The Indian
Veterinary Research Institute was established in 1889 as the
Imperial Bacteriology Laboratory at Pune and was later transferred
to Mukteswar (Kumaon U.P.) in 1893. Subsequently, for extending
the activities of the institute, Izatnagar (UP) Campus was
established in 1913 for large-scale production of sera and
vaccines. It has campuses at Mukteswar and Bangalore, and regional
stations at Palampur (H.P.), srinagar (J&K) and Kolkatta (W.B.).
At present there are 21 Divisions and 6 Sections for specialized
research in the field of Animal Health, Production and Technology.
It was set up as deemed university in November 1983, having integrating programmes on Livestock health, Production, Technology and Social sciences related to animal husbandry.
The IVRI has shown new directions in the development of biological used for diagnosis, prevention, cure and control of many devastating diseases of livestock including poultry; increased production of milk, meat, egg and other animal products by better utilization of feed recourses.
The university offers Master’s programme in 23 disciplines and Doctoral programme in 21 disciplines. Besides this, National Diploma courses of 10 months duration are also offered in 9 disciplines. Higher specialized short-term courses of 2-4 weeks duration are also held from time to time in different disciplines.
Under the human-resource development programme, three centres of Advanced studies in Animal nutrition, animal biotechnology and Animal physiology are also continuing to update the knowledge of teachers of veterinary and allied faculties.
The university has won Jawaharlal Nehru award 15 times, and also Rafi Ahmad Kidwai Award (1990-92).
The university has collaborations with ICMR, DBT, CSIR and DST, as well as FAO, UNDP, WHO. ODA, EEC and IAEA.
