regions. In this work, two students, Dr Deep Chandra Suyal, SERB young scientist, and Shri Saurabh Kumar, Ph.D. scholar were also associated.

Gold Medal in NIC to NCC cadets

A total of 16 cadets of 1 (MAH) R & V Squadron, NCC of Nagpur Veterinary College attended National Integration Camp NIC-I in New Delhi from 25 Oct. to 5 Nov. 2017. The contingent was led by Capt. N. C. Nandeshwar. The NIC Camps are held every year at different places in India under the auspices of NCC. There were participation of 16 different directorates in the camp. The 16 cadets representing Maharashtra Directorate secured the first position and won Gold Medal for group dance competition. Two cadets secured second position and won silver medal in debate competition. Dr N. N. Zade, Associate Dean, Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur and Lt. Col. Harendra Tiwari, Officer Commanding congratulated the cadets for their achievement.

Prof. Surapaneni Koteshwara Rao joined as the third Vice Chancellor of RVSKVV, Gwalior, (Madhya Pradesh) on 26 Oct. 2017. He is an accomplished plant breeder by profession and an able research manager as well as administrator. Prof. Rao was born in Andhra Pradesh on 8 March, 1952 and obtained Doctorate and Master Degree from JNKVV, Jabalpur with a brilliant academic record and served there for more than 36 years. He has developed several crop varieties and established the brand image for high-quality seeds and planting materials, called 'Jawahar Seeds'. He published more than 200 research papers and books. He restructured the commercial farm operations from cost centre to profit centre. He also established Agribusiness incubator and developed JNKVV seed and bio-fertilizer consortium. He guided 30 M.Sc. and 10 PhD. students. He established Agri-business and Agri Clinic Centre at Agri Business Incubator at JNKVV, Jabalpur.
Prof. Rao figured in various committees of national agriculture research systems, Ministry of Agriculture. His contributions have been recognized with several awards such as Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award for Biennium 2007-2008 for Outstanding Contribution in Field of Crop Science; Dr Kailash Nath Katju Award for Year 2008 for Contributions in Science, ICAR Award for Outstanding Inter-Disciplinary Team Research in Agriculture and Allied Sciences for Biennium 2007-2008 for Outstanding Research Contribution in Soybean Improvement; Achievers Award 2010 for Contribution in Agriculture Development, etc. IAUA extends warm welcome on his taking over as VC.
