Anand
Agricultural University, Anand was established on 1-5-2004 vide
Government of Gujarat Act No Guj 5 of 2004 dated 29-4-2004. it
was carved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University
(GAU). AAU was set up primarily to provide support to the
fanning community of that area/region in education, research and
extension activities is Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry,
Bio-technology, Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Dairy
Science, Agricultural Engineering, Product Processing and Home
Science. There are at present 3 colleges, 17 research and 6
extension education institutes working in six districts of
Gujarat viz. Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahel and
Vadodara which fall in the university's jurisdiction.
AAU's operating philosophy continues to create a partnership
between the rural population and committed academia to provide a
basis for sustained rural development. Its mission is to promote
a continuous process of development of sustainable growth and
economic independence in rural society. AAU imparts education in
agriculture through residential semester system and provides
degrees in Agriculture, Dairy Science and Veterinary Science and
Animal Husbandry to deserving students.
Research is carried out at 16 research stations in addition to
the main campus. Major crops like paddy, wheat, maize, cotton,
sugarcane, castor, tobacco and vegetables are the subjects of
research. In addition the research areas includes livestock
management, animal breeding, reproductive biology, nutrition and
poultry. Milk and milk products are emphasized in dairy
technology.
Extension education faculty extends advisory services to farmers
including farm visit, diagnoses and recommendations to overcome
pests and disease problems, analyses of soil samples,
nutritional and management problems related to animals and other
agriculture related issues. In addition to this diploma
courses/training programmes in agriculture, home science,
bakery, poultry, horticulture etc are conducted for the benefit
of farmers.
The Krishi Vigyan Kendras and Sirdar Smriti Kendras
undertake vocational training of farmers, farm women and rural
youths besides imparting training to field level extension
workers for the upliftment of farmers. Tribal Training
Centres impart training to tribal communities in the field
of agriculture and allied sectors.
Dr. M. C. Varshneya,a renowned Agricultural Meteorologists the
first Vice-Chancellor of the university.
