A.H., welcomed the Director-General and the Directors, and briefed about Teaching, Research and Extension activities of the college and its significant achievements.
In his address, he highlighted the goal set by Prime Minister of India of "Doubling farmers’ income by 2022", and urged the faculty members to work hard in hand with the farming communities. He also released a booklet on Backyard Poultry Farming written in Mizo language and College Profile booklet. Earlier Dr S.V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR Centre NEH Region, briefed about the farmers of Mizoram. Speaking on the programme, Dr Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR, NRC on Mithun, (Nagaland) advised the students to focus on their studies.

Soil Health
The Society for Promotion of Agricultural Research and Knowledge (SPARK) of Cornell University visited DRPCAU, Pusa during 9-10 Aug, 2017 to have a project on Soil Health. The objectives of the project are: (i) establish a relationship with the university and draw the contours of a soil-health collaborative effort in the context of Tata-Cornell Initiatives (TCI); (ii) establish a basic-soil-health laboratory facility at the Pusa campus; and (iii) discuss research ideas on soil health that would strengthen the existing as well as potential future field research efforts. The team included Dr Harold M. van Es, International Professor, Faculty Fellow, Atkinson Centre for Sustainability, Soil and Crop Section, Cornell University; Dr R. K. Gupta , President, SPARK; and Ms Kavya, Post- graduate student at Cornell University. On 9 Aug,
2017 the team visited the experimental plots at HQ and TCA, Dholi. Professor Harold delivered a seminar on “A Soil Health Assessment and Management Framework” at Vidyapati

and informed the house that bio-safety norms in India are most stringent and GM varieties are thoroughly tested for safety assessment during their developmental stages. Dr N.C. Patel, Vice
Chancellor, said that we should have a comprehensive agricultural policy, including GM crops.
Dr B. Sesikeran Chairman, RCGM; Dr Vibha Ahuja, Chief General Manager, BCIL; and Dr Celia Chalam, Principal Scientist, NBPGR, New Delhi delivered the lectures during the workshop. The other distinguished speakers from Gujarat included Dr R.S. Fougat, Professor & Head, Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, AAU, Anand; Dr Chandermohan Singh, DGR-ICAR, Junagadh; Dr Rajesh Patkar, MSU, Baroda; Dr Pradeep. K. Agarwal, CSMCRI, Bhavnagar and Dr R.S. Tomar, JAU, Junagadh. Nearly 120 participants attended the workshop, which included scientists and teachers from Anand Agricultural University; other State Agricultural Universities of Gujarat; faculty members from MSU, Baroda; SPU, V. V. Nagar; National institutes like CSMCRI, Bhavnagar; DMAPR, Boriavi; officials of State Department of Agriculture, Gujarat; besides the seed-company representatives and farmers. The interface meeting was organized on 20 July 2017 with starch and distillery industries, to discuss the need of maize industry and challenges faced by them. The representatives from M/s Sayaji Maize Products, Ahmedabad; M/s Roquette Ridhdhi Sidhdhi, Ahmadabad and M/s Tata Foundation, Dahod participated in the meeting and discussed about the problems in maize procurement and basic needs of maize for industrial purpose. The Director, IIMR, Ludhiana specified the key points for future research need in maize useful for the industry. At the completion of the session, Dr S.L. A plenary session was held at Conference hall of Veterinary College, AAU, Anand, chaired by Dr N.C. Patel, VC, who expressed that Dr Daan looked highly satisfied with his visit to the AAU. He
assured that the AAU can render support to South African universities in specific areas such as development of bio-fertilizers based on microbes, soil-testing, rain-water harvesting, microirrigation,
devising farm machineries, use of renewable energy, germ-plasm exchange, etc. Dr Patel also laid emphasis on venturing into collaborative research and possible exchange
programme for the students as well as for staff. Dr Daan was especially impressed by the students’ involvement at Vidya Dairy, Anand. The media persons took press conference of Dr N.C. Patel,
and of Dr Daan, Deputy Director-General, South Africa about the objective of the visit and the future plan of action by AAU, Anand with South African universities.

sessions in the seminar. The famous social worker, Shri Ashok Beri;
Dr Mahesh Sharma, expert on the philosophy; and Shri Prem
Badakoti, Vice President of Uttaranchal Utthan Parishad, were also
present, besides a number of followers of the two great personalities
of India.

Tropics (ICRISAT), one of the first faculty members to have been appointed in Pantvarsity in 1960, the first Head of the Department of Plant Pathology
and inventor of Khaira disease of rice, and currently Emeritus Chairman, Asian Agri-History Foundation interacted with the students of the university in the evening of 30 Aug, 2017. Earlier Dr Nene and
Mrs Prabha Nene planted a sapling of camphor tree in the premises of Dr Y.L. Nene Examination Hall, in College of Agriculture.
Patent for Renewable Fuel
The patent office of Government of India granted a patent to the
university for an invention of novel hybrid renewable fuel blends of
karanja oil ethanol for compression ignition engine. The inventors are
Shri Veeraprasad Godugula, Dr Jayant Singh, Dr T.K. Bhattacharya
and Dr M.P. Singh. This renewable fuel can be used in any diesel engine and it emits less greenhouse gases. This fuel is a mixture of
ester and ethanol of karanja oil. The patent has been granted for 20
years from the date of filing, i.e. 25 Feb. 2008.
