After creation of new state of Uttaranchal, GBPUA&T, Pantnagar become the part of Uttaranchal. Whereas the western part of the state of Uttar Pradesh which was the earlier part of GBPUA&T, Pantnagar was segregated. The western part of the state which is equivalent to Punjab & Haryana state in agriculture production lags behind in economic development. In order to initiate rapid development of the western part, UP Govt. has established a new Agriculture University namely Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel University of Agriculture & Technology, Meerut vide GO No. 320 A/ G11 - 10-8-2000/ 400 (96) 2000 date 27th Sept., 2000 of UP Agric. University Act. (Amended) 1958, the University is situated at Delhi - Deharadun high way about 73 Km away from Delhi and 10 Km away from Meerut. Pabli Khas is the nearest railway station from the University. Geographically, the University is located at 290 01’ Latitude & 770 45’ E Longitude. Climate of the area is sub tropical. The average maximum temperature of the area is 420 C during the summer while the average minimum temperature is 80 C during the winter. The average rainfall of the area is 800 mm. Area jurisdiction of the University This University is responsible for the agricultural development of 4 commissionaries viz. Saharanpur, Meerut, Moradabad & Bareilly consisting of 15 districts of western U.P namely Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Bagpat, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, Moradabad, Rampur, Bijnor, J.P. Nagar, Bareilly, Budaun, Pilibhit and Shajahanpur. Main goal of this University is to bring the prosperity in remote villages through diversification, intensification and Technology transfer. This University is meant for farmers where farmers can solve their field problems & give their valuable suggestions. This University envisages emphasis on Biotechnology, adoption of villages for a ‘Adarsh Village’, use of biofertilizer, use of bioagent for insect pest control, production of bioagents, quality testing of byproducts, fertilizer, soil, water, insecticides/ pesticides and residual test etc. Objective of the University (a) Teaching : To create human resources which can apply their acquired knowledge and skills to diversify and industrialize agriculture for socio - economic transformation of the rural society. (b) Research : To generate wealth and employment in agriculture sector and making Indian Agriculture globally competitive. To achieve economic and environmental sustainability through integrated management of productivity, production, marketing and end use of farm produce. To develop separate strategies for optimum, small and marginal farm holdings. (c) Extension : To establish partnership with farmers and other stake holders in agriculture. To facilitate validation, demonstration and adoption of appropriate technologies. To disseminate the technology among the farmers. Zonal Research Stations/ Krishi Vigyan Kendra & Krishi Gyan Kendra
Teaching The University has started its teaching programme for B.Sc. (Ag.) & AH Degree through entrance examination w.e.f 2001. From July 2003, PG programmes in 12 subjects will be started. Research The University has planned to develop CRC, HRC, VRC, LRC and FRTC. Mushroom production unit to develop varieties and consumerate technologies. The University will establish an advanced centre for biotechnology to harness bio-resources of western UP, for the benefit of the farmer. Extension The University plans to reduce the time lag from research in lab to adoption in the field. Hence, it plans to redefine its relationship with farmers from that of a client to partner. All the techniques in extension will shift into participating mode. Technology refinement will be done in farmer’s field with his assistance. |
