Bihar Animal Sciences University was established with its headquarters at Patna through an act of Bihar State (BASU Act No. 15 of 2016, notified in the Bihar Gazette on 29 August 2016) for the development of Veterinary Science, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Technology, Fisheries and allied Sciences in the State of Bihar as a part of the Krishi Road Map of Bihar. This University has been carved out of the Bihar Agricultural University as two of its constituent colleges at Patna viz. Bihar Veterinary College and Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology have been transferred to the BASU, whereas a new College of Fisheries has been established at Kishanganj in year 2018.

To further expand and strengthen the research and outreach capacity, following farms have been transferred to the University viz. Exotic Cattle Breeding Farm, Patna, Central Poultry Farm, Patna, Government Cattle Farm, Gaya and Government Buffalo Farm, Sipaya (Gopalganj). The basic objective of the University is to impart education in Veterinary Science, Animal Husbandry, Poultry, Fisheries, Dairy and other allied branches and to promote the advancement of learning, conduct of research and extension education.

The University is also striving to establish partnership with the industries and other entities working in the field of animal sciences, dairy sciences and fisheries sciences. In short span of three years the University has developed linkages with many universities, ICAR institutes and NGOs for mutual collaboration in research, teaching, training and extension. Along with reforms in UG education attempts are being made to strengthen the PG programmes and introduce Ph.D. in more disciplines. Twelve new Assistant professors and 02 Professors have joined Bihar Veterinary college this year. Recruitment for teaching and non-teaching positions is being expedited.

To provide the safe and secure internet connectivity over the entire university campus, an efficient local area network (LAN) with a high-speed internet connectivity of 150 mbps has been installed. To make the university future ready, a special cell has been established that will deliver the online courses not only for the University students but also deliver useful courses to the animal farmer. Academic Management software “Chanakya” has been implemented to keep all the records & manage all the academic activities. University is looking forward to introduce e-governance to ensure the transparency and efficiency in the university administration.

Human Resource development activities have been promoted through National Agricultural Higher Education Projecting (NAHEP) of ICAR. Under this programme three faculty member were deputed for International Training to USA and New Zealand and six teachers were deputed to National institutes/SAU’s of repute for advanced training. More than fifty on campus workshops and Seminars were conducted for training of faculty and post graduate students in their area of specialization.

An MoU between Bihar Animal Sciences University and Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, Patna has been established for the mutual benefits. Undergraduate students are regularly getting benefits by attending their courses related to Wild/Zoo animals at Patna Zoo. Twelve faculty members of BVC, Patna were deputed for 21 days Advanced training in wildlife management and health. A Brian-storming session on “Feeding a Nutrition Management of Zoo/Wild animals was organized on 17th May 2019 in which modification in existing feeding protocol of Patna Zoo animals were discussed in details and desirable modifications have been suggested.

The steps and actions of the university taken to improve teaching quality can be adjudged by the improved students performance in ICAR PG entrance examination, SRF and NET examination. The upgradation to library services resulted in improved academic environment and performance. To make students ready to new nomal, central computer lab and language lab have been established.

The laboratory facilities and other infrastructure is being added. Clinical facilities, Frozen semen lab, Embryo Transfer Technology lab, Molecular Biology Lab and Central Instrumentation Facility have been established for the benefit of research and training of students. Veterinary Hospital Management Software have implemented at Veterinary Clinical Complex (VCC) through which different clinical and associated activities became easier in day to day efficient handling and management of clinical cases. A Virtual Dissection Table for different types of anatomy practical and surgical preparations has been procured for making easy understandable the subject to the students. A.I. Cow Model, an advanced cow model has been procured in the department of Veterinary Gynecology & Obstetrics which will be useful in successful training of students for Artificial Insemination (AI) techniques without hurting the live animals.

During last three years there was significant (49%) increase in number of Clinical Cases registered and treated at Veterinary Clinical Complex. Provision of handling emergency cases at Veterinary Clinical Complex round the clock along with facility of Indoor Wards for Cattle, Buffaloes, Dogs, Sheep/Goat and Equines has been created which is now fully functional for different types of Indoor patients. Large Animal Operation Theater has been renovated and equipped for different type of invasive procedures. The Teaching Veterinary Hospital of this university is registered under Biomedical waste disposal and PNDT act 1984. Diagnostic Laboratory Services have been strengthened and put under single roof. The Clinical Complex also organizes awareness campaigns, on animal health and vaccination. Free Anti-Rabies vaccination programme for pets and for veterinarians are organized from time to time. Apart from the organizing Dog-shows every year, first Cat-show-2020 was organized this year, in which 36 cats of different breeds participated. This has provided a good platform for the Cat lovers/breeders to solve their problems. This College is having Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (VERU), established in 2009 with the objective to train Students, Veterinarians and Livestock owners for handling and protecting Livestock under different calamities. Till now, 324 students and all the Veterinarians (1200) of State of Bihar have been trained for Management of Animals in Emergencies as part of a special drive sponsored by Bihar State Disaster Management Authority.

The Placement Cell of Bihar Animal Sciences University (BASU), Patna has upgraded and renovated under NAHEP-IG project. University organizes Campus Interview (Campus Placement) for final year students of M.V. Sc., B.V. Sc. & A.H. and B.Tech (Dairy Technology). Bihar State Milk Co-operative Federation Ltd. (COMFED), Patna conducted interview on 12 March 2019. Out of 42 students appeared, 17 students were selected as Veterinary Professionals. The Bihar State Milk Cooperative Federation Ltd. (COMFED) again conducted interview on 20 July 2019 at Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology (SGIDT), Patna for B. Tech (DT) and M. Tech (DT) programmes in which 13 students appeared for the post Technical Officers.

ICAR approved the transfer of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jamui to Bihar Animal Sciences University which was earlier under the administrative control of ‘Shram Bharti’ an NGO. KVK Jamui under Extension Education Directorate is devoted to the upliftment of farmers and especially the migrant workers by providing them training in entrepreneurship and supplying various inputs for improved farming and animal husbandry. Poultry chicks of Vanraja and Gram Priya strains are distributed to farmers to encourage backyard poultry under the ICAR sponsored Poultry Seed Project. Health camps, Vaccination programmes, etc. are organized on regular basis for the animals of farmers and cattleman in nearby villages of University Headquarters and KVK, Jamui. University is also active in showcasing its work, achievements and events through various social networking platforms, i.e. Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter.

During the lock-down period of Corona pandemic, the university swiftly switched over to online mode of teaching. Large number of lectures were delivered in online mode and discussion sessions with students were arranged. Study material in the form of presentation through slides, lecture notes, online resources, video recordings of lectures and e-courses was provided to the students. During this Corona pandemic, Internship programme of BVSc & AH students has been completed well in time and all the students were evaluated through online mode and they have been awarded their degrees. The response and cooperation from the students have been very encouraging and the university is going ahead with online examinations. The University also organized a series of webinars, workshops, virtual trainings and special lectures by inviting experts from India and abroad as resource persons.

Two new buildings viz. The Library Bhawan and Academic Block have been recently completed and transferred to the University. These are housing the Library, Examination halls, Lecture theaters, Office of the Finance Comptroller and Departments of Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology. The laboratories are being furnished and other infrastructure is also being created at College of Fisheries, Kisanganj on priority.

The University looks forward to ICAR accreditation and become a well-known premier institution of repute in its domain of specialization. As expected it will serve as a vehicle of change to usher science led development in livestock and allied sectors in Bihar.
