Visit of Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, to CVSc & A.H., Aizawl

Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE & Director-General, ICAR, Government of India, visited College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Selesih, Aizawl, (Mizoram) on 2 Sep. 2017. Dr S.V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR Centre for NEH Region; and Dr Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR, NRC on Mithun, (Nagaland), accompanied him. Dr D. Kathiresan, Dean, CVSc & A.H., welcomed the Director-General and the Directors, and briefed about Teaching, Research and Extension activities of the college and its significant achievements.

In his address, he highlighted the goal set by Prime Minister of India of "Doubling farmers’ income by 2022", and urged the faculty members to work hard in hand with the farming communities. He also released a booklet on Backyard Poultry Farming written in Mizo language and College Profile booklet. Earlier Dr S.V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR Centre NEH Region, briefed about the farmers of Mizoram. Speaking on the programme, Dr Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR, NRC on Mithun, (Nagaland) advised the students to focus on their studies.

Waste Management

On 14 Aug. 2017 a project on “University Campus Waste Management Strategies” of Rs 74.9 lakhs was launched by Dr R. C. Srivastava, VC, DRPCAU. The project is aimed at recycling the waste generated in the campus due to different activities.

Soil Health

The Society for Promotion of Agricultural Research and Knowledge (SPARK) of Cornell University visited DRPCAU, Pusa during 9-10 Aug, 2017 to have a project on Soil Health. The objectives of the project are: (i) establish a relationship with the university and draw the contours of a soil-health collaborative effort in the context of Tata-Cornell Initiatives (TCI); (ii) establish a basic-soil-health laboratory facility at the Pusa campus; and (iii) discuss research ideas on soil health that would strengthen the existing as well as potential future field research efforts. The team included Dr Harold M. van Es, International Professor, Faculty Fellow, Atkinson Centre for Sustainability, Soil and Crop Section, Cornell University; Dr R. K. Gupta , President, SPARK; and Ms Kavya, Post- graduate student at Cornell University. On 9 Aug, 2017 the team visited the experimental plots at HQ and TCA, Dholi. Sabhagar. On the second day, the team along with Dr Mrityunjay Kumar, Dr Ranjan Laik and Dr J. P. Upadhayay, (Director of Research) discussed all the critical points related to the objectives, and met the Vice-Chancellor to brief him about the programme, time frames, co-ordination logistic and other issues.

 

Visit under UIUC-APPHL Project

A high-profile delegation visited the University during 7- 8 August 2017. The members of the delegation were: Dr Robert Easter, President Emeritus of University of Illinois; Dr Kimberlee Kidwell, Dean of College of ACES; Dr Prasanta Kalita, Associate Dean of College of ACES; Dr Pradeep Khanna, Associate Vice-Chancellor, University of Illinois; Dr Alex Winter-Nelson, Director, Office of International Programmes, College of ACES, from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, the USA. An interaction meeting was organized under the chairmanship of Dr R.C. Srivastava, VC on 7 Aug, 2017 to discuss the issues relating to the project on “Assessment and prevention of post-harvest losses in wheat and maize in selected districts of Bihar through community participation”. On 8 Aug, 2017 the team along with scientists working in the project and the VC visited the project site and they interacted with farmers.

Sankalp se Siddhi: New India Movement (2017-2022)

To commemorate the spirit of completion of 75 years of launching 'Quit India Movement’ as per the directives of Ministry of Agr icul ture & Farmers' Welfare, Sankalp se Sidhi, a pledge ceremony was organized on 9 Aug. 2017, at the headquarters. All the teaching and non-teaching employees and students participated in the function, where Dr K.M. Singh, Director of Extension Education administered the pledge to all those present, who signed a form to this effect. In continuation, Sankalp se Siddhi: New India Movement (2017-22) during 19-30 Aug. 2017 was also celebrated in different KVKs. On 23 Aug, 2017, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Saran organized the programme, which was inaugurated by Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Union Minister of State, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge), Government of India. Shri Janardan Singh Sigriwal, Member of Parliament, Maharajganj, graced the occasion as Guest of Honour, and Dr R. C. Srivastava, Vice Chancellor, presided this programme, in which 2000 farmers and other stake-holders participated. Shri R.P. Rudy administered the oath of swaraj, cleanliness, doubling the farmer’s income etc. to all those present.

MoU for Banana tissue culture

On 17 Aug. 2017 a MoU was signed with M/s Sheel Biotech Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, for establishment of Banana Tissue Culture Laboratory at Banana Research Station, Goraul (Vaishali). About 10 lakhs banana tissue- culture plantlets will be produced every year by this laboratory. Emphasis will be laid on popular local varieties like Malbhog, Alpan, China and Kothia.

Husbandry, in collaboration with Alumni Association of Veterinary College, Anand (AAVCA) and Gujarat Veter inary Association, Gandhinagar, under the aegis of World Veterinary Day Celebration, on 29 Apr, 2017. Total 285 delegates were registered from State Animal Husbandry Department, Co-operative Dairies, NDDB, Sate Agricultural Universities, and Post-graduate students across the state.

The inaugural function was presided by Dr N.C. Patel, Vice Chancellor and Director of Animal Husbandry Gujarat State and Dr Hita Patel, President GVC, was the chief guest. Dr R.V. Modhavadia, President, GVA was the guest of honour. On this occasion, a Souvenir-cum- Compendium of Invited Lead was released. Dr N.C. Patel, said that recommendations from the deliberations of the seminar for the researchers, policy-makers and field veterinarians, in addressing the issue of uses and misuses of antimicrobial to combat antimicrobials resistance in human and veterinary practices will be of great importance.

A krishi mahotsav of 23 days, from 0-6-27 May, 2017 was launched by the Government of Gujarat . Under this programme a seminar–cum–Exhibition, a mega event, was organized on 6 May, 2017 at Nadiad, (dist. Kheda) by the university in collaboration with district Administration and Department of Agriculture, Co-orporation and Farmers’ Welfare, GoG, Gandhinagar.

Shri. Vijaybhai Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat, inaugurated it. Several state and cabinet ministers of Gujarat, Legislative assembly members, district panchayat/ taluka panchayat, Presidents, Directors of various departments of Gujarat State, vice – chancellor of AAU, Dr N. C. Patel and besides VCs of other agricultural universities of Gujarat, graced the occasion. Shri Rupani also inaugurated Agricultural Exhibition set with 100 stalls related to Agriculture and allied fields.

Building Workshop on Bio-safety Capacity

A state-level bio-safety capacity building workshop, under the UNEP/GEF Suppor ted Phase II, a capacity-building project on Bio-safety was organized jointly by Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF & CC) , Government of India, New Delhi; M/s Biotech Consortium India Ltd., New Delhi; AAU, Anand and Department of Agriculture, Government of Gujarat on 13 July, 2017. Dr N. C. Patel, chaired the inaugural session. Dr K.B. Kathiria welcomed all the dignitaries and emphasized that the GMOs are very much needed to break the yield plateau in many crops, to meet the ever-increasing demand of food across the globe. Dr Vibha Ahuja, Chief General Manager, BCIL, introduced the objectives of the workshop and explained in brief the bio-safety regulations in India. Dr Qureshi, Joint Director (Agriculture), stressed on the need to create awareness among the farmers, who are actual end-users of the technology. Dr B. Sesikeran, Chairman, RCGM, in his keynote address, advocated the role of State Governments in GM regulation,

and informed the house that bio-safety norms in India are most stringent and GM varieties are thoroughly tested for safety assessment during their developmental stages. Dr N.C. Patel, Vice Chancellor, said that we should have a comprehensive agricultural policy, including GM crops.

The other distinguished speakers from Gujarat included Dr R.S. Fougat, Professor & Head, Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, AAU, Anand; Dr Chandermohan Singh, DGR-ICAR, Junagadh; Dr Rajesh Patkar, MSU, Baroda; Dr Pradeep. K. Agarwal, CSMCRI, Bhavnagar and Dr R.S. Tomar, JAU, Junagadh.

Nearly 120 participants attended the workshop, which included scientists and teachers from Anand Agricultural University; other State Agricultural Universities of Gujarat; faculty members from MSU, Baroda; SPU, V. V. Nagar; National institutes like CSMCRI, Bhavnagar; DMAPR, Boriavi; officials of State Department of Agriculture, Gujarat; besides the seed-company representatives and farmers.

Quinquennial Review Team at MMRS, AAU, Godhra

The Quinquennial Review Team (QRT) visited Main Maize Research Station, AAU, Godhra on 19-20 July 2017 for review and assessment of last 5 year’s research activities carried out in maize of Zone –V (Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan). This station played host for this event. The ICAR constituted this high power committee under the chairmanship of Prof. S.K. Datta, former DDG (Crop Science), ICAR. The members of QRT team were: Dr Sain Dass, former Project Director (Maize); Dr I.P.S. Ahlawat; Dr A.K. Sharma and Dr K. Srinivas. Dr Sujay Rakshit, Director, Indian Institute of Maize Research, Ludhiana, also accompanied the QRT team.

The interface meeting was organized on 20 July 2017 with starch and distillery industries, to discuss the need of maize industry and challenges faced by them. The representatives from M/s Sayaji Maize Products, Ahmedabad; M/s Roquette Ridhdhi Sidhdhi, Ahmadabad and M/s Tata Foundation, Dahod participated in the meeting and discussed about the problems in maize procurement and basic needs of maize for industrial purpose. The Director, IIMR, Ludhiana specified the key points for future research need in maize useful for the industry. At the completion of the session, Dr S.L. Jat, Member-Secretary, QRT team, ended the meeting with vote of thanks.

Anand on 4 July 2017. They had a meeting with Dr K.B. Kathiria, Director of Research and Dean Post graduate Studies; along with the university officers, and all the Deans, which was followed by discussion on various areas such as streamlining of Polytechnic diploma programmes in Maharashtra, similar to the one operating at AAU, Anand and the mode of conducting the examination pattern at AAU. Dr R.S. Pundir, Professor and Head, Department of Agribusiness Economics and Policies, IABMI, AAU, Anand, highlighted significant achievements made by the university.

Visit of Joint India-South Africa Delegation

Joint India-South Africa Delegation visited university on 12 July, 2017 for discussing the possibility of bilateral cooperation in the field of agricultural education and research between South Africa and India. The South African delegation included Mr Daan Du Toit, Deputy Director- General, International Cooperation and Resources, DST; Ms Punkah Mdaka, Overseas Bilateral cooperation (Asia and Americas), DST; Mr Kagiso Moloto, Assistant Director, Overseas Bi lateral Cooperation; and Ms Nombuso Madonda, Professional Officer, International Relations and Co-operation, NRF. The Indian delegation who accompanied them was led by Dr Vipin Kumar, Director, National Innovation Foundation – India, Ahmedabad; Dr Naman Upadhyay, Representative from Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi; Dr Sulakshana Jain, Scientist D, DST,

New Delhi; and Dr Naushad Parvez, Fellow, NIF. An interaction meeting was held with Dr N.C. Patel, VC; Dr K.B. Kathiria, Director of Research; Dr Arun Patel, Director of Extension Education; and all other university officers as well as Deans of AAU, Anand. Dr R.S. Pundir, Professor and Head, Department of Agri-business Economics and Policies, IABMI, made a brief presentation about various educational, research and extension activities of AAU, and highlighted significant achievements made by the university. Dr N.C. Patel welcomed all the dignitaries and briefed them about the salient achievements of AAU in recent past, especially the involvement of AAU in farmers fair, exhibition programmes, etc. He highlighted the significance of scope of generating employment through co-operation between the universities of South Africa and AAU. Mr Daan asserted that they wished to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries in Science and Technology, Research and Innovation.
A plenary session was held at Conference hall of Veterinary College, AAU, Anand, chaired by Dr N.C. Patel, VC, who expressed that Dr Daan looked highly satisfied with his visit to the AAU. He assured that the AAU can render support to South African universities in specific areas such as development of bio-fertilizers based on microbes, soil-testing, rain-water harvesting, microirrigation, devising farm machineries, use of renewable energy, germ-plasm exchange, etc. Dr Patel also laid emphasis on venturing into collaborative research and possible exchange programme for the students as well as for staff. Dr Daan was especially impressed by the students’ involvement at Vidya Dairy, Anand. The media persons took press conference of Dr N.C. Patel, and of Dr Daan, Deputy Director-General, South Africa about the objective of the visit and the future plan of action by AAU, Anand with South African universities.

The new campus of College of Fisheries was inaugurated in the presence of Central Minister of State for Railways, Government of India; Minister of Agriculture, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Government of Assam; and Deputy Director-General (Fisheries), ICAR, New Delhi among other dignitaries on 3 May, 2017 at Raha, (Assam). Presiding over the ceremony, Dr. K. M. Bujarbaruah, VC, acknowledged the contribution of the people of Raha and the local organizations in bringing this long-cherished dream into reality.

CCS HARYANA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, HISAR

Oats Variety for Release in Hill Zone

A new variety of Oats ‘Central Oats OS 424’ developed at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University was identified for release in hills zone of the country. The Varietal Identification Committee of the ICAR identified this variety for cultivation in the hills states of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand.

OS 424 is a single-cut variety, suitable for cultivation under irrigated and timely sown conditions. It gave 296 q/ha green-fodder yield, which was 15.8% and 15.6% more than of the national checks Kent (256 q/ha) and OS 6 (256.4 q/ha) respectively in the hills zone. It also gave 12.5% more green-fodder yield than the zonal check variety SKO 90 (263.6 q/ha). In dry matter yield, OS 424 out yielded (65.1q/ha) the best national checks Kent (55.3 q/ha) by 17.6% and OS 6 (55.9 q/ha) by 16.4 %. Besides, this variety also out yielded the zonal check SKO 90 (58.3 q/ha) by 11.7 %. It also has better nutritional qualities, possessing 9% of crude protein and capable of giving 13.5 q/ha seed yield.

The variety OS 424 was developed by a team of scientists of Forage Section of the university, which comprised Drs R.N. Arora, Mr D.S. Phogat, Mr Yogesh Jindal and Mr N.K. Thakral in collaboration with Drs R.S. Sheoran, Anil Gupta and U.N. Joshi.

ISO Certification for Farm Machinery-Testing Centre

The Farm Machinery Testing Centre of Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, achieved another milestone by getting ISO 9001: 2015 certification. Recently, Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, H.E. the Governor of Haryana, inaugurated the Engine Test Laboratory at this centre. This Centre has been testing different agricultural machineries for the last 7 years, manufactured by different industries, to ensure availability of quality products to the farmers. Prof. K.P. Singh, VC, lauded Er. Mukesh Jain, In-charge of Testing Project, for help in securing ISO certification. The Testing Centre has released more than 500 test reports till date.

Tractor-Operated Dry Leaves Collector

Prof. K.P. Singh, VC, pressed into service a Tractor- Operated Dry Leaves Collector, which was developed and designed by himself, along with the support of Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering of the university and a private manufacturer.
The equipment has the ability to suck dry leaves from the heaps and store it in the rear-mounted tipping trolley, which can be downloaded in no time. The equipment will be used to collect the dry biomass from the university campus and convert it into compost.

Linseed

Indu: This variety is suited for irrigated condition, is erect, with blue flower, 72-75 cm plant height, resistant to alternaria blight, rust and wilt; has medium capsule, is brown seeded, having 9.6g test weight with yield potential of 10- 12 q/ha. It is dual purpose.

Uma: This variety is suited for rainfed condition, is erect, with blue flower, of 60 cm plant height, is resistant to alternaria blight, rust and wilt, has medium capsule, is light brown seeded, having 7.8 g test weight, with yield potential of 8- 10 q/ha.
KM 2328 (Arun) Greengram

Moongbean

Moongbean Variety KM 2328 (Arun) : It is high-yielding, early and synchronous in maturity, resistant to moongbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) and cercospora leaf spot (CLS), is medium bold seeded, has shining green seeds, and is recommended for the entire state for the summer season.

KLS 122 (Shekhar 5) : It is small seeded, developed in 2016 by the SVRC, Lucknow, suited for late-sown condition of whole U.P. especially for tarai and western region, having green foliage, semi-erect; plant vigorous, seed reddish grey, profuse branches with high number of pods, maturity 110-115 days, small seeded, 100-seed weight 2.00g/100seed, good yielder, wide adaptability, resistant to wilt and rust, easily cooked, having good taste and palatability, easily digestible, and has antioxidant property.
KLS 112 (Shekhar 6) lentil
KLB 112 (Shekhar 6): Bold-seeded variety, released in 2016 by the SVRC, Lucknow, suited for timely sown condition of whole U.P. especially for Bundelkhand region. It has dark green foliage, semi-erect; seed reddish grey mottled, profuse branches with high number of pods, maturity 120-123 days, bold seeded, 100-seed weight 2.8 g/100 seed, good yielder, wide adaptability, resistant to wilt and rust.
Prakhar (K 1055) barley

Barley

Prakhar (K 1055): Developed for irrigated normal sown condition, bold seeded, crop maturity in 130-135 days, average yield 38 q /ha, with potential of 51q/ha, resistant to yellow, brown and black rust.
K1317 wheat

Wheat

Variety K 1317 : Suited for North-Eastern Plains Zone, comprising, Eastern and Central part of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bangal and Assam under rainfed timely sown condition. It has dark green leaves, awned, fusiform, dull whitecoloured ears, bold amber colour, semi-hard

grains, average yield 32 q/ha, with medium maturity (120-128 days), better chapatti quality (8.05%) and high extraction rate (71.2%) as well as resistant to all major diseases.

The CSKHPAU, Palampur hosted its 14 convocation on 8 Sep, 2017. H.E. Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Himachal Pradesh & Chancellor, CSKHPAU; and Shri B.B.L. Butail, Speaker, Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, graced the occasion. On this occasion, 19 Ph.D., 97 Masters and 227 Bachelors degrees were conferred. Twenty two students received gold medals in various subjects and 90 students received certificate of honour. Shri Acharya Devrat, exhorted the scientists and students to work on such technological intervention that have direct effect on the prosperity of farmers. Shri B.B.L. Butail, congratulated all the degree recipients and called upon them to work dedicatedly for strengthening the state and put their knowledge for improving the farming activities in the state.

Record success in JRF and SRF

Ninety one undergraduate and post-graduate students of the university qualified Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) examinations conducted by the ICAR. Nine students also qualified Agri-management examinations of other national management institutes. Most of the students after qualifying JRF and SRF have joined prominent national institutes. Apart from this, 61 post-graduate students of the university qualified NET conducted by the ICAR and UGC, this year.

Women Scientist Scheme Fellowship to Ph.D. Student

Ms Annu Verma, a Ph.D. student, Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, College of Agriculture bagged Women Scientist Scheme fellowship, with financial support of Rs. 5 lakhs to carry on research on cold-stress tolerance in chickpea, and fellowship of Rs. 30 thousand per month for duration of 3 years from the Department of Science and Technology, Union Ministry of Science and Technology, New Delhi.

An "Interactive Meet of Comptrollers of State Agricultural Universities, Deemed Universities, Central Universities and Central Agricultural Universities” was held at the University during 17-18 Aug, 2017.

Shri Shanta Kumar, Member, Parliament & former Chief Minister of H.P. and former Union Minister, Government of India, in his inaugural address highlighted the role of farming in Indian economy. He stressed that financial management should look into the needs of the nation and should focus on proper planning and effective implementation.

The university developed and recommended new highyielding variety of rice, viz. Ratnagiri-7. This variety is semi-dwarf in height (100 to 110 cm), midlate in duration (122 to 125 days) and has short bold grain type. Its average yield is 4.5 to 5.0 t/ha, with higher milling percentage (64.17%) and high head-rice recovery percentage (60.65%). This variety contains 90 ppm iron and 21 ppm zinc, whereas brown and polished rice contains 15.4 ppm iron and 9.7 ppm zinc, respectively. It is resistant to stem borer, leaf folder and gall midge.

Groundnut: Konkan Bhuratna

The university developed and recommended new highyielding variety of groundnut, viz. Konkan Bhuratna. This variety is dwarf in height (25 to 30 cm), medium in duration (115 to 120 days) and has medium bold grain (100-kernel weight 45 to 50 g). Its average yield is 25 to 30 q/ha, with shelling percentage (kharif 73.5 to 76.0 % and rabi 70.2 to 76.3 %). It has 26 days fresh-seed dormancy, 50.01 % oil content and 23.44 % protein content. It is resistant to early and late leaf spot, rust, PBND and alternaria leaf blight disease. It is also resistant to thrips, jassids, leaf miner and defoliator insects and pests.

Brinjal : Konkan Prabha

This high-yielding variety of brinjal, viz. ‘Konkan Prabha' (DPLBr-3) has been recommended and released for cultivation in Konkan region during rabi season. Fruits of this variety are long, with lustrous purple colour. It is resistant to bacterial wilt, with average yield of 310 q/ha.

A training programme on Improved Vegetable Cultivation, followed by distribution of critical inputs, was conducted in Seethappagudem village on 8 Aug, 2017 by KVK, Venkataramannagudem. Dr R.V.S.K. Reddy, Director of Extension, participated and explained about the improved vegetable practices for reducing the cost of cultivation and increasing the yields. He highlighted the IPM practices in vegetables, and
then critical inputs were given to the tribal farmers. About 100 farmers from vegetable-growing villages of Buttaigudem and Jeelugumilli mandals participated in the programme.

World Adivasi Diwas was organized by HRS, Kovvur under Tribal sub plan programme of AICRP on Fruits at Cheemalavarigudem, of Buttayagudem mandal and by KVK, Venkataramannagudem at Chegondapalli village of Polavaram mandal on 9 Aug, 2017. The planting materials of mango, sapota, jack fruit and acid lime were distributed and planted in tribal households for nutritional security.

Veterinary Science has started a new course of 1 month durat ion on "Important veterinary clinical procedures”. In the first course, total nine veterinarians participated, including two from Canada. During the training course the participants were trained practically in general anaesthesia, surgery, radiology, necropsy, large and small animal medicine, and clinical pathology. The training consisted of different clinical procedures, complying with ethical approach on the pattern undertaken in foreign developed countries.

Status among State Veterinary Universities of the Country

The GADVASU has been ranked first among the 14 State Veterinary Universities of India, as per the ranking of Agricultural Universities and Research Institutes conducted by Agricultural Education Division, ICAR for the year th 2016-17. It is ranked 9 among all 57 Agricultural Universities, Veterinary Universities and st Research Institutes of India. Earlier, the university was ranked 81 th among 3,390 Higher Educational Institutions in India, and ranked 50 among all educational universities of the country under National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2017, conducted by the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development, New Delhi, for its commendable role in teaching, research and extension programmes.

Student Brings Laurels to Institute

Ajaypal Singh Kahlon, a post-graduate student of School of Public Health and Zoonoses, GADVASU brought laurels to the university, on his selection for integrated Ph.D. programme in prestigious Western College of Veterinary Sciences at University of Saskatchewan, (Canada), starting from September 2017 onwards. During the study period he will be awarded annual grant of 18,000 CAD$, until completion of his tenure. He will work with Dr Catherene Soos, Adjunct Professor, Department of Veterinary Pathology, Western College of Veterinary Sciences, University of Saskatchewan, (Canada). Dr Ajaypal completed M. V. Sc. in Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology from School of Public Health and Zoonoses, GADVASU, in July 2017, under the guidance of Dr Jasbir Singh Bedi, Assistant Professor. His research work was on human brucellosis.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barnala (GADVASU) developed a straw- straining machine. It is based on a very simple technology. When the farmer prepares straw of wheat, lot of dust comes with straw, and the straw becomes very fine during the process. It has come to notice that the farmers feed wheat straw to their
animals as such or without straining, and lot of dust is ingested by the animals along with straw in the form of RINI (a ball of dust) and sand; result a number of digestive problems do develop in the animals. The problems are like constipation in animals, reduces intake of straw by the animals, reduction in the palatability of straw, decline in digestibility of animals, development of ulcers etc. As a result, the animal feels weakness, which leads to reduced milk production. Dust in straw may also affect human body, like dust allergy and breathing troubles. This machine can be fabricated by local fabricators, by using simple sieve of iron and tin sheet. The KVK is completely equipped to give any input or technology to the farmers for the fabrication of machine on their own end.

College of Fisheries developed shrimp pickle, prepared from vannamei shrimp, produced in saline water areas of Punjab. It is a highly priced export commodity, and is contributing more than 60% to the total aquatic products exported from India. Hence, shrimp pickle has been developed for enhanced value and availability of shrimp in the market. It can help the farming community in development of small-scale entrepreneurships and employment generation, with special reference to rural women.

Black currant lassi is a new variety of lassi, launched by College of Dairy Science and Technology. This lassi is prepared by incorporation of natural black currant fruit pulp. Black currant contains a high amount of flavonoids (anthocyanins / polyphenolic substances) that promotes cardiovascular health and other health benefits. Black currant fruit is also effective against cancer due to its rich antioxidant content, it contains double the amount of antioxidants than blueberries. Black currants carry four times the amount of vitamin C than oranges, which is essential for skin care and anti-ageing. It increases immunity for protection from cold and flu, and is also effective in protecting from other infections. Black currant contains a high amount of vitamin A, which increases eye vision and its rich source of antioxidants protects eyes from free radicals. Black currant provides a high amount of calcium which strengthens bone and teeth. It is also effective in preventing osteoporosis.

A national workshop on ‘Innovation in traditional agriculture for sustaining humani ty’ was held at Pantvarsity on 29-30 Aug, 2017. Organized by the Uttarakhand Chapter of Asian Agri-History Foundation, situated in the College of Agriculture of the university, the workshop was graced by the presence of Dr Y.L. Nene, the famous plant pathologist, as chief guest, who is also the Chairman Emeritus of Asian Agri-History Foundation. The inaugural session was presided over by Dr J. Kumar, Vice-Chancellor. The speakers of the four technical sessions included Dr S.P. Beniwal, founder trustee of the foundation and freelance international consultant in agricultural

research, innovation systems and development; Padma Shri Subhash Palekar, Advisor to Government of Andhra Pradesh for Zero Budget Natural Farming; Shri Vijay Jardhari, veteran activist of Beej Bachao Andolan from Uttarakhand; Shri Gadde Satish Babu, an outstanding organic farmer using traditional agriculture practices of India; and Shri Tara Chand Belji, a progressive experienced farmer of Madhya Pradesh, disseminating innovative techniques of traditional agriculture at a large scale.

A national seminar on 'Bee-keeping awareness, motivation and skill development among farmers' was organized during 19-20 Aug, 2017, on the occasion of World Honey-bee Day. The programme was organized by Integrated Bee-keeping Development Centre, financed by National Bee Board, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare of Government of India. The chief guest of the function, Dr J. Kumar, VC, inaugurated the seminar. The Project Co-ordinator of the All India Coordinated Research Project on Honey-bee and Pollinators of the ICAR, New Delhi, and other scientists highlighted the importance of honey-bee not only for honey but also for pollination and for other by-products like pollens, royal jelly, nectar etc. About 200 farmers participated in the seminar.

A national symposium on 'Innovation in horticulture: Production to consumption' was organized on 14 Sept 2017 in the conference hall of College of Agriculture of the university. The conference organized jointly by the Departments of Horticulture and Vegetable Science of College of Agriculture was inaugurated by the then Vice-Chancellor, Dr J. Kumar. In the conference, Dr A. Patnayak, Director of Vivekanand Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan, Almora; and Dr Vishal Nath, Director, National Research Centre on Litchi, Muzaffarpur, (Bihar), also participated, besides about 300 scientists from different institutes and universities of India.

Dr J. Kumar, VC, presided over the two sessions in the seminar. The famous social worker, Shri Ashok Beri; Dr Mahesh Sharma, expert on the philosophy; and Shri Prem Badakoti, Vice President of Uttaranchal Utthan Parishad, were also present, besides a number of followers of the two great personalities of India.

A Pear Review Team of Indian Counc i l of Agr icul tural Research visited Pantvarsity during 5-6 Sept. 2017. Its plan was to review and monitor the utilization of development grant given by the council in th 12 Five-Year Plan for 5 continuous years for improving the quality of agricultural education. The 6-member team headed by Dr Kusumakar Sharma, former Assistant Director- General (HRD), ICAR, as Chairman, included Dr K.L. Khurana, Principal Scientist, ICAR, as Member-Secretary, and Dr S. Rajan, Director, CISH, Kakori; Prof. Rajendra Singh, Associate Dean, IIT, Kharagpur; Shri S.K. Sharma, Finance & Account Officer, ICAR; and Shri Kumar Rajesh, Under Secretary (E&M), ICAR, as members. The team visited various colleges, directorates, research centres, university library and other offices, and viewed different facilities developed and equipments purchased from the development grant.

A training programme for French students, which included, Ms Ines Tridon De Roy and Ms Coline Boucher from Home Science; Pautet Emilie of Veterinary Science; and Simon Elisa Agathe Cloe, Collange Mathilde Sonia, Candaele Emerick Yvan, of College of Basic Sciences and Humanities. This visit was planned under exchange programme of students between eplefpa de la lozere, France, and Pantnagar University, organized from 27 July to 25 Aug, 2017. During the training, the French students were introduced to education programme underway especially in the three faculties, besides the entire university. Exposure visits were also organized to various food industries in the nearby places. The visitors also participated in the Independence Day programme organized in the university on 15 Aug, 2017. On 25 August, a valedictory programme was organized, that was attended by Dr J. Kumar, VC, wherein the visitors shared their experiences.

Dr Y.L. Nene, former Deputy Director-General, International Crops, Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), one of the first faculty members to have been appointed in Pantvarsity in 1960, the first Head of the Department of Plant Pathology and inventor of Khaira disease of rice, and currently Emeritus Chairman, Asian Agri-History Foundation interacted with the students of the university in the evening of 30 Aug, 2017. Earlier Dr Nene and Mrs Prabha Nene planted a sapling of camphor tree in the premises of Dr Y.L. Nene Examination Hall, in College of Agriculture.

Patent for Renewable Fuel

The patent office of Government of India granted a patent to the university for an invention of novel hybrid renewable fuel blends of karanja oil ethanol for compression ignition engine. The inventors are Shri Veeraprasad Godugula, Dr Jayant Singh, Dr T.K. Bhattacharya and Dr M.P. Singh. This renewable fuel can be used in any diesel engine and it emits less greenhouse gases. This fuel is a mixture of ester and ethanol of karanja oil. The patent has been granted for 20 years from the date of filing, i.e. 25 Feb. 2008.

New soybean varieties

Scientists of Pantvarsity working under on-going All- India Co-ordinated Research Improvement Programme on Soybean evolved a promising variety of soybean, Pant Soybean 24 (PS 24) for northern plains of India. This variety was released by Central Varieties Release th Committee in its 77 meeting, held on 14-15 May. 2017. It was developed through conventional breeding from single cross of JS 335 and PS 1024, followed by pedigree method of breeding. PS 24, has sturdy determinate plant type with purple flower, tawny pubescence, yellow attractive seed-coat, brown hilum colour, narrow to ovate leaf shape and brown pod colour, besides it is free from lodging and shattering. It is resistant to yellow mosaic virus (YMV), and bacterial pustules, and moderately resistant to Rhizoetonia aerial blight. It has medium to bold seed size, having 40% protein and 20% oil. Its maturity duration is 113-120 days, and it possesses high-yield potential of 35q/ha.

In addi t ion, two other promising varieties of soybean, viz. Pant Soybean 21 and Pant Soybean 23, which were released by Uttarakhand State Variety Release Committee in 2015 for Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, were also notified in this meeting for general cultivation in these two states. These are the promising varieties resistant to YMV and bacterial pustules, with medium maturity and high-yield potential.

The nucleus seed production programme of these varieties has been initiated at NEB Crop Research Centre and Breeder Seed Production Centre for establishing the seed-production chain, so that the quality seeds of these improved varieties are made available to the soybean growers.

This conference was attended by 500 participants.

An essay competition was organized on ‘Produce more with less’ in which the students securing first, second and third ranks were awarded cash prize of Rs. 10,000, RS. 7,5000 and Rs. 5,000, respectively. KAU Smart Biobin

KAU smart bio-bin
Kerala Agricultural University developed a low-cost technology for the management of bio-solid kitchen waste in households, named ‘KAU Smart Bio-bin. Being aerobic, these units do not produce the green-house gas, methane. The bin developed at Department of Agricultural Microbiology, College of Horticulture, is designed for bio-solid waste management at households. It is a cylindrical bin of 3¾ feet height and 1½ feet diameter, made of stainless steel coin mesh. There is an inner ring of 3 feet height. The space between the two rings is filled with dry, fallen leaves. Coir pith-based inoculums, containing a consortium of bacteria and fungus, is applied between the layers of kitchen waste. The waste gets converted to compost within 45 to 60 days and it gets collected in the tray at the bottom of the unit. By segregating and managing the waste at source, instead of tying it in plastic bags and throwing in public places, the entire state will remain clean. This will be a real boon to the municipalities and corporations, as the burden of managing waste in a centralized manner will be far lessened.

Total 6.8 tonnes of bio-control agents (Pseudomonas fluorescens, Trichoderma viride, Beauveria bassiana, Verticillium lecanii, Metarhizium anisopl iae, Arbuscularmy corrhizal fungi and PGPR Mix-II), 2 tonnes of bio-fertilizers (Rhizobium, Azospirillum, Azotobacter, Psolubilizer, K-solubilizer and PGPR Mix-I) and 600 litres of composting inoculums were supplied to the farmers.

Directorate of Human Resource Development, LLUVAS in collaboration with Haryana State Council of Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology, Government of Haryana organized a workshop on “Capacity building of intellectual property rights” on 18 May, 2017. Dr M.B. Chetti, Assistant Director General (HRD), ICAR, inaugurated the event in which total of 100 young scientists and post-graduate students participated. Addressing on the occasion, Dr Chetti said that in the present days of globalization the issue of IPR has become very important. Other experts who delivered lectures in this workshop included Dr S. Maurya, Dr R. P. Yadav, Dr Rahul Taneja, Dr Bijay Sahu and Dr Renu Gupta. On this occasion, the university scientists who were facilitated for their patents were Dr R. D. Dr Pharande, Assistant Professor, Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Bombay Veterinary College, Parel, Mumbai, participated in 10 days training programme under ‘Sakura Science Plan Project’ during 20 to 29 Aug, 2017 at Azabu University, Japan. Total 28 participants from 20 Asian countries participated in this programme. Dr Pharande successfully completed the training and received the certificate of participation from the President, Azabu University, Japan.

The students of constituent colleges of the university, viz. Shri Ravi Tanwar from College of Dairy Technology, Udgir, secured first rank and Shri Sanjeev Khade from Dairy Technology College, Warud, nd secured second rank in 22 All-India Entrance Examination for PG Admissions – 2017 conducted by the ICAR, New Delhi. A round-table summit on “Quality parameters for an edible egg and its importance in human diet”, was organized at KNP College of Veterinary Science, Shirwal on 3 July, 2017 to create awareness about the nutritive value of eggs, importance of eggs in human diet and its quality parameters. The round-table was chaired by Dr Vijay Makheja, Executive Committee, Poultry Federation of India; Dr A. S. Ranade, University Head, Department of Poultry Science, MAFSU, Nagpur; Dr Pradip Naik, M/s DSM Nutritional Products, Shri Vinay Hastak, National QA Head, M/s McDonalds; and Dr Javeed Mulani, M/s Vista Foods; and Dr A. S. Bannalikar, Chairman of the function and Associate Dean, KNP College of Veterinary Science, Shirwal. Dr Mhakheja gave presentation on “Overview of egg industry and its role in protein security”. He informed through scientific literature that egg cholesterol does not affect human health or blood cholesterol levels. Dr A. S. Ranade delivered a talk on “Quality of an egg". Dr Pradip Naik gave presentation on “Why is egg-yolk colour so important”.

Patent Awareness Programme

Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur organized a workshop on “Patent awareness programme” at Hi-technical hall of the college on 21 July, 2017 at 11.00 am, under the guidance of Dr N. P. Dakshinkar, Dean, Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur. During the lecture Shri Borkar, Assistant Controller of Patents and Designs, explained about the importance of filing patent, copyright, trademark, information on filing of patents, forms to be filled and the fees required for it. He narrated the examples of various patents filed by individuals and firms, and the revenue earned by them. During the address, Dr Dakshinkar, Dean, informed that in the coming days the contribution of the institutes will be judged by the number of patents filed, and he encouraged the faculty members and students to gain thorough knowledge about patent filing.

Fisheries Federations in Vidarbha

The College of Fishery Science, Nagpur was bestowed with the responsibility of “Preparation of Action Plan for Fisheries Development of Vidarbha”, by the Vidarbha Development Board, Nagpur. In this regard, a workshop on “Status of fisheries cooperatives in Vidarbha” was organized at COFS, Nagpur on 28 Aug, 2017. The Chair persons and Secretaries of the District Fisheries Federations of all the 11 districts of Vidarbha participated in the workshop. Shri Prakash Lonare, Chairman, Vidarbha Fisheries Cooperatives Federation, Nagpur; Dr Kapil Chandrayan, Expert Member, VDB, Nagpur; and Shri A. R. Deshmukh, Joint Director, VDB, Nagpur were present on this occasion. Shri S. W. The constituent veterinary colleges of the university celebrated World Rabies Day on 28 Sept. 2017. On this occasion, Rabies Awareness Rallies and Free Anti-Rabies Vaccination Camps were organized under National Service Scheme of colleges.
During the Awareness Rally, slogans on prevention and precautions to avoid the zoonotic disease Rabies were raised by the NSS volunteers. On this occasion a Free Anti-Rabies Vaccination camp was organized at village Hingana, Nagpur. Students of the KNP College performed different rabies awareness street plays to create awareness among the villagers regarding rabies at village Jawale, (Tal. Khandala, district Satara).

Vishwanatha, VC, MPKV, Rahuri also visited the stall and discussed the different activities carried out by the college. The ICAR’s 10 days short course on ‘Strategies for containment of anti-microbial resistance’ was organized by Department of Veterinary Microbiology, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, of the university from 13 to 22 Nov. 2017. The inauguration was held on 13 Nov. 2107. Dr V. S. Tomar, VC, JNKVV, Jabalpur was the chief guest of the function, Dr Dharmendra Verma, Director, State Forest Research Institute, Jabalpur, was the guest of honour and Prof. P. D. Juyal, VC, NDVSU, presided over the function. There were 25 participants in the course. Total 17 lectures were delivered by the guests, dignitaries and faculty members. Six practical demonstrations and hands-on-training were performed by the participants. Total 6 teams of participants visited National and State level institutes. Valedictory function was organized on 22 Nov. 2017, Dr A. D. N. Bajpai, former VC, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, was the chief guest. The 10-days training programme was concluded with the remark that the global threat of anti-microbial resistance can be combated only by the judicial and prudential use of antibiotics and alternative therapies such as phage therapy , herbal drugs etc.

Successful Management of Whitefly in Cotton

Management of whitefly in cotton
A special campaign for the management of whitefly was initiated by PAU by adopting IPM strategy. Under this strategy, initially whitefly population was critically monitored and managed on alternative host plants, viz. potato, cucurbits, okra as well as on weeds. The farmers were advised about the recommended Bt cotton varieties, timely sowing, nutrient management and clean cultivation, as well as application of suitable pesticide as per the requirement. To educate the farmers, 500 scouts were engaged by Department of Agriculture, Punjab. Extensive trainings were provided by the university to these scouts for effectively monitoring the pest population as well as guiding the farmers. In this direction 9 districts, 105 blocks and 5280 villagelevel training camps were also organized. Under the chairmanship of Dr B S Dhillon, VC, six meetings of Inter-state Consultative and Monitoring Committee for whitefly on cotton were held at Bathinda and Abohar.

The university released 5 varieties of field crops during this period. These include wheat (Unnat PBW 343, Unnat PBW 550 and PBW 1 Zn), oats (OL 11) and berseem (BL 43). Salient features of these varieties are given below.
PBW 343 Wheat
Unnat PBW 343 (PBW 723): It is a bread wheat variety, released for cultivation in the North- Western Plains Zone of India, including Punjab. It was developed through MABB (Marker- Assisted Backcross Breeding). It’s average grain yield is 23.2 q/acre. It is resistant to yellow and brown rusts.
PBW 550 Wheat
Unnat PBW 550 (PBW 761): It is a rustresistant variety developed through Marker Assisted Selection. Its average grain yield is 23.0 q/acre. It is resistant to yellow and brown rusts. It escapes terminal heat stress.
PBW 1 Zn Wheat
PBW 1 Zn (HPBW 01): It is a bread wheat variety released for cultivation in North-Western Plains Zone of India, including Punjab. It is the first bio-fortified wheat variety released at national level. It recorded on an average 40.6 ppm grain zinc concentration, which was 5.0 ppm higher than of the check PBW 621. Its average grain yield is 22.5 q/acre. It is resistant to yellow and brown rusts.

The VIII-Annual Group Meet of AINRP on Onion and Garlic was organized by the SKNAU, Jobner and Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, Rajguru Nagar, Pune at Jaipur during 1-2 July, 2017. Dr A. K. Singh, DDG (Hort.); Dr G. Kalloo, former DDG (Hort) and Dr T. Janakiram, ADG (Hort),
ICAR; and Dr P. S. Rathore, VC, were the key speakers in inaugural session. Six technical sessions on general and interactive session, Crop Improvement session, Crop Production session, Crop Protection session, Scientists-Farmers interaction session including the plenary session. These were attended by 77 scientists from 23 different centres. Varietal Release Committee indentified and approved two varieties of rabi onion viz. Sel. 153-1 (OSR-1347) red onion variety from IARI for release in Zone II (Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, J&K, Jammu and Punjab) and Col. 819 (OSR-1344) red onion variety from NHRDF is identified for release in Zone II and Zone V (Gujarat and Maharashtra) for rabi season.

The XXIV Annual Group Meeting of All-India Coordinated Research Project on Rapeseed and Mustard was organized by the university during 3-5 Aug, 2017 at RARI, Durgapura, Jaipur. The meeting was attended by 150 scientists across the country. In the inaugural session Dr S.K. Chaturvedi, ADG (Oilseeds), ICAR; Dr P.S. Rathore, VC, SKNAU; Dr V.K. Yadav, Director Research, SKNAU; and Dr P.K. Rai, Director, DRMR, Bharatpur were the key speakers. Dr D.K. Yadav, ADG (Seeds), ICAR; also attended the seed meeting in the afternoon session on the second day. Three newly developed rapeseed varieties viz. RH-0725 for un-irrigated area; CS-2800-1-2-3-5-1 for saline conditions, and PDZ-1 for high-quality were identified and approved by Varietal Release Committee for different agro- climatic conditions, including north Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu. The AICRP Centre in IARI, New Delhi and BHU, Varanasi were awarded ‘Best Centre’.

This course was sponsored by Department of Horticulture, Government of Rajasthan, under National Horticulture Mission. Total 25 youths from various districts of Rajasthan participated in this training programme.

An exhibition stall was put up by the university in Global Rajasthan Agri-tech Meet-2017 (GRAM-2017) at Kota during 24 -26 May, 2017. The low-water-requiring technologies developed by the SKRAU scientists, including crop varieties, were highlighted in the exhibition.

Release of New Varieties

Maize Composite (JMC 3)

Maize (JMC- 3)
Jammu Maize Composite-3 has yellow grain, distinguishable through its morphological features such as small leaf angle, semidrooping leaf, canico-cylindrical ears, and semiflint yellow grains. The variety has average potential yield of 50-60 q/ha. It takes 130-135 days to mature under mid-hill ecology of Jammu region.

Mango (Selection-5)

Mango (Selection- 5)
Selection-5 (Jammu Mango) was evolved from the mango tree of seedling origin. It flowers in the third week of February, with full bloom in the first week of March. It is moderately resistant to mango malformation at flowering stage and has higher fruit set (14.66 %) with 446.75 fruits per tree, and which yields to 85 q/ha at a spacing of O 10 x 10 m. It has total soluble solids 18.91 Brix and 14.68 % total sugars. This selection is also tolerant to drought during fruit set and fruit development, which results in large fruit size and higher yield. Therefore, it is suitable for cultivation under rainfed or kandi areas of Jammu subtropics.

Broccoli (Jammu Broccoli-07)

Broccoli variety (Jammu Broccoli- 07) is a selection from KTS-1, maturing in 75-80 days. The variety is suitable for all zones of the state, particularly sub-tropical conditions of Jammu, where it has adapted to produce seed also. It produces dark green-coloured curds weighing 120-140g and it produces 7-8 lateral shoots weighing 50-70g per plant after harvesting of main curd. The variety has yield potential of 180-200 q/ha. Plants show dark green leaves with wavy margins. It is moderately resistant to the prevalent diseases and pests.

Coriander (Jammu Coriander-07)

Coriander (J.C. -07)
Khushboo (Jammu coriander- 07) is highyielding selection of coriander from indigenous material. Its leaves are dark green, and it has rich fragrance. It is late bolting and multi-cut variety, with yield potential up to 150q/ha. This variety can easily be distinguished by its semispreading plant type with dark green leaves. The crop is ready for first cut after 35-40 days of sowing, giving at least 4 cuts within a cropping period of 100-110 days.

Okra (Jammu Okra-05)

The variety Seli Special (Jammu okra- 05) was developed through hybridization (Varsha Uphaar x VRO-05-01). Its fruits are dark green, medium in size; and the fruits remain tender for vegetable purpose for even 4-6 days after attaining the optimum stage. The plants are

medium in height (90-100 cm) with short rd intermodal distance. First flower appears at 3 to th 4 node, making it early fruit-bearing variety. The plants bear 25-30 fruits, with average fruit weight of 10-15 g. It has yield potential of 100- 150 q/ha. Seli Special is field resistant to yellow vein mosaic virus.

Fenugreek (Jammu Fenugreek -07)

Fenugreek var. Kasuri Supreme (Jammufenugreek- 07) was selected from local indigenous material. Its plant height is 45-60 cm; it is dark green, with broad-lobed leaves. It is bushy type and is ready for first cut after 30-35 days of sowing. It is a multi-cut variety, giving 4-5 cuts in rabi season, each at 25-30 days interval. It shows average yield potential of 200-250 q/ha. It is moderately resistant to the prevalent diseases and pests.

Spinach beet (Jammu Spinach Beet-07)

C-13 (Jammu spinach beet- 07) is a selection from 13 diverse genotypes collected from different parts of the country. It is a multi-cut, short-duration variety with smooth dark green leaves. The plant type is erect, with plant height of 35 - 45 cm. The crop is ready for first harvest after 25-30 days of sowing, and the subsequent cuts are taken after 20-25 days. For green leaves, 4–5 cuts can be taken within a span of 120–130 days. It has average yield potential of 250-300 q/ha. The variety is moderately tolerant to blight and Alternaria leaf spot.

Jayakumar, Minister for Fisheries, inaugurated National workshop “Ponshrimp 17” on the theme “Responsible nursery phase adoption in shrimp farming systems: technology testimonials and policy” at the FCRI, Ponneri on 27 May, 2017. Shri Jayakumar in his inaugural address briefed about framing of guideline for shrimp farming in the inland regions and establishment of aquaculture estates for promoting aquaculture activities in the state. Mr P. Benjamin, Minister for Rural Industries; Dr S. Felix, VC, Smt. E. Sundaravalli, I.A.S., District Collector, Thiruvallur district; Shri P. Balaraman, MLA of Ponneri constituency; Dr R. Jayaraman, Director, Coastal Aquaculture Authority; and Dr K.K. Vijayan, Director, Central Institute of Brackish Water Aquaculture, were also present on this occasion. In the technical session, presentations on various aspects of inland shrimp farming, were held. Total 120 participants including scientists, shrimp-hatchery operators, shrimp farmers, and research scholars attended the programme.

First Rank among Fisheries Universities to TNFU

In the ranking list for SAUs released by the ICAR recently, the TNFU ranked first among the fisheries universities in the country. The university, established during 2012 with one college and three centres is growing at a rapid pace and now it has five colleges and 20 centres under its umbrella to nurture.

The CCSHAU, Hisar has been bestowed upon the prestigious Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award-2016 in recognition of its landmark achievements in teaching, research and extension.

Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, presented this award to Prof. K.P. Singh, VC, at the award function organised on the occasion of foundation day of the ICAR in New Delhi on 16 July, 2017. The award carried a cheque of Rs 10 lakhs, a medal and a plaque.

Fulbright Fellowship for Scientists

Dr Chandra Sekhar Mukhopadhyay, Assistant Scientist of the School of Animal Biotechnology, was honoured with Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award (2016-17). Fulbright fellowship is awarded every year to selected scholars of over 125 nations under Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, for promoting cutting-edge research, quality teaching and international cultural exchange. As a part of this fellowship programme he spent 9 months at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa in the Laboratory of Prof. James Reecy. His research work aimed at statistical modelling of the uniparentally expressed genes, using whole genome-marker data in cattle. The work will be useful in identifying similar genes in our indigenous animals in Punjab and India.

The Soybean Research Centre and Pulse Research Centre of the university were awarded Certificate of Appreciation for the good work done in the last 5 decades, including development of a number of high-yielding varieties, and also the seed production of many varieties for supplying to various seed agencies or universities of public sector as well as to the farmers. The certificate of appreciation for the soybean research was given during the concluding session of the annual group meeting of All India Co-ordinated Research Projects on Soybean, held at Pantnagar on 5 May 2016. For pulses research it was given in the inaugural session of the annual general meeting of AICRPs on MuLLaRP and Arid Legume, held on 6 May 2017 at Pantnagar.

First Ranking in cleanliness to Pantvarsity

Pantnagar University was ranked first among the cleanest higher educational institutions in the country in the category of Government Institutions under ‘Swachhta Ranking-2017’ of Higher Educational Institutions. It was done by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. This award was given on 14 Sept 2017 by Shri Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of Human Resource Development, at a ceremony held at Ashok Hotel, New Delhi, in recognition to the efforts made by the university in making it a Smart Campus by ensuring waste management, saving water, saving electricity, and promoting cleanliness and hygiene.

Prizes in Mango Festival-2017

Pantnagar University bagged six prizes (5 first and 1second) in Mango Festival-2017, held at DeharaDun during 9 - 10 July, 2017. In the festival, one first prize was awarded for displaying maximum number (140) of mango varieties, under the category ‘Display of

Varieties’. The competition was also held for 5 mango varieties, viz. Pusa Arunima, Pusa Lalima, Pusa Shrestha, Pusa Surya and Arunika, under the category ‘Specific varieties of mango’. Out of these, Pantvarsity bagged first prizes for four varieties and second prize for one variety (Pusa Surya) for their excellent quality. The prizes were given by the Chief Minister, Horticulture Minister, Secretary Horticulture and Director Horticulture of Uttarakhand during the festival at DeharaDun.

Dr S.K. Kashyap, Professor and Head, Department of Agricultural Communication, College of Agriculture of the university was honoured with 'Bharat Ratna Dr C. Subramanyam Best Teacher Award-2016’ by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, for Social Science category. This award was given to him by Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, on the occasion of 89 foundation day of the council on 16 July, 2017 in a ceremony held at New Delhi.

Dr N.S. Jadaun, Professor and Head, Department of Surgery and Radiology, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, was honoured with Hari Om Ashram Trust Award of the ICAR for best research done, jointly with the scientists of Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, Bareilly. This award too was given by Shri Radha Mohan Singh, in the same ceremony of 89 foundation day of the ICAR.

Dr R.M. Srivastava, Associate Professor, Department of Entomology, College of Agriculture, received Best Presentation Award in this 19 International Conference on Advances in Entomology, organized by Word Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology, The USA, held at Vienna, Austria, during 21-22 June, 2017. The certificate of this award was received in July 2017. Scientists of 45 countries participated in this conference.

Dr S.K. Patil, VC, was conferred the Extension Leadership Award by Indian Council of Food and Agriculture at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi on 5 Sept, 2017 on the occasion of 10 Global Agr i cul ture Leader ship Summit-2017. This award was given by H.E. Shri Kapatan Singh Solanki, Governor of Haryana; and Shri Kenneth Quinn, World Food Prize winner. Dr Raman Singh, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, and Shri Brijmohan Aggrawal, Agriculture Minister of Chhattisgarh complimented Dr S.K. Patil, for this honor.

Dr Patil received this award for his progressive thinking and for steering the university towards academic excellence. Under his leadership, Krishi Vigyan Kendras were developed as model district extension units facilitating the farmers in adopting improved technologies for better productivity, profitability and sustainability, enabling them to best KVK award by the ICAR, continuously since the last 4 years, and eight research projects of the university bagged the best project award from the ICAR due to his efforts.

Prof. A.K. Mishra, former VC of Maharashtra Animal and Fisheries Science University, Nagpur, who recently joined back at his post of Professor in the Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences of the university, was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Pantvarsity by an order of the H.E. K.K. Paul, Governor of Uttarakhand and Chancellor of Pantvarsity, issued on 25 Sept. 2017. Dr Mishra took over the charge of his duties the next day. He has been appointed for a period of 6 months or till the appointment of a regular Vice-Chancellor, whichever is earlier.
