Technology for Management of Fusarium Wilt/Panama Wilt of Banana

Typical symptoms of Fusarium
wilt/ Panama wilt of banana
The most serious disease of banana , identified as Fusarium wilt or Panama wilt of banana, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense race I & II (FOC) , is widespread in Vaishali region. A majority of the tall varieties like Malbhog (40-80%), Kothia (10-26%) and Alpan (10-16.5) grown in the area are highly susceptible to this disease. Dr S.K. Singh, Senior Scientist (Plant Pathology) & PI, AICRP (Fruits ) , working on management of this disease for the last 8 years has finally been successful in developing management strategies against the disease. These were released during the 4th Group meeting of All-India Co-ordinated Research Project on Fruits at IIHR, Bangalore during 4-7 Jan. 2017. The technology involves the use of disease-free suckers after dipping in 0.2% carbendazim for 45 min., followed by soil drenching (0.2%) @2-3 litres /plant at 0, 2 and 4 months after planning and carbendazim injection @ 3 ml of 2% solution at 3, 5 and 7 months after planting. However, bio-control agents, i.e. Trichoderma viride (@ 10 g/sucker 3 times) used in soil has also been found effective against Panama wilt, and therefore may be included in the integrated diseases management schedule in organic system.
