The Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur, (earlier named Agricultural University, Udaipur) came into existence on 1 November 1999 by bifurcating the Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner, to cover 11 districts of the south and south-eastern part of Rajasthan.

The Board of Management has the supreme policy decision making body with the Vice- Chancellor as its Chairman. He is assisted by 5 Directors (Research, Extension Education, Planning and Monitoring, Resident Instructions and Students Welfare), 4 Deans (constituent colleges RCA/CTAE/CHS/CDFST) and a Registrar, a Comptroller, a Controller of examinations and an Estate Officer for academic, administration, financial and other matters. The Academic Council, Research Council, Extension Education Council and Post-graduate Faculty are the other bodies of the university.

The university has four faculties (Agriculture, Home Science, Technology and Engineering, Dairy and Food Technology). It has three Agricultural Research Stations located at Udaipur, Kota and Banswara, two Agricultural Research Sub-stations at Aklera and Pratapgarh, one Dryland Farming Research Station at Arjia, Bhilawara, and one Livestock Research Station at Vallabhnagar. The university has produced 370 tonnes breeder-seed during 2000-01 of different crops.

The major activity of the extension education services include specialized training of development department officers, extension functionaries, vocational training programme for unemployed youth, farmers, farm women and young entrepreneur; demonstrations; farm visits and consultancy; joint diagnostic visit, etc for effective transfer of technology.

Besides, off-campus training programmes, are organized with to provide on-the-spot advice and solution to the farmers problems, along with group discussion cum one day training on different aspects related to agriculture and allied pursuits. In additions, skill-oriented, need-based, employment-generating training in agriculture and allied fields is imparted to school drop-into and rural youth.
