Profile

Kamdhenu university
The Kamdhenu University came into existence by the Kamdhenu University Act, 2009 with effect from 8 July 2009. However, it started functioning since 19 Aug. 2014, when Prof. M. C. Varshneya (former VC of Anand Agricultural University) took over as its VC. The university is engaged in education, research and development, leading to advancement of learning in the fields of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Dairy, Fisheries and Allied sciences in Gujarat.

PROFESSOR JAYASHANKAR TELANGANA STATE AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, RAJENDRANAGAR

Profile

In accordance with Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014 (Central Act No.6 of 2014) the state of Telangana was formed on 2 June 2014. Accordingly, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University was bifurcated into two operational entities, and the Telangana part established as PJTSAU.
The PJTSAU has 5 constituent colleges, 3 in Agriculture and one each in Agricultural Engineering and Technology, and in Home Science. In addition, there are nine polytechnics (7 in Agriculture and 1 each in Seed Technology and Agricultural Engineering). It has 16 agricultural research stations, including three Regional Agricultural Research Stations, 9 District Agricultural Advisory and Transfer of Technology Centres, and 6 Krishi Vigyan Kendras spread across the state. Besides there are one Extension

University Campus
Education Institute, one Agricultural Information and Communication Centre, one Agricultural Technology Information Centre, one Electronic Media Wing, and one Farmers' Call Centre at Hyderabad, with scientific, supporting and administrative staff, as well as the labour force.
The Mandate of the university is to produce trained human resource through teaching, generate agricultural technologies through research, and its dissemination in the famers through extension education. Dr Praveen Rao Velchala, the VC, joined the university on 7 Nov. 2014.

The PJTSAU is governed by Board of Management, with VC as its chairperson. The university officers are Faculty Deans (Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering and Home Science), Dean of PG studies, Dean of Student Affairs, Director of Research, Director of Extension, Director of Polytechnics, Dean, Basic Science and Humanities, Registrar, Comptroller, University Librarian, Controller of Examinations and Estate Officer, in handling academic, research, extension, administration and financial matters.
The college administration is under the control of Associate Deans, whereas Regional Agricultural Research Stations are under Associate Directors of Research. The DAATTCs and KVKs are headed by Co-ordinators and Programme Co-ordinators respectively. The individual research station is headed by a senior scientist, designated Head of the station.

Educational Programmes

The PJTSAU offers Bachelors degree (UG) programmes in Agriculture, Home Science, Agricultural Engineering and Technology and Commercial Agriculture and Business Management.
In addition, it offers Master's degree (PG) programmes in 24 disciplines, and Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) programmes in 17 disciplines of Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering and Technology, and Home Science Faculties. It also offers 2-year Diploma in Agriculture and Seed Technology in local Telugu language; 3-year Diploma in Agricultural Engineering; and 1-year PG Diploma in Nutritional Therapy, and Food Analysis and Quality Control in English medium to train mid-level para-technical workers.

TAMIL NADU FISHERIES UNIVERSITY, NAGAPATTINAM

The TNFU is a statefunded, unitary professional fisheries university, imparting education, research and training to increase the fish production and utilization by following the State Agricultural University pattern and syllabi. Prof. Baskaran Manimaran joined as its VC on 20 Mar. 2013.

Education

Faculty: It has 3 faculties, viz. Faculty of Fisheries Sciences; Faculty of Basic Sciences; and Faculty of Fisheries Engineering.
Schools: It runs 5 schools, viz. School of Aquaculture, School of Harvest and Post-Harvest Technology, School of Fisheries Resources and Environment Management, and School of Fisheries Information and Social Sciences.
Research Centres: There are 5 research centres in the state, viz. Fisheries Research and Extension, Centre, Madhavaram, Chennai; Centre for Marine Fin Fish Culture, Mandapam, Ramnad District, Tilapia Research Centre, Barur, Krishnagiri District, Shrimp Brood Bank, Neendakara, B, Kanyakumari District; and Centre for Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhavanisagar, Erode District.

Academic programmes: It runs 4 programmes, viz. Bachelor of Fisheries Science; Master of Fisheries Science (10 disciplines); Doctor of Philosophy (7 disciplines); and Bachelor of Engineering in Fisheries Engineering (from 2015-16).

Research

Research activities in various fields of fisheries are operated at the 3 colleges or institutes and 5 research centers. Peripheral research centres have been established for undertaking research activities in specific fields like ornamental fish culture, aquaculture system, tilapia farming, fresh-water aquaculture, marine finfish culture, and shrimp-brood development. The university has established state-of-art laboratory facilities for Sea-food safety and quality assurance, Aquaculture, Fisheries biotechnology, Aquatic animal health and Environment management, besides old library and fisheries museum (operating since 40 years). Currently the university operates externally funded projects costing Rs 19.35 crores.

Extension

The Extension activities and outreach programmes are undertaken at the colleges or institutes and 5 research centres of the university. The various extension activities include conduction of certificate courses, skill-development programmes, vocational training programmes, participation in exhibitions, demonstrations, farm-advisory services and bringing out extension publications for promoting fisheries.

National Seminar on Agroforestry

The Agroforestry group in the College of Agriculture of the university organized a national seminar on 'Holistic development of agroforestry: Potential and policy issues' on 13 Feb. 2015. In the inaugural session of the seminar experts from International Centre for Research in Agroforestry, New Delhi; Central Agroforestry Research Institute, Jhansi; SHIATS, Allahabad; The ICAR as well as from Pantnagar university shared their views with the participants. Dr P.K. Nair, distinguished Professor and Nehru Fulbright Fellow from the USA, delivered the keynote address

Workshop-cum-Seminar on Floriculture

A national workshop-cum-seminar on 'Precision farming: a boon for flower industry' was organized by Precision Farming Development Centre of Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture during 2-3 Mar. 2015. Total 165 farmers from various districts of Uttarakhand, officials of Horticulture Department of Uttarakhand Government and students of the college participated in the workshop. Resource persons from the ICAR institutes, PFDC, industry, etc. were invited to enlighten the participants

The NSS Cell of the university celebrated National Science Day- 2015 on the theme “Science for nation building”in the memory of the invention of “Raman effect” by internationally acclaimed Indian Nobel laureate physicist Sir C. V. Raman and spreading the message of importance of science and its application among the people.

A Senior Scientist, Punjab Remote Sensing Centre, Ludhiana delivered a guest lecture on “Application of remote sensing and geographical information system”. Dr S.S. Hassan informed that we should also nurture the nature for maintaining equilibrium on our earth planet.

A Pashu Palan mela was organized during 20-21 Mar. 2015 to convey the message to develop livestock farming as an impressive and effective option of diversification. Dr AK Singh, DDG, ICAR was the chief guest of the morning session, and Dr S. Mandeep Singh Sandhu, IAS, Financial Commissioner, Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries was the chief guest of the evening session. Members of Board of Management also attended the mela. Mela attracted a huge gathering to learn about development of livestock profession on modern terms. Dr A.S. Nanda, VC, said that the farmers should come forward to establish their self-help group as entrepreneur.

The university, signed Memorandum of Understanding on 8 Apr. 2015 with University of Sydney, Australia, for collaborative research and to facilitate exchange of faculty and students. Dr A.S. Nanda, VC, represented the GADVASU and Dr Navneet Dhand, Sub-Dean (Research Development), Faculty of Veterinary Science, represented the University of Sydney, Australia. Dr Dhand discussed the research priorities of University of Sydney, and its keen desire to work with the scientists from India. He described it as a beginning of a long-term relationship between the two premier institutions for developing new tools and techniques to improve the animal and public health. He informed that it is the first-of-its-kind MoU of University of Sydney with any veterinary university in Asia, when University of Sydney funded a health project in collaboration of School of Public Health and Zoonoses to start research collaborations. Some other projects are also in the pipeline. To extend the mutual collaboration GADVASU is also organizing a 3-day- international workshop in association with University of Sydney from 13-15 Apr. 2015 on “Study design and data analysis” in School of Public Health and Zoonoses, GADVASU, for the faculty and PG students. .

JUNAGADH AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, JUNAGADH

10th Convocation

H.E. Shri O.P. Kohli presided at the 10th Annual Convocation at Junagadh Agricultural University on 20 Jan. 2015. Dr Arvind Kumar, DDG (Education), ICAR, New Delhi, the chief guest, delivered the convocation address. Dr A.R. Pathak, VC, welcomed the dignitaries and highlighted the achievements of JAU in education and research. Shri Jashabhai Barad, Minister of State, in Agriculture and Civil Aviation, Government of Gujarat was the guest of honour. 330 students (180 B.Sc., 136 M.Sc. and 14 Ph.D.) received their degrees. He also awarded 7 gold medals, 35 silver medals and two cash prizes to the students for their outstanding performance at the UG and PG levels.

A calf rally was organized by Cattle Breeding Farm, at village Loej (Junagadh) on 31 Jan. 2015 under the Krushi Vikas Varsh (2014-15) programme of Government of Gujarat. Dr A.R. Pathak, VC, inaugurated it by lighting the lamp. Mr Baldev Singh Vaghela, Dy SP, Mangrol, was chief guest. Dharmkishorji Swami - Shri of the Awaminarayan Temple, Loej, blesses the occasion. Dr A.R. Pathak, in his presidential address, explained the importance of animal production, especially of cattle, and the role of university in the upliftment of livestock owners and rural people.

The ninth DUS review meeting of Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights, Government of India, New Delhi, was held at the university, during 9-10 Mar. 2015. Dr A.R. Pathak, VC presided over the meeting. The other dignitaries present were: Dr N.K. Krishna Kumar, DDG (Hort.), ICAR, New Delhi; Dr J.S. Chauhan, ADG (Seeds), ICAR; Dr R.R. Brain-storming on “Establishment of cow sanctuary in Gujarat”

A brain-storming session on “Establishment of cow sanctuary in Gujarat” was inaugurated by Shri Babubhai Bokhiria, Minister of Agriculture, Co-operation, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Cow Breeding and Water Resources (except Kalpasar), Government of Gujarat, on 28 Feb. 2015 at Gandhinagar. Overall 44 participants were registered in this scientific forum. Dr A.R. Pathak, in his keynote address laid emphasise on the need to conserve indigenous germplasm to benefit the dairy farmers. Shri Babubhai Bokhiria released the souvenir prepared for the occasion and the magazine of College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry.

A Training programme on “Life skills and personality development” was conducted during 16-18 Mar. 2015 for the P.G. students of Department of Biotechnology, wherein 54 PG students of the department participated. During the training programme students learned various aspects of life skills for personality development which will be useful for the holistic development of their personality. Dr A.M. Pathak, VC, in his valedictory address asked the students to assimilate the knowledge to develop integrated personality.

State Agri Leadership Summit at Gurgaon held during 13-15 Mar. 2015. The university organized an exhibition displaying its newly developed technologies and extension programmes. The technologies exhibited were design of modern farm animal house, preservation of green fodder, urea detection in milk, early pregnancy diagnosis by ultra-sound technique, meat and milk products and mineral mixture etc.
Thousands of farmers visited the university stall everyday to see the exhibits. The farmers showed keen interest in “Hardhenu” breed of cattle developed by it. On this occasion, Maj. Gen. (Dr) Shrikant, VC, informed that “Hardhenu” breed of cattle was produced by mixing the blood from HF, Haryana and Sahiwal breeds of cattle, and its daily milk yield is more than 35 litres. It can easily withstand high temperature and is highly disease resistant.

Two scientists Dr Ravindra Sharma, Director of Research; and Dr N.K. Mahajan, Head, Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology; were honoured Fellowship of National Academy of Veterinary Sciences (India). This fellowship was awarded to them at XIII NAVS (I) convocation-cum-conference on “Strategies for enhancing rural economy through livestock development” held at Chhattisgarh Kamdhenu Vishwavidyalaya, Durg.

Eminent scientists who participated in this workshop included Dr K.M.L. Pathak, DDG, ICAR; Prof. Natalie Waran, Associate Dean, Royal School of Veterinary Science; Maj. Gen. (Dr) R.M. Kharb, Chairman AWBI; Maj Gen (Dr) Shrikant, VC, LUVAS. Maj Gen (Dr) Shrikant in his address stressed on the need for student-exchange programme between these two veterinary colleges. He discussed in detail the importance of food safety.

The meeting was organised by Dr Zhang Yuming, DG, Agricultural Department of Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, in collaboration with Dr Jef Hammond and Dr Peter Kirkland, Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute, Australia; Dr Peter Martin, Pirbright Institute, Pirbright, the UK and Dr Li Huachun, DG of Yunnan Tropical and Subtropical Animal Virus Diseases Laboratory, Yunnan Animal Science and Veterinary Institute, P.R. China. It was hosted by Agricultural Department of Yunnan Province.
Dr Sushila Maan presented the Indian perspective of research on these pathogens. She informed the delegates about the achievements, laboratory facilities, capabilities and technical expertise of faculty.

A renowned Virologist Prof. Benedict Kaufer from Institute of Virology, Free University of Berlin, Germany, visited the university. He met Maj. Gen. (Dr) Shrikant, VC, and discussed about future collaboration between these institutes. The VC presented him a memento.
Prof. Kaufer also met Dr Ravindra Sharma, Director of Research; Dr Gurdial Singh, Dean CoVSc; and other Heads of Departments and discussed about the research on animal viruses.

Women empowerment
A mahila sammelan on “Women empowerment through animal husbandry” was organized at the university in which Ch. Birender Singh, Central Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, was present as the chief guest.
In this programme more than 800 rural women from different parts of Haryana participated. In addition, some of the progressive ladies working in the area of livestock entrepreneurship were also present. Ch. Birender Singh congratulated the VC for such social initiative:

Ch. Birender Singh said that women are contributing in every aspect in the society. He called for ensuring active participation of rural women in the field of animal husbandry, and pointed out that the society has to change the mentality towards women. He released a book written by the university faculty and he also started an 'Android mobile phone app' to help the animal farmers. He informed that Government of India has established a fund of Rs 2,000 crores for providing loan to weaker sections of society. Maj. Gen. (Dr) Shrikant, VC, said that there are ample opportunities in the field of animal husbandry. Rural women can increase their profit manifolds by adopting scientific methods and marketing their milk products. He said that Haryana State can earn Rs 1800 crores simply by increasing the milk yield per animal by half a litre.

The Maharashtra State Inter-University Research Convention was organized during 21-23 Jan. 2015 at Nagpur. H.E. Shri Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao, the Governor, Maharashtra State and the Chancellor of MAFSU, Nagpur, was the chief guest; and Prof. K.M.L. 30th Convocation

The thirtieth Convocation of MPKV, Rahuri was organized at the central campus, Rahuri. H.E. Shri Vidyasagar Rao, Governor of Maharashtra, presided over the function. Shri Eknathrao Khadase, Minister of Agriculture and Revenue, Government of Maharashtra and Pro-Chancellor of MPKV, was the chief guest. Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, National Research Professor and President of Global Research Alliance; Dr T.A More, VC; Dr B.R. Ulmek, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture were on the dais. In his convocation address Dr Mashelkar said that India needs to move rapidly towards innovation-led agricultural growth. This has to be achieved with speed, scale and sustainability. In the new National Agricultural Innovation System, we must move to `total innovation', involving technological and institutional innovations throughout the production, marketing, policy research and enterprise domains. The challenge for the Indian Agriculture Innovation System will also be to get 'more from less for more'. Indian demand for food grains would increase from 192 million tonnes in 2000 to 342 million tonnes in 2030. This can be possible by using the power of new technology, such as information and communication technology, nanotechnology, space technology, modern biotechnology etc. Besides we must build a robust Indian Agricultural Innovation System based on our great strengths. We must build our own Indian Agriculture Innovation Index. H.E. Shri Vidyasagar Rao conferred the degrees and medals to the students, which included 92 Ph. D. degrees, 668 PG degrees and 4365 UG degrees. Dr T.A. More, VC, in his welcome address reviewed the progress in education, research and extension-education activities of the university.

A national workshop on “Global opportunities in agricultural entrepreneurship or business” was organized at Pune during 15-17 Dec. 2014. It was a joint venture of all the 4 agricultural universities in Maharashtra, together with Journal of Agricultural Research Technology a joint publication with Maharashtra Agro Industries Development Corporation Ltd (MAIDC) organized the two days National Workshop on 15-17 Dec, 2014 at Pune.
Total 67 experts from India and abroad addressed these technical sessions, attended by more than 800 delegates from all over India.
Dr C.D. Mayee, former Chairman, Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board, was the chief guest of the inaugural function, presided by Dr T.A. More. The guest of honour was Dr Shivajirao Deshmukh, DG, Vasantrao Sugar Institure, Pune.

On this occasion Dr Mayee said that it is needed to give more impetus towards agricultural industrialization and small-scale agricultural industries to increase the production of crops to achieve our economic goal.
Dr Shivajirao Deshmukh said that we are self-sufficient in foodgrain production due to different technologies developed by agricultural universities and positive response of the farmers.
Dr Tukaram More, VC, MPKV, Rahuri said that the agricultural universities face lots of problems while conducting research, hence it is necessary to provide self- initiation rights to the agricultural universities and colleges.

The Tenth annual convocation of the university was held on 15 Jan. 2015. H.E. Shri O.P. Kohli, Governor, Gujarat State and Chancellor of the university, presided over the function, Dr H.S. Gupta, DG, Borlaug Institute of South Asia, New Delhi was the chief guest; and Shri Babubhai Bokhiriya, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperation, Government of Gujarat, was the guest of honour. Dr C.J. Dangaria, VC, delivered the welcome speech and appraised the house about all-round development of the university in the field of education, research and extension. He informed the house about sanctioning of new College of Fisheries at Navsari by Government of Gujarat. Shri Babubhai Bokhiriya congratulated the outgoing students and impressed them that our 65% youth can play a great role in the development of the nation, especially in agriculture. He informed the gathering about various schemes launched by Government of Gujarat for strengthening agriculture, and about celebration of the year 2014-15 as “Krishi Vikas Varsh”.
Dr H.S. Gupta, chief guest of the ceremony, in his convocation address laid stress on the role of agriculture sector in nutritional security, need of doubling the water-use efficiency, improving the productivity of pulse and oilseed crops, threat of climate change, quality-seed production, strengthening of tissue-culture facilities, development of farm women-friendly technologies and minimizing the pre- and post- harvest losses. H.E. Shri O.P. Kohli, President of the function, congratulated the students for successful completion of various degree programmes and advised them to serve the nation with holistic approach for all-round development. During the convocation various degrees were conferred to total 378 students, including 185 B.Sc. students, 157 M.Sc. students and 36 Ph.D. students. Moreover, 29 medals including 11 medals for PG studies and 18 medals for UG studies were awarded to 11 girls and 8 boys student for excelling in the academics. .

A Global Social Science Conference on Management of Sustainable Livelihood Systems was held during 14-17 Feb. 2015 at Bhubaneswar, organized jointly by International Society of Extension Education and Orissa Society of Extension Education of the university. Shri P. Maharathy, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and ARD, Government of Odisha, inaugurated it. Dr Noel P Magor, IRRI, Philipines was the guest of honour and Dr Manoranjan Kar, VC, presided. The conference was attended by 300 social scientists and researchers from India as well as abroad.

Best on farm Centre

The On-Farm Centre, Kendrapara operating under AICRP on Integrated Farming Systems, of the university was adjudged the “Best on farm centre” at the national level, and was awarded a certificate of Appreciation by the ICAR-IIFSR, Modipuram in the 31st Biennial Workshop of the Project held at TNAU, Coimbatore during 22-24 Dec. 2014.

In this mega event a stall was opened to display exhibits and technology developed by the university scientists. The scientists interacted with the participating farmers of the state to discuss steps to improve the productivity in agriculture and allied sectors.

Training on Data Management

A training programme on Data Management for Researchers in Agriculture showcasing Open Data Kit was conducted at College of Agriculture, Bhubaneswar during 18-19 Mar. 2015 as a part of a CSISA (IRRI)-OUAT collaboration on capacity building of the students. Thirty two PG students participated in the training. The open data kit is android based software, which makes data collection easy and efficient and later helps in analyzing the data by connecting it through the server. The students were exposed to the theory and practical sessions and received hands-on-training on the technique to use these tools for formulating the survey forms and the experiment data.

Six New Varieties

The PAU released six new varieties or hybrids. These include PR 124 variety of rice, which matures in 135 days, and has long slender and translucent grains; PMH 10 of spring maize that gives average yield of 31.6 q/acre; two varieties of American cotton F 2383 that is shorter in height and suitable for mechanical picking of bolls, and F 2228 having a yield of 7.4 q/acre; Pb. Til No.2 of Sesame having a yield of 2.80q/acre and is resistant to cercospora leaf-spot; and PSC 4 Sorghum, which is a multi-cut hybrid having a yield of 340 q/acre and is resistant to shoot-fly.

The 49th Annual convention of Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers; and National seminar on Engineering solutions for sustainable agriculture and food processing were held at Ludhiana during 23-25 Feb. 2015. About 400 participants attended it. Dr G.S. Kalkat, Chairman, Punjab State Farmers' Commission, inaugurated it. He laid emphasis on devising technologies and strategies keeping in view the concern over scarcity of water, food, energy and issues of climate change. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, VC, said that farm technologies need to be developed for the conservation of natural resources and for growing alternative crops.

Visit of Delegates from WLEDP, the USA

A 13-member delegation of Wyoming Leadership Education and Development Programme, the USA visited the university on 15 Jan. 2015 to have a broader view of Punjab agriculture. Apart from discussing various achievements of the PAU, interaction also took place in the mutual areas of interest such as creating a highly motivated cadre of agricultural leaders, farmers' fairs, water saving technologies etc.

To gain an in-depth understanding of Punjab agriculture, a 30-member delegation from University of Nebraska, Lincoln, the USA visited the university on
16 Jan. 2015. The visit was a part of their Nebraska Leadership Education and Action Development Programme, headed by Dr Terry Hejny, Director, Nebraska LEAD Programme, Nebraska Agricultural Leadership Council. The delegation interacted with the senior officials and the scientists from the University who familiarized them with the genesis and research programmes of the PAU.

The first convocation of the university was held on 19 Feb 2015 graced by H.E. Dr K. Rosaish, Governor of Tamil Nadu and Chancellor of the university. Prof Baskaran Manimaran, VC, welcomed the gathering and presented the report of the university. Dr C. Vasudevappa, VC, University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamoga, Karnataka was the chief guest. In his convocation address he informed that this university has aligned its institutional mandates and functionality in accordance with the growth in the fisheries and aquaculture sector with reinforced organizational effort.
Dr S. Vijay Kumar, IAS, Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries declared institution of 6 endowments for academic achievements.
Total 76 graduates were conferred the degrees at the convocation (1 Ph.D, 31 Master of Fisheries Science and 44 Bachelor of Fisheries Science), degrees would be sent to the 23 students through post. Dr K. Ratna Kumar, Registrar read out the names of 23 medal winners who were awarded for academic excellence and performance.

Dr R.S. Paroda, in his convocation address, stressed on the need of nutritional security, He said: “having achieved self-sufficiency on the food front, our concern now is nutrition and health of our people. We need another revolution in agriculture for nutritional security. We cannot overlook the fact that the numbers of protein malnutrition children in south Asia is higher than in sub-Saharan Africa”. Besides, a significant increase in foodgrain production, with a buffer stock of more than 50 million tonnes, people below the poverty line have no economic access to it. Hence, we need to reduce the production cost and increase the yield.
H.E. Shri Vajubhai Vala conferred degrees to 171 undergraduate, 106 Post- graduate, and 10 to Ph.D. students. Several institutional awards were also presented during the occasion.

A farm women's rally was organized jointly by College of Home Science and Directorate of Extension Education, MKV, Parbhani on 3 Jan. 2015 on the eve of birth anniversary of Kranti Jyoti Savitribai Phule. Dr B. Venkateswarlu, VC, presided over the function; and Dr (Mrs) Pratima Ingole (renowned writer and social worker, Pune) was the chief guest of inaugural progamme. Smt Sangita Wadkar, Mayor, Parbhani graced the function. Dr Ingole said that farm women should be involved in the decision-making process, and the women should come forward to prevent farmers' suicides. About 1,200 women participated and took benefit of agricultural exhibition, lectures and role-play demonstrations.

A National Symposium on “Safety of food of animal origin for domestic and export markets: Legal perspectives” was held at Karnataka Veterinary Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, The XIII Annual conference of Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists was also held on this occasion. Out of five prizes awarded each year by IAVPHS, four awards were bagged by GADVASU faculty, by the scientists from School of public health and zoonoses.

Sherikar Outstanding Public Health Veterinarian Award” for his significant academic and research contributions in the field of Zoonoses, Food
Safety and Quality Control, and Environmental Hygiene. Dr Simranpreet Kaur, Assistant Professor, won “Dr S.P. Singh Best Research Paper Award” for her paper on Group A rotaviruses in humans and animals. Dr Abhishek Gaurav won “Dr V.N. Bachhil Young Scientist award” for his Ph.D. research work on antibiotic residues. Dr Lokesh K.M., Ph.D. scholar, bagged the best poster award for the research work conducted on Japanese encephalitis.
Dr J.P.S. Gill was re-elected as Vice- President of Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists for tenure of 3 years. Two Assistant Professors of the department; Dr Simranpreet Kaur and Dr J.S. Bedi, were elected as Members of Executive Committee of IAVPHS.

The Karnataka-based Life Sciences Foundation India conferred its National Excellence Award 2014-15 on Dr Hari Mohan Saxena, Professor of Immunology, Department of Veterinary Microbiology, of the university. Padma Shree Dr Nityanand, former Director, Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow presented him the award at National Conference on Nanosciences, Nanotoxicology and Nanoinformatics held at the Integral University, Lucknow. Dr Saxena was bestowed with this honour for his innovation in diagnosis of infectious diseases patented by him in the USA, China and South Africa. The innovation was earlier selected among top 100 innovations in the India Innovation Growth Programme by FICCI, Indo-US Science and Technology Forum, DST & Stanford University, the USA.
The novel superagglutination test developed by Dr Saxena and his team addresses the two major problems of false negative and false positive results obtained with the conventional slide or plate agglutination tests, and the kits based on them. The innovative concepts behind the superagglutination test are applicable not only to brucellosis but to other infectious diseases of animals and humans like Salmonellosis, AIDS etc also.

Dr S.S. Sikka, Senior Nutritionist and Head, Department of Animal Nutrition, and a recipient of Shiksha Rattan Puruskar-2007, was awarded Dr S.Z. Qasim, Medal-2015 for his outstanding contributions in the field of Animal nutrition. Dr Sikka acted as Vice- President of Animal Nutrition Association during 2010- 11, and presently he is Vice-President of Indian Academy of Veterinary Nutrition and Animal Welfare. The award was conferred on him in the inaugural session of the 17th Indian Agriculture Scientists' and Farmers' Congress on “Agri- innovation for enhancing production and rural employment held at Allahabad under the auspices of Bioved Research Institute of Agriculture and Technology.

Prof A.K. Misra, VC, received the prestigious “Dr P. Bhattacharya Memorial Award” of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences for the Biennium 2013-14. It was presented to him at the inaugural session of the 12th Agricultural Science Congress held at, NDRI, Karnal during 3-6 Feb. 2015.

Dr S.L. Goswami joins as VC, BUAT, Banda

Dr Surender Lal Goswami, joined as VC, Banda University of Agriculture and Technology, Banda, (Uttar Pradesh) on 2 Mar. 2015. Dr Goswami has over 38 years of research, teaching, research management and administrative experience. Born at Sonepat in Haryana, Dr Goswami did M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Animal Genetics and Breeding from the NDRI, Karnal. He joined Agricultural Research Service in its first Batch in 1976. He served NDRI as Scientist and during his long research and teaching career became Joint Director (Research) and worked for 7 years, Then he moved to National Academy of Agricultural Research Management, Hyderabad as Director in December 2011, where he served till June 2014. His research interest is in the areas of Livestock Cytogenetics, Genetics of male fertility, Embryo biotechnology, Molecular genetics, and Genomics. His work on SCE was recognized while awarding him an assignment of national importance to monitor the genetic damage to the animals exposed to MIC due to gas-leak tragedy at Union Carbide Plant at Bhopal in 1984. During the late 1980s he initiated work on Embryo biotechnologies. The IVF procedure in buffaloes was standardized, and sexing of pre-implantation embryos was perfected. Sperm-chromosome analysis using zona-free hamster oocytes in cattle and buffaloes were reported for the first time. Birth of four goat kids from the embryo produced through in vitro procedure was reported for the first time in the country. Dr Goswami guided the research work of 11 Ph.D. and 11 M.V.Sc. students in the area of Animal Genetics and Breeding and Animal Biotechnology. Dr Goswami developed a state-of-art research facility through Animal Biotechnology Centre at NDRI, Karnal, which attracted national and global attention for successfully
producing the world's first cloned buffalo calves, besides other achievements in genomics of early embryonic development under his mentorship. As Director of NAARM, Dr Goswami made significant contributions to Human Resource Development and Capacity Development initiatives of the ICAR. During his long research and academic career he won several awards including Jawaharlal Nehru Award, Dr G. B. Singh Memorial Award Dr M. S. Swaminathan Award and Fellowship of National Academy of Dairy Science (India), as well as the FAO, UNDP Fellowships, and Visiting Scientist Fellowships etc. Dr Goswami has visited several countries including Nepal, Ireland, England, the USA, Russia on different academic assignments.

Dr M. Premjit Singh joins as VC, CAU, Imphal

Dr M. Premjit Singh joined as VC, Central Agricultural University, Imphal on 27 Mar. 2015. He passed his M.Sc. (Life Sciences) in 1981 from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He obtained his M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Zoology from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. Dr Singh started his service career in the erstwhile Manipur Agricultural College, Imphal as Assistant Professor (Entomology) in 1986. There he became Associate Professor (1990), Professor (1998) and Director of Extension Education (2009). Besides professional positions, he acted there as Registrar and Research Co-ordinator (Oilseed crops) for more than a decade. Young Scientist award was conferred to Dr Singh in 1992 by DST, New Delhi for his research project entitled “Studies on bee pollination of oilseed crops”. He undertook 6 research projects funded by external agencies and supervised 5 Ph.D. and 10 M.Sc. (Agric.) theses. He attended 8 international conferences, 77 national conferences and 5 training courses. To his credit he has 99 research papers, 55 research communications, 7 books, 11 technical bulletins and many popular articles. He is the Chief Editor of CAU Farm Magazine and CAU Kisan Diary, published in 7 languages. He has vast experience in North East Agriculture and is member of many high-level committees, expert groups, professional bodies, university bodies etc. Dr Singh developed or identified 14 novel technologies, concepts, methodologies in the area of plant protection. For the resource poor farmers of North-Eastern Hill Region, his exemplary contributions are: large-scale demonstration on “Zero tillage cultivation of rapeseed-mustard in rice fallow ” covering more than 1000 ha for 4 consecutive years; front-line demonstration on location-specific IPM in rice using gall midge and blast-resistant rice variety in 200 ha for 5 consecutive years, construction of water harvesting structures in farmers' fields with micro-irrigation facilities; and quality seed production of rice and oilseeds under seed-village concept.

Dr Magala Rai joined as VC, at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar on 21 Mar. 2015. He is the 22nd VC of the university. Dr Mangala Rai, a graduate of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, is a renowned plant breeder, researcher, policy maker and an eminent agriculture scientist. He was Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Government of India; and Director-General, ICAR, New Delhi. He shouldered numerous national and international responsibilities with path-breaking attainments, spread over 3 decades. In recognition of his contribution to science and society, Dr Rai was conferred Doctorate of Sciences (honoris causa) by 16 universities, including Pantvarsity
