Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth at Rahuri was
established in 1969. It currently comprises 6 colleges. It has an
Oilseed Research Station at Jalgaon, Wheat Research Station at Niphad,
Sugarcane Research Station at Padegaon, Dryland Research Station at
Solapur, Fruit Research Station at Pune and other 15 research
stations. The university has developed Shradha and Saburi pearl
millet, Yashoda and Mauli sorghum, Vijay, Vishal and Virat chickpea,
Phule-Pragati groundnut, Nira sugarcane, Mridula pomegranate, Sai
Sarbati lime and many other nationally and internationally popular
varieties. It developed Triveni cow, a triple cross of Holstein
Friesian, Gir and New Jersey.
The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and is
the Chairman of Executive Council, who is assisted by four
senior-level Directors/ Deans.
The university has excellent network of extension programme in all
10 districts of western Maharashtra region. The university has
established ATIC and REC for extension work. Fairs, rallies
exhibition, demonstrations and farmers discussion are organized
regularly, which help the students to understand the local problems in
agriculture.
