The ICAR-sponsored Summer School programme on Dairy Business Management in 21st Century was organized by Dairy Business Management Department, SMC College of Dairy Science during 6-25 Jul. 2015. Dr AK. Makwana, Associate Professor, was Course Director, whereas Shri K.C. Kamani, Assistant Professor, was Co-course Director of the Summer School. Total 23 participants from the SAUs of Gujarat, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra , Punjab, Rajasthan and Tripura attended this summer school.

National Fish Farmers' Day was observed jointly by the KVK, Devataj and the RRC, Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Anand on 10 Jul. 2015 at Aniket Farmers' hostel. Dr N.C. Patel, VC; Shri N.R. Patel, Deputy Director of Fisheries, Government of Gujarat; Dr K.B. Kathiria, Director (Research); Dr AM. Thaker, Principal & Dean, College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry and; Dr Sujata Bhatt, Head, Bio-Science Department, S.P. University; graced the occasion. Seven fish farmers from Anand and Kheda districts of Gujarat were felicitated, and two publications invernacular language were released on this occasion.

AI Technicians' Training by ARGO under RKVY

The Department of Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology & Obstetrics (ARGO), College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, AAU, Anand organized specialized fresh AI Technicians in-house training programme for 6 weeks under the RKVY scheme of Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of Gujarat through the GCMMF, Anand, during 6 Jul. - 14 Aug. 2015. Total 25 participants from Panchamrut (Godhra), Sursagar (Surendra nagar) and Sarhad (Kutch) Milk unions took part in the training. After completing the 6 weeks of class-room training, the participants are placed with experienced service providers of the respective Milk unions for further 6 weeks field training, before they are awarded certificate and placed independently on AI Centre for service to the farmers. The training was very effective, interactive and meaningful in improving the skill, confidence and knowledge in the subject, as per the results of periodical evaluation and feedback received from the participants and their sponsors. Dr AJ. Dhami, Prof & Head, ARGO acted as Course Co-ordinator and Dr M.T. Panchal, Professor, as course Director.

Workshop on Package of Practices for Crops

The university and the Department of Agriculture, Government of Assam jointly organized a workshop on Package of Practices Practices for Crops on 21 Dec. 2015 and recommended 53 crop varieties including 27 AAU-bred varieties of rice, greengram, blackgram, lentil, toria, sesame, jute, lathyrus (forage) and amaranth and 66 other production technologies for agronomical and horticultural crops for the state of Assam.

ICAR- sponsored Winter School organized

An ICAR-sponsored Winter School on Advances in Organic Production System and Conservation Agriculture was organized by the Department of Agronomy, during 24 Sept. 14 Oct. 2015, in which 19 agricultural scientists and teachers from all over the country participated. Dr K.M. Bujarbaruah, VC, inaugurated the Winter School and highlighted the importance of organic farming and conservation agriculture with special reference to North East India. Eminent scientists of national institutes and officers of Government of Assam delivered guest lectures, in addition to resource persons from the university.

SAC meeting of DBT - AAU Centre

The 8th Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting of the DBT-MU Centre was held under the chairmanship of Dr K.M. Bujarbaruah, VC. The meeting stressed upon development of the centre as a full-fledged institute of international repute. Itemphasized the need for research on organic agriculture. The centre has funded 11 innovative projects to various institutes of N.E.lndia. Meanwhile, patentable products and processes have been developed in two such projects.

The meeting also recommended for cataloguing the plants and microbes of Kaziranga National Park, repository to store microbes and plant samples, showcasing technology and starting biotechnology based ventures.

1st Convocation

The first convocation of the university was held on 19 Dec. 2015 at Collage of Agriculture. Shri Ram Naik, Chancellor and Governor, gave the presidential remarks and distributed medals to the recipients. Dr S.Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR, New Delhi, was the chief guest. He ensured the support of the ICAR, New Delhi, for the new and developing university and expressed satisfaction in the planned development of university and successful conduction of the convocation. During the programme two degrees of UG programme of College of Agriculture and College of Horticulture were given to 46 students.

The university has made a road-map of agricultural research for the development of location-specific need based technologies with the help of the ICAR institutes for the Bundelkhand region. So far 16 ICAR Institutes namely IIPR, IGFRI, IIMR, CSWRI, CIRG, CISH, IIOR, NRCSS, IIWBR, IIVR, DRR, DSR; NRC for Citrus and Pomegranate, CRIDA, CIAH, and DRMR have been requested.

The Day was celebrated enthusiastically at the university on 4 Dec. 2015. The College of Agriculture, as a part of its Golden Jubilee Year lecture series, organized A special lecture to commemorate the day. Dr S.S. Kanwar, Director of Research, was the chief guest. He underlined the importance of providing access to resources to the farm women for increasing the opportunities for them. Dr Kanwar said that farm women, backbone of rural economy, need greater recognition.
Dr P.K. Mehta, Dean, College of Agriculture, as guest of honour, informed that regular motivation of school students has made the girl students to adopt agriculture as a profession. Presently girl students have outnumbered the boys in the college.
Dr Usha Kiran Chopra, former Principal Scientist, IARI, New Delhi, as a keynote speaker, emphasized that farm women need ownership of land, education, training, legal rights and access to credit, which can accelerate farm growth in the country.

13th Convocation

The university hosted its thirteenth convocation on 1 Nov. 2015. Shri Acharya Dewrat, Chancellor and Governor, Himachal Pradesh; and Shri B.B.L. Butail, Speaker, Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha graced the occasion. Three hundred and forty six Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc. degrees were conferred (12 Ph.D., 112 M.Sc. and 222 B.Sc. degrees), and 212 students (5 Ph.D., 65 M.Sc. and 142 B.Sc. degree recipients) received their degrees in person.

The Governor conferred all the degrees and honour certificates. For the first time the university conferred the degrees with QR coding. Shri B.B.L. Butail, decorated 22 brilliant students with gold medals. In his address he exhorted the scientists to help farmers with useful technologies to make them prosperous which will in tum benefit the State. He also congratulated all the degree recipients

and called upon them to work dedicatedly for strengthening the state and put their knowledge for improving the farming activities there. He also spoke on the women empowerment and expressed happiness that the girl students outnumbered the boys at the university.
Dr K.K. Katoch, VC, welcomed the dignitaries and Informed about the various achievements in the areas of academics, research and extension education. Members of Senate, BoM, and Academic Council, officers of local administration and parents of the degree recipients were also present on the occasion. The Governor also planted a sapling of rudraksh near the auditorium.

Dr Y.S.R. HORTICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, TADEPALLIGUDEM

New Coriander Variety

The coriander variety LCC-219 developed at Horticultural Research Station, Lam, distt. Guntur, was recommended for release as national variety for cultivation in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Telangana states during the 26th group meeting of AICRP on spices at the IISR, Khozikode during 4-7 Oct. 2015. It is suitable for rainfed (12.0-14.3 q/ha) and irrigated conditions (12.0-17.5 q/ha) having high essential oil content (0.54%).

Training on Coconut Hybridization

A training programme on Hybridization in Coconut was conducted during 2-7 Nov. 2015 By Horticultural Research Station, Ambajipeta at KVK, Venkataramannagudem, with emphasis on development of practical skills for successful production of coconut hybrids to 30 rural unemployed youth to earn livelihood. Participants were trained on various steps involved in hybridization such as selection of elite palms, emasculation, bagging, collection of pollen, storage and pollination etc., along with production and protection technologies of coconut.

The KVK, Pandirimamidi, organized a Kisan Sammelan on 21 Nov. 2015 at Pandirimamidi to create awareness among the tribal farmers on advanced technologies in agriculture, horticulture and allied sectors. Smt. Kothapalli Geetha, Member of Parliament, Araku; Smt. T. Ratna Bai, Member of Legislative Council; Smt. Vantala Rajeshwari, Member of Legislative Assembly, Rampachodavaram; Dr B.M.C. Reddy, VC; Shri KVN. Chakradara Babu (lAS), Project Officer, ITDA, Rampachodavaram; Dr R.V.S.K. Reddy, Director of Extension; line department officials; public representatives and about 850 tribal farmers from agency mandals of East Godavari district participated in this programme. Smt. Kothapalli Geetha, MP, was the chief guest of this programme, inaugurated the exhibition and distributed sprayers to the tribal farmers.

Visit to Rovan Cyclone-Affected Areas

Two teams of scientists along with the officials of Department of Horticulture visited Rovan cyclone-affected mandals of Chittoor and Kadapa districts during Nov. 2015. It was observed that in tomato and potato most of the fields were infected with blight, fruit rot and tuber rot diseases . In brinjal and

cabbage fruit rot and head rot were noticed. In tomato most of the fields were infected with wilt, blight and fruit rot diseases. Papaya was severely infected with viral diseases, fruit rot, anthracnose, foot rot and powdery mildew diseases. Chrysanthemum and tuberose were infected with flower rot, and tuber rot diseases, and were completely unsuitable for marketing. Bitter gourd and ridge gourd were infected with fruit rot and leaf spot diseases. Water-logging was noticed in most of the orchards. Suitable remedial measures were suggested to the farmers to save the standing crop.

School of Public Health and Zoonoses of the university organized a three days International Workshop in collaboration with University of Sydney, Australia, during 26-28 Nov. 2015. The workshop was organized as a part of a collaborative One Health project between the two universities, so as to improve the health of livestock and people at animal human interface. Prof Michael Ward, Chairman, Veterinary Public Health; and Dr Navneet Dhand, Sub-Dean Research Development and Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Epidemiology, Sydney; trained the university staff and students in using geographic information system and conducting spatial data analyses for research.

Book on Animal Welfare

Dr Kirti Dua, In-charge, Wildlife Centre and Professor of Veterinary Medicine published a book "Animal Welfare, Ethics and Jurisprudence." The book provides salient facts and fundamentals of animal-welfare ethics and jurisprudence to veterinary students and practitioners in a simplified way.

29th Convocation

The 29th convocation of the university was organized on 17 Nov. 2015 at the convocation ground in administrative block of the university. H.E. Shri Pranab Mukherjee, President of India, was the chief guest, whereas H.E. Dr Krishan Kant Paul, Governor of Uttarakhand and Chancellor, presided over the function. Shri Harish Rawat, Chief Minister, Uttarakhand, was the guest of honour and Dr Harak Singh Rawat, Agriculture Minister of state and; Shri Shatrughan Singh, Chief Secretary; were the special guests on the dais.
Shri Pranab Mukherjee in his convocation address congratulated the degree recipients and said that agricultural universities must become the focal points of agricultural growth and change. Describing agriculture as the mainstay of Indian economy, he said that it has always received top priority in our policy formulation, which resulted in green revolution and food security. The President warned against injudicious exploitation of resources, which lead to climate change and bio-diversity loss. He also emphasized on the balanced use of fertilizers, judicious use of water and crop-residue management, besides more and more production with less and less resources. He pointed out the poor ranking of India in Global Hunger Index 2015, and asked to improve the nutritional status of Indian population through forgotten nutrient-rich millets and bio-fortified plants.
Dr KK Paul in his presidential address, suggested inclusion of agriculture among the top priorities and tum it into a profitable business venture. He sought to harness the advantage of special hill crops and high-value products in specific niches in Uttarakhand. On this occasion Shri Harish Rawat exhorted the degree recipient to accept present-day challenges and work for the service of their society and the nation. He asked to increase the contribution of agriculture in the GDP of the country, by decreasing the pace of climate change, making agriculture Environment friendly, increasing the carbon content in the soil up to 2.5%, and use Of bio-diversity of Uttarakhand
for uplifting the economic condition of the farmers. He also underlined the necessity of erecting storage structures and processing plants in the hills for the production of agricultural crops. Dr Mangala Rai, VC, presented a report of the recent achievements of the university in the areas of teaching, research and extension.
In this convocation 1208 undergraduate, post-graduate and Ph.D. degrees were awarded to the students. The Chancellors' Gold Medal was given to Shri Krishna Murari, being the best undergraduate student. Beside 15 Vice-Chancellors' gold medals, 15 silver medals and 13 bronze medals were also given to the meritorious undergraduates. Six students were given different awards including Shri Puran Anand Adalkha Award, Saraswati Panda Award, Nagamma Shanta Bai Award, Dr Ram Shiromani Tiwari Award and Choudhary Charan Singh Smriti Pratibha Puraskar. On this occasion, the members of Board of Management and Academic Council of the University were also present.

The university signed a memorandum of understanding with National Agricultural Research Innovation Centre (NARIC) of Hungary on 19 Oct. 2015 for collaboration in research and education. The MoU was signed by Shri Pankaj Tiwari, Finance Comptroller, and Dr Attila Borovics, Director, NARIC, in the presence of Dr Mangala Rai, VC, and the Deans and Directors of the university besides Dr Mahesh K. Singh, Chief Advisor (Research & Innovation), NARIC. The two signatories exchanged their documents during the signing ceremony organized in the committee room of International School of Agriculture. The areas of collaboration will include scholarship to students, exchange of scientists, dual-degree programmes, creation of centre of excellence etc.

A memorandum of understanding was signed by the university with French Agricultural Professional and Vocational Institution (EPLEFPA Lozere, southern France), on 6 Nov. 2015. During a programme organized in International School of Agriculture, Shri Pankaj Tiwari, Finance Comptroller, on behalf of the university, and Mr Christophe Groell, India Network Co-ordinator, France's Agricultural Education, on behalf of French Institute, signed the MoU in the presence of Dr Mangala Rai, VC, and the Deans, Directors and other officers of the university, besides members Of French delegation. Under this MoU there will be exchange of students and academic staff, organization of study tours and setting-up of a special day (French day or Indian day) in each institution. The EPLEFPA, Lozere is a public professional and vocational institute, consisting of five institutions, offering courses in agriculture, food processing, aquaculture, water management, environmental protection, horse farming etc.

A memorial lecture on 'Innovative technologies of dry-land agriculture for global food security', under Dr C. Subramanyam Memorial Lecture Series, was delivered by Dr M.C. Saxena, Senior Advisor to DG, International Centre for Agriculture Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Gandhi Hall on 21 Nov. 2015 . A large number of faculty members, including Deans, Directors, officers and students were present. Dr Mangala Rai, VC, considered Dr Saxena as a befitting person to pay homage to a person like Dr C. Subramanyam, in whose name this memorial lecture series was introduced by the university.

Bhoomipoojan Ceremony of Polytechnic in Agro-Processing College building celebrated on 27 Dec. 2015 at the university by Shri Mohanbhai Kundariya, Minister of State for Agriculture, Department of Agriculture, Co-operation and Farmers' Welfare, Government of India; Shri Babubhai Bokhiria, Minister of Agriculture, Govemment of Gujarat; Shri Jasabhai Barad, Minister of Agriculture and Civil Aviation (State level) Government of Gujarat; and Dr A.R. Pathak, VC, in the presence of university officers, scientists and students. Shri Mohanbhai Kundariya laid emphasis on the need of agro-processing and value addition. Shri Babubhai Bokhiria emhasized establishment of agro- processing centre at all the talukas of Gujarat, to benefit our farmers with the processing technology as well as to create greater job opportunities to the students completing the diploma in agro-processing course.

Shri Babubhai Bokhiria, Minister of Agriculture, Government of Gujarat, performed Bhoomipujan and unveiled the inscription stone of new building to be constructed for College of Dairy Science, Amreli on 15 Oct. 2015 at Shedubhar Patiya, Amreli. The event was graced by Shri Ramanlal Vora, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment; Shri Dilip Sanghani Former Minister of Agriculture and; Prof. M.C. Varshneya, VC; Dr A.R. Pathak, VC, JAU, Junagadh and dignitaries of Amreli district were also present. Shri Babubhai Bokhiria highlighted the need of skilled manpower in dairy industry to meet the international standards of dairy production, processing and quality.

Taking a major leap in the field of Research, Education and Extension, the university signed MoU with Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai; National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal and National Research Centre on Camel, Jobner, Bikaner.
The university in proliferation of its objective of providing strong backbone in the areas of research, education and extension in the field of Veterinary, Dairy, Fisheries and allied sciences signed the MoUs for collaborative research and education.

The university witnessed history in the making, when Shri D.P. Kohli, Governor of Gujarat and Chancellor of the university, visited for interacting with the students and staff of the university regarding their choice of stream, choice of university, their future aspirations and other matters related to their academics, for which the students replied with utmost honesty and enthusiasm. He asked the students to remain honest in their approach to life.

The university organized Pashu Vigyan Mela on 24 Oct. 2015 at Kaorak village (dist. Kaithal). Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister, Haryana in his inaugural speech thanked Maj. Gen. (Dr) Shrikant, SM, VSM (Retd.), VC, for organizing this function and informed that due to shortage in land holdings in the villages, importance of animal husbandry has increased tremendously. He further said that establishment of small-scale industries at village level can generate opportunities for self-employment. He further announced the setting up of regional research station of the university at village Karorak. On this occasion, Maj. Gen (Dr) Shrikant, VC, said that there are ample opportunities in the field of animal husbandry, and people must adopt this as a mean for livelihood in the rural areas. Lots of efforts are being made by our university to train people in this field. He impressed upon improving the present condition of ponds in the villages, as examination of water of some of these ponds showed the presence of harmful pesticides and bacteria at high level.

The university also organized an exhibition on this occasion, In which recent research techniques were displayed by different departments. A large number of farmers visited the different stalls and were advised about different aspects of animal health and production. Some of the farmers doing innovative work In the field of animal husbandry were given prizes by the chief guest.

Free Rabies Vaccination Health Camp for Pets

The university organized a free rabies vaccination camp for pets, on the occasion of the foundation day of LUVAS on 29 Nov. 2015. Maj. Gen. (Dr) Shrikant, VC, was the chief guest of the function. He emphasized on the importance of vaccination and appealed to all the pet owners, especially dog lovers, to get their animals vaccinated against various diseases mainly rabies which is a very dreadful disease. He informed that there are a number of zoonotic diseases like mange, ringworm, salmonellosis, leptospirosis, and echinococcosis etc. that can be transmitted from infected animals to the humans.
In this camp more than 250 dogs were vaccinated against rabies.A large numbers of animals were treated for various ailments related to general medicine, surgery, and animal reproduction etc. Many animals were examined for eye, dental and skin problems; and appropriate treatments were prescribed by experts from different departments of the university. In this camp a large number of dog breeds like Roltweiler, Afgan bully, Labrador, German shepherd, Pug, Pitbull, Mastiff, Dalmatian, Duchshund and Boxer etc, were brought by the owners for health check-up.

Six animal ambulances were purchased from the grant of Rashtrya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), Government of Maharashtra for six Veterinary Colleges at Nagpur, Mumbai, Udgir, Parbhani, Shirwal and Akola. On the occasion of International Animal Rights day on 10 Dec. 2015 these ambulances were commissioned by Shri Eknathrao Khadse, Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries, Maharashtra State, at Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur. The ambulances are equipped with all facilities including hydraulic platform for carrying the large animals.

ScL-I), ICAR, New Delhi, was the chief guest of the function, Dr A.N. Sabalpara, Director of Research & Dean, PGS, was the guest of honour, and the function was honoured by special guest, Mr G.S. Mani, President of Golf Course Superintendents and Managers' Association of India, Kodaikanal Golf Club, Tamil Nadu. Turfgrass experts like Mr Satish Aparajit, retired Wing Commander (IAF), Gurgaon; Mr Pradeep Ganu, Managing Director, Hortus Consultant, Pune; Mr Karmveer Bhatt from Surat and; Dr Naresh Pancholi were also present on this occasion.

New Varieties

The university has taken a lead in the country in developing the first canola quality variety of raya, two new varieties of wheat and one variety of sunflower for general cultivation in Punjab.
  • Canola Raya RLC 3 : It is the first canola
    Raya RLC 3 (Canola)
    quality variety of raya in the country. It is a yellow seeded, medium tall variety which has been recommended for general cultivation in the state under timely sown irrigated conditions. It is resistant to white rust. Its average seed yield is 7.3 ql acre with 41.5 per cent oil content. The variety matures in 145 days.
  • Sunflower hybrid PSH 1962 : It is a short

    duration, medium tall hybrid with average plant height of 165 em. It matures in 99 days and its average seed yield is 8.2 ql acre. The seeds of this hybrid are black and bold with 100 seed weight of 6.4 g.The oil content of this hybrid is 41.9 per cent.

  • Maize: Karimnagar Makka(KNMH4010131);

  • Pulses: Sri Rama (MGG 351), Yadadri (WGG 42), Ujwala (PRG 176), Mannemkonda Kandi (ICPH 2740) and Hanuma (TDRG 4);
  • Oilseeds: Pragathi (PCS 262); and
  • Fodder crops: Moti Bajra (APFB 09-1) and Vijaya (APFC 10-1).

    • Multi - purpose Rolling Stem Applicator

    Multi-purpose rolling stem applicator
    A drudgery-reducing and low-cost insecticide applicator, rolling stem applicator was designed and demonstrated for management of sucking pests of cotton by the KVK, Wyra scientists of the university. This technology is popular in Telangana and 7 districts of Andhra Pradesh. It is a drudgery-reducing, cost-effective, time and water saving eco-friendly tool. For the management of sucking pests in cotton, stem application of monocrotophos @ 1:4 and imidacloprid (1:20) was effective in reducing the incidence of the aphids, thrips and jassids. The technology was demonstrated with 842 farmers, covering 960 ha cotton crop, showing Rs 300 saving in plant-protection cost per application when compared with the foliar sprays. The farmers were satisfied with the performance of this tool. It can be utilized effectively For the management of sucking pests in other crops like tobacco, ladyfinger, beans, marigold, and can also be used for whorl application of granules and insecticide in maize, as well as for other operations like pruning, cleaning, levelling operations etc.

    Field Day on Pigeonpea

    Study Abroad Programme with Iowa State University , Ames, the USA

    An Study Abroad Programme (SAP) titled "Food and Agri Scenario in North America", the brain child of Dr D.P. Biradar, VC, with Iowa State University, Ames, the USA was highly successful. The aim of the programme was to expose the young minds to foreign institutes to provide them an early lead in their career. Fifteen students from agriculture, food technology, forestry and home science with almost an equal number of boys (8) and girls (7) undertook this course during 1-14 Sept. 2015. Off-campus visits included Pioneer, John Deere, Iowa Choice Harvest, the Fareway Distribution Centre, Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge and Tassel Ridge Winery. En route the team visited Los Angeles, Chicago, Des Monies and NewYork. The entire learning process was very enlightening and enjoyable. Dr S. Hemalatha, Professor, Food Science and Nutrition, and Dr Shoba Nagnur, Professor and Head, Department of Extension Communication Management, Rural Home Science College, co-ordinated the programme.

    The seventh Foundation Day of the university was celebrated on 24 Nov. 2015. Dr N.K. Krishna kumar, DDG (Hort), ICAR, New Delhi, was the chief guest for the function. In his inaugural speech, he said that the 21st century should be marked by not just increasing the productivity in agriculture, but also by maintaining sustainability in farming ,This goal could be achieved by increasing investment in horticulture. However, this IS really a big challenge for the governments. The public sector has a pivotal role to play in the development of sustainable agriculture, as the private sector could not be expected To centre in it during the low profit margin. Food security means nutritional security, which can best be supplemented by horticulture produces. A horticulture revolution is required to take place in three zones of the country - the dryland areas, temperate zones and north-east region of India. He also cautioned about the dangers of excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers for growing more with limited resources. There need is to grow more with fewer resources like water, land and investment. The retired Deans, Directors and Professors were felicitated during the function.

Appreciating the good work being done by the university, he added that the state has great expectations from the university.     Fruit Harvester

    Bharsar Varsity has developed a batteryoperated auto-mechanical fruit harvester that can reduce the toil inharvesting various tropical and temperate fruit crops. Prof. Mathew Prasad, VC, developed the concept and design ofthe new harvester. He pointed out that the farmers had to toil hard to harvest fruits due tothe height offruit trees. The new fruit harvester would help them harvest the fruits with minimum bruising ina much more convenient manner and save them a lot of time and labour. With minimum bruising, the shelf-life of the harvested fruit will also be longer. The fruits will also retain orchard freshness longer, and hence fetch better price inthe market. He also informed that though there were a few mechanical fruit harvesters currently available inthe market, often the farmers found it somewhat inconvenient to use them. He added that the traditional fruit harvesters generally used a scissor-action to chop off the twigs. However, the harvester developed byhim is a light-weight motorised device with rotary cutting action. It is a battery-operated device, which uses a disk cutter to chop the twigs laden with the fruits. Once cut, the fruits donot directly fall on the ground but pass downwards through acylindrical clothed chute. Shri Harish Rawat, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, launched the Bharsar Fruit Harvester.

    Dr Surjya Narayan Dutta, Assistant Professor, College of Fisheries, earned a Research Project entitled "Standardisation of breeding and rearing technology of high value vulnerable catfish Pangasius pangasius under agro-climatic condition of Punjab" from UGC, New Delhi for a period of 3 years, with a total budget of Rs 10.36 lakhs. Dr Ajeet Singh and Dr Abhed Pandey are the co-investigators of the said project, which has been designed to standardize the breeding and seed production protocols for one of the high value Pangas catfish species, Pangasius pangasius, in the State. Presently seed of Pangas catfish has to be transported from far off state like Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.

    The Pantnagar centre of All India Coordinated Research Project on Weed Management has bagged the Best Centre Award 2014-15 at the national level in recognition of its significant contributions in the area of weed management in various crops and cropping systems in Uttarakhand. The award was given at the 22nd Annual Review Meeting of the AICRP on Weed Management, held At PJTSAU, Hyderabad, during 17-18 Oct. 2015. In an assessment of the work done during the last 5 years by 28 AICRP-WM centres throughout the country, the ICAR's Directorate of Weed Research (DWR), Jabalpur and adjudged Pantnagar the best centre, with a maximum score of 84 for successful implementation of all the network research and extension programmes during this period.     university and with his academic excellence, his role in establishing newer academic programmes like Bio-energy, Environmental Science, Environmental Biotechnology, Microbial Technology, Biochemical Technology, etc. in the universities of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra has been exemplary. As an administrator, he served earlier as VC, Karpagam University, Coimbatore, and as Dean, School of Bio sciences and Bio engineering at SRM University, Chennai. He is presently Member, Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission (Agriculture and Irrigation). His efforts attracted more than 30 externally funded schemes. Dr Ramasamy published more than 151 research works, including 8 books and 23 bulletins. His recognitions include 21 awards, 2 medals and 6 fellowships, including two International and four National.
    He visited several countries, viz. Belgium, England, Germany, Sweden, France, Netherlands, the United States of America, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil. He served as Visiting Professor for many leading universities in America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
    Dr K. Ramasamy was honored the Best Vice-Chancellor of State Agricultural Universities (SAU) forthe year 2014 by All India Agricultural Students' Association (AIASA). He is a Fellow of Association of Microbiologists of India (FAMI ).

    Prof. Nazeer Ahmed, joins as VC, SKUAST, Srinagar

    23 Oct. 2015. Before this appointment, he served as Director, Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture, Srinagar (of the ICAR) for 8 years. He served the university In various capacities such as Director Resident Instruction cum- Dean Post-graduate Studies. During his 30 years of service, he contributed to teaching, research, extension and administration. He guided more than 100 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students as chairman and co-chairman, and was instrumental in establishing the Faculty of Horticulture at the university. Through various adhoc projects he created state-of-art field and laboratory facilities both at the university and at CITH, and published more than 300 research papers, extension bulletins and review papers in national and international journals. In research, he executed several multi-disciplinary and inter-institutional, national and state projects, and developed and released 33 varieties and hybrids, as well as recommended 64 production technologies for temperate fruits and vegetables.
    Prof. Ahmed received Rajbhasha Gaurav award, Dr R.S. Paroda Award, Dr M.H. Marigowda National Endowment Award, Dr Kirti Singh Gold Medal, Vijay Shree Award, Glory of India Gold Medal and Chaudhary Devilal Outstanding Award for the best AICRP (Vegetable crops & Potato) owing to his contribution to agricultural research and education in temperate region. He is Fellow, Indian Society of Vegetable Science, Horticultural Society of India, Indian Society of Horticultural Research and Development, and Confederation of Horticultural Associations of India.

    Dr T. Bhattacharyya , joins as VC, Dr BSKKV, Dapoli

    Dr T. Bhattacharyya
    Dr Tapas Bhatlacharyya took over as VC, Dr BSKKV, Dapoli, on 6 Nov. 2015. He was born in Nov. 1956. He did B.Sc. Agriculture and Ph.D. from the IARI, New Delhi. He worked as Principal Scientist and Head, Soil Resource Studies Division, National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land-Use Planning (ICAR), Nagpur for 30 years. He carried out basic and fundamental pedological research in soil genesis, classification, soil survey and mapping. He worked for various national and international projects, with special reference to soil-carbon sequestration and soil carbon modeling to address global warming and climate change issues. He has been the pioneer in soil-carbon research in India, and in reporting various soil modifiers in the soils, which act as boon for the farmers. His special area of interest has been to develop soil and land information system and to convert it into web based soil-information technology. He successfully carried out many research projects funded by national and international funding agencies.
    Dr Bhattacharyya is an active member, office bearer and Fellow of several scientific societies. He received the Leader of the Best Team Research awarded by the ICAR, New Delhi, for his contribution in soil carbon research. He visited the USA, Europe and Africa. He published 170 research papers, reviews and book articles. Dr Bhattacharyya worked as visiting Scientist, ICRISAT Development Center, Patancheru (Telangana). He served A.P. Primary Sector (Rythu Kosam) and Watershed Research Programme in Karnataka (Bhoosmrudhhi) as Capacity Coordinator at ICRISAT since Dec. 2014.
