The Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) was established on 9th August, 2005 at Ludhiana by carving out the College of Veterinary Science from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and started functioning from 21st April 2006. The Mandate of the University is ( I ) To impart education and to produce quality graduates in different disciplines of Veterinary, animal, fishery and dairy sciences and technology, and (2 )To provide Research and Development support for improving human resource for generation and dissemination of knowledge for the growth of livestock. The Infrastructure and facilities that University provides are :- Administrative Block, College of Veterinary Sciences, Clinical Complex, Animal Nutrition Centre ,Livestock Farms, Fish Hatchery and Farms, Instructional Animal Herd, Small Animal colony, Veterinary Postmortem Hall, Experimental animal House, Disease Investigation Centre, Computer Centre, and Students Hostel Complex.

The University offers (i) Five Years Programme in Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & AH), (II) Postgraduate programmes (M.V.Sc.) in 17 and (III) Doctoral programme (Ph.D) in 14 disciplines. At present there are 292 undergraduate and 65 postgraduate students on roll of the college. Since the inception of the college of Veterinary Sciences 2239 B.V.Sc. & AH students, 736 M.V.Sc. /M.Sc. students and 203 Ph.D students have completed their degree programme successfully. ICAR has also granted two Centers of Advanced studies in Department of Veterinary Surgery & Radiology, and Department of Animal Reproduction, Gynecology and Obstetrics. Remount Veterinary Corps NCC programme is mandatory for all undergraduate students.
