Central Institute of Fisheries Education was established in 1961. Its administrative control was transferred from the Government of India to the ICAR in 1979. It was conferred the status of deemed university in 1989.

The headquarter of CIFE is located in a lush green campus of about 2.22 ha at a distance of about half a kilometer from the Versova beach at Mumbai. The main establishment of the institute is housed in a three-storied building with all the essential infrastructural facilities like class rooms, laboratories, library, aquarium, etc. The institute has well-equipped computer facility with multimedia and VSAT Internet connectivity. All the laboratories and divisions are connected through Local Area Network (LAN).

It has five centres, located at Kolkata (W.B.), Kakinda (A.P.), Lucknow (U.P.), Powarkheda (M.P.) and Rohtak (Haryana.)

Academic Programmes

CIFE’s academic programme includes M.F.Sc. in Freshwater aquaculture, Inland aquaculture, Mariculture, Fisheries resources management, Post-harvest technology, Pathology and microbiology, Nutrition and biochemistry, and Fish genetics and biotechnology; Ph. D. in Inland aquaculture, Mariculture, Fisheries resources management and Post-harvest technology; and PG diploma in Marine fisheries and Inland fisheries. Admissions to these courses are made yearly on the basis of national level entrance examination. The institute has a 150 seater hostel at the headquarters with mess, and hostels at each centre with boarding facilities. The institute has been recognized as a Centre of Advanced Studies in Fisheries Science by the ICAR.

Research

The research thrusts of CIFE involve basic research of applied value focusing more on development of site-specific and user-friendly technological packages. The CIFE has developed several types of carp hatchery models, has evolved hatchery-management techniques for prawns and shrimps; made successful use of ground saline-water ponds for aquaculture; assessed the impact of shrimp farming on coastal environment; a cost-effective hormonal preparation for induced breeding of fish, etc.

Extension

Short-term training programmes on various aspects of fisheries are regularly conducted by CIFE for fisherfolk, aquafarmers, entrepreneurs and other interested enthusiasts.

The CIFE has a system of rendering fishery advisory service, in which entrepreneurs, aquafarmers etc. are given expert guidance on their problems relating to fisheries and aquaculture.

Consultancy services

It offers consultancy services on various aspects of fisheries, viz. Seed production and grow-out operation of carps; hatchery management and farming of giant freshwater prawn; hatchery and grow-out operation of penaeid shrimps; culture of live food organisms, aquaculture in ground saline-water ponds; disease diagnosis and their control in aquaculture; bioactive and biomedical compounds from marine biota; engineering aspects of aquaculture; EIA studies related to fisheries and aquaculture projects etc.
